'Need to try to convince us' – Mauricio Pochettino on his approach to shaping World Cup squad, USMNT player expectations as in-form Christan Pulisic leads October roster

Pochettino's message to this squad was clear – every player must look in the mirror and ask 'What is expected of me?'

A new term was coined towards the end of Mauricio Pochettino's news conference on Thursday – "Pochismo." It was used to express how the U.S. men's national team coach has his own way of making decisions and, for the purposes of meeting with the media, his own way of explaining them.

"It's a good thing that Pochismo is positive," Pochettino said with a laugh. "It's good that it's used in a positive way."

In the year since taking over as USMNT boss, Pochettino has had his own way of explaining his decisions. There have been times where he's been willing to go in depth. At other times, he's asked for trust. Those decisions, ultimately, rest with Pochettino and his staff, and them alone. Part of Pochismo, then, is understanding that fact and accepting the answer, even if disagreeing.

Pochettino's most recent decisions were announced on Thursday. He had selected a 26-man squad for the upcoming friendlies against Ecuador and Australia. There were a number of talented players named to the squad. There were a few that weren't. Those decisions, Pochettino reminded reporters, were his, and the asked-for explanations, in truth, didn't matter. What matters now is getting the 26-player group together and going from there.

In general, Pochettino's message was clear. He wants every player in the pool to look in the mirror and ask themselves two questions: what is expected of me and what am I going to do to meet those expectations?

"It's difficult to explain, because I think we'd need to spend over an hour doing it," Pochettino said, "but I think in the way that they grow, in the way that I see things, how I feel soccer, for me, it's completely different. I think that is why players need to perform, need to think and need to try to convince us. The players need to think a little bit about what we expect from them.

"That is a different question: what we expect… If players not in the squad call us and say, 'What do you expect from us coach?' that is a different question. I can speak for over an hour, two hours, and we can have videos and everything. But that's different from 'Why am I not here?' That is a different question."

GOAL looks at key takeaways from Pochettino's roster release.

Getty ImagesAdams' absence explained

Many of the absences could be explained. Injuries and form, by and large, cover most of it. Not Tyler Adams, though. He's been in great form with Bournemouth, has been vital for the USMNT and might very well be the captain next summer.

His excusal, though, makes sense.

"He's expecting his wife to have a baby in the next few days," Pochettino said. "That is why he's not here because of that reason. It's a positive reason! It's a good reason, and we hope it's going well. That's why he's not in this in this camp."

All good things then and, in truth, the USMNT will be just fine this time without him. If anything, it's a chance for Pochettino to get a look at other deeper-lying midfielders that could serve as Adams' backup or, perhaps, partner.

AdvertisementGetty Images SportThose not in the squad

Pochettino was asked to explain several notable omissions. He was happy to discuss Adams. The others? Less so. Those players aren't on the squad for soccer reasons. He knows why they weren't called in and, in his opinion, they do too -and he says that's all that matters.

"They are called in because they perform," Pochettino said, "but after, they need to come here to perform, to follow the rules, and to behave in the way that we want that they behave, with all the respect, and try to not only win games, to think and to build something important… It's unbelievable to see how the players behave differently when they know that they are going to play versus when they are not going to play.

"That is the most difficult thing you need to understand: when you maybe want to play, but it's not right. You have to behave in a different way, process that inside yourself and deal with that pain inside. You then need to provide your best and support your teammates, the staff and the national team."

Pochettino was clear that he wasn't shutting the door on anyone. No one's spot is guaranteed – and none are lost, either.

"There aren't too many players in the world [that are guaranteed]," he said. "You can ask me why Messi is not in the roster. This type of player: Maradona, Pele, I don't know, different names. I think we need to respect the players that are here. We never give an explanation [on the omissions] because we respect the players that are here. I talk to the players that are in this roster. But knowing the players that are not with us, what I want to tell you is we are very focused and working so hard to try to build the best roster.

"These names, of course, it's an open system that maybe today they are not here, but maybe they are here in the next month. We always try to bring a combination and create a roster with good balance or with players that I think deserve to be here."

Getty Images SportRobinson's status

There were plenty of new "old" faces named to the team. In total, 15 of the 26 players Pochettino called in were not a part of the September camp. Few, though, are as interesting as Robinson, who rejoins the USMNT for the first time in 2025.

The 2024 U.S. Soccer Player of the Year, Robinson has recently returned for Fulham, playing his first 90-minute game of the season last week against Cambridge. Fulham have, generally, been patient with Robinson, who dealt with injury issued down the stretch last season. Pochettino will be too, even as he turns to him for a vital camp appearance.

"It's a long time that we haven't seen him for different reasons," Pochettino said. "Today, we know that he's an important player for us and it's a moment to bring him in. Of course, we have been talking with his club. We are going to try to manage him in the best way here, but it's important that he can be with us, with the group, and with his teammates. I think you always have to manage this situation.. We are thinking about that in all aspects."

Robinson, of course, has backup. Max Arfsten, who has deputized for him for much of the year, is also in camp and could play minutes on that left-hand side. It remains to be seen how much we'll see of Robinson then, but Pochettino is glad to have him back.

"Antonee is not playing too much, but I think the challenge is to help him to evolve and to start to feel the confidence again and to come back and to play in a regular way with his team," he said. "This is going to be great for us."

GettyPulisic's form

The world doesn't need Pochettino to say it, but he will anyway. If you weren't aware, Christian Pulisic is in ridiculous form.

With four goals and two asissts in five Serie A matches to go with two additional goals in the Coppa Italia, Pulisic is Italy's most in-form player. There's an argument to be made that he's performing as well as any player in the world right now. That, of course, brings a smile to Pochettino's face. He has one hell of a weapon as his disposal.

"Christian is a great player," Pochettino said. "He's a player that has continuity and I think we can say he is the most important player now for the national team that is performing and playing under big pressure. He needs to perform every single week and every single game in a place like Milan and he's doing well.

"We are so happy when he's scoring goals, giving assists and performing. That is what we want, and now is to help him arrive at the World Cup in the best place."

Pulisic, having put the Gold Cup controversy to rest, was fantastic against Japan last month, running the show in that game. Now, he'll be expected to do the same in these two matches as he looks to continue to bridge that good form across the Atlantic.

Forget Raskin: "Glorious" star will be the best Rangers player this season

Glasgow Rangers central midfielder Nicolas Raskin dominated the headlines for the right reason last weekend when he scored in the League Cup win at Ibrox.

The Belgium international had been left out of the last two matchday squads in the Scottish Premiership, but returned to score the opening goal in front of the home supporters on Saturday.

Raskin met James Tavernier’s corner brilliantly to head the ball into the back of the net for the first of what will, hopefully, be many goals this season.

Why Nicolas Raskin is a key player for Rangers

Russell Martin needed to get the central midfielder back into the squad as quickly as possible after the manager claimed that a breakdown in trust led to the player being left out of the clashes with Celtic and Hearts.

The Belgian star is a terrific operator in the middle of the park because he can deliver quality at both ends of the pitch, having scored five goals and provided 11 assists in all competitions last season, per Sofascore.

As you can see in the table above, Raskin was particularly impressive when it came to the defensive side of the game in the 2024/25 campaign, with his ability to disrupt attacks and win possession back for his side.

Despite the Belgium international’s quality in the middle of the park, it is Djeidi Gassama who has the potential to be the club’s best player this season.

Why Gassama could be the best player for Rangers this season

The Light Blues signed the electric winger from Sheffield Wednesday for a fee of £2.2m in the summer transfer window, and he has already shown plenty of promise on the pitch.

Chalkboard

Football FanCast’s Chalkboard series presents a tactical discussion from around the global game.

Gassama has delivered four goals and one assist in 12 appearances in all competitions for the Scottish giants, per Transfermarkt, showing that he can provide a big threat in the final third.

The clip above shows that Rangers signed a player who they knew was capable of “glorious” goals from the left flank, cutting in to create something out of nothing.

Gassama has already shown that he can score glorious goals for Rangers, as his first strike for the club against Panathinaikos was very similar to that goal for the Owls.

The 22-year-old magician has the quality to simply create something out of nothing when the Light Blues need a moment of magic, which is an incredibly valuable trait to have.

Gassama has yet to score in five matches in the Scottish Premiership, unfortunately, but he has been in a side that has struggled to progress the ball. As much as he can provide quality out of very little, the winger still needs to get the ball to his feet out wide to isolate his man.

If Martin can get the system and the starting XI right, the former Sheffield Wednesday winger could deliver consistent quality out wide with his impressive dribbling ability and ball striking.

That could make him a real difference-maker, as he was in the Champions League qualifiers with four goals in six games, for the Gers moving forward this season.

Rangers must rue losing their own homegrown Bukayo Saka for £0

Rangers lost a talented young player this summer and he is already being compared to Bukayo Saka.

ByDan Emery Sep 23, 2025

Therefore, Gassama could be the club’s best player because of his ability to win games on his own with his goalscoring and creating potential, but it is down to the manager to put him in a position to exceed and shine brighter than the likes of Raskin and Bojan Miovski.

'It's about getting opportunities' – Celtic's Austin Trusty ready to show Mauricio Pochettino why he deserves USMNT minutes

U.S. international Auston Trusty says he’s in some of the best form of his career, even after missing out on several national team call-ups. Determined to prove he deserves a spot among the U.S. centerbacks, Trusty – appearing on GOAL's The Rondo – noted positive differences between USMNT manager Mauricio Pochettino and former boss Gregg Berhalter.

Getty'I will do anything possible'

Despite starring for Scottish powerhouse Celtic, Trusty has been called up just once by Pochettino – in November 2024 – and played only one match under the Argentine manager. However, Trusty praised Pochettino, and stressed he hopes he gets the opportunity to showcase his talent with the coach.

"I will do anything possible to be on that team and be a player of that magnitude and be the guy for the U.S.," Trusty told GOAL. "I know I can do it. I've shown it. And it's just about getting opportunities. When I get the opportunity, thrive in it. When I get the opportunity, it's game over."

Trusy said he had a plantar fascia injury recently, which has limited him so far this season, making just two appearances in August.

"It kind of ruined some momentum," he said, "but it's about getting back into the momentum and showing them I'm here as well."

Trusty pointed to his stats, particularly his passing last season, as he connected on 93.5 percent.

"I'm performing at an extremely high level," he said. "Look at all my stats, look at all of the people I'm defending in the Champions League and now, the Europa League. When you get the opportunity to get called up, it's about performing… Anyone competing for such a historic tournament, playing in the World Cup in the U.S., that's a prized possession of any American. So we're all coming with that mindset."

AdvertisementGetty Images SportComparing Berhalter to Pochettino

Trusty played more under former U.S. manager Berhalter, but the defender said he was disappointed that the current Fire manager left him off the squad for big tournaments – including the 2024 Copa America.

"Gregg called me up, but he didn't call me up during the times I wanted to be, like with the Copa America and the World Cup," he said. "Which was very, very upsetting. Me and him have had conversations, but I won't talk about that."

The 27-year-old said things are different with Pochettino, who's had managed the likes of Lionel Messi and Kylian Mbappe during his career.

"It's good, having a fresh face coming in. Having a guy of his caliber, he's coached Messi, Neymar and Mbappe, all of those guys, so he has the backing of every single player," he said. "To have a coach of that caliber, you can't say nothing to him. He knows. He's been there and done that and you have to respect that. That's the biggest thing.

"He has an aura, and we all look up to him. That's what you want from a national team coach."

'He's letting people have a shot'

Trusty said Pochettino has provided opportunities to players who didn't get those chances in the previous regime. Diego Luna, for example, has 13 of his 14 caps under Pochettino, scoring three goals in that span.

"Maurico, he's letting people have a shot," Trusty said. "He's letting people come in, and that's what you want. If you're a player on the outside and weren't one of the ones getting called in every single camp, no matter what, that's what you want. Mauricio is doing that."

Ethan Bamber claims five-for as Warwickshire, Yorkshire trade blows

It was a 16-wicket opening day at Headingley

ECB Reporters Network supported by Rothesay02-May-2025Ethan Bamber ran through Yorkshire with a five-for•Getty ImagesWarwickshire 161 for 6 (Barnard 41, Coad 2-30, Sears 2-38) trail Yorkshire 205 (Bairstow 47, Bamber 5-47) by 44 runsNew-ball seamer Ethan Bamber claimed his first five-wicket haul in a Warwickshire shirt as they and star-studded Yorkshire traded blows during a 16-wicket opening day of their Rothesay County Championship fixture at Headingley.Bamber moved from Middlesex over the winter and is playing his fourth match for the Bears, who won the toss on a green pitch and bowled their hosts out for 205 to signal an early tea.His 5 for 47 from 15.2 overs included England’s new limited-overs captain Harry Brook for a frantic 33, while impressive three-wicket all-rounder Ed Barnard got Joe Root for 1 and Jonny Bairstow for 47.Warwickshire, for whom wicketkeeper Kai Smith claimed five catches, closed on 161 for 6 from 43 overs in reply, trailing by 44. Barnard added 41.Both counties came into this following draws last time out.Warwickshire were six points better off in the early Division One table after three matches, and they edged the morning as Yorkshire reached lunch at 97 for 4. Brook had 33 of those. With obvious movement through the air and off the pitch on offer, Bamber struck twice added to a wicket apiece for fellow seamers Barnard and Olly Hannon-Dalby.Having left Fin Bean out, Yorkshire opted to utilise Dom Bess as a locum opener alongside Adam Lyth, who contributed 26 but was one of the morning wickets. Dawid Malan (groin) was also missing.Bess, for 16, was first to go when he got an inside-edge to a Bamber delivery which nipped back and was caught behind by Smith.Warwickshire’s wicketkeeper took three morning catches, including James Wharton off Bamber at the second attempt. He fumbled the initial chance but held the rebound between his thighs. When Root played at a back-of-a-length delivery from Barnard which he probably didn’t need to, edging low to second slip, Yorkshire were 32 for 3 after 14 overs.Lyth followed to Hannon-Dalby before Brook made an action-packed start to his innings. Although he drove nicely, he danced down the pitch twice looking to hit over the top and survived a huge caught behind appeal off Michael Booth.Brook failed to add to his lunchtime 33 when miscueing an attempted uppercut off Bamber to Hamza Shaikh at third – 97 for 5 in the 29th over, three balls into the afternoon.George Hill followed shortly afterwards to the same bowler before Bairstow and Jordan Thompson united to share a vital seventh-wicket 61. While both were attacking, it wasn’t reckless. Thompson supported his captain with 35.There were signs of Bairstow – making his 100th Championship appearance – at his savage best. But there was finesse too. One straight drive off Barnard was as good as any shot all day. However, Barnard removed both as Yorkshire fell to 185 for 9. Thompson was caught behind before Bairstow played on.New Zealander Ben Sears then clobbered a late 28 to sneak Yorkshire beyond the 200-mark before edging Bamber into the slips to signal an early tea.And wickets continued to fall in the evening – six of them. After Davies and Rob Yates shared an opening 30, Warwickshire lost four for 17 inside eight overs.Davies edged Australian debutant Jordan Buckingham’s new-ball seam to third slip before Yates was trapped lbw by Ben Coad. And when Shaikh gloved pacy Sears behind as he tried to leave alone, followed by Zen Malik trapped lbw by Hill next ball, the hosts were back in it at 47 for 4 in the 14th.Barnard then set about settling the situation and drove nicely. He shared 59 with Dan Mousley – the latter contributing 32 before edging Coad to second slip – and a sixth-wicket 50 with Australian debutant Beau Webster, 32 not out. However, Barnard was caught at second slip off Sears late on, almost the last act of a super day’s play.

Why Erling Haaland is ‘very similar’ to Cristiano Ronaldo as Man City superstar reaches 324 career goals three years quicker than Portuguese GOAT

Ruben Dias has explained why Erling Haaland is “very similar” to Cristiano Ronaldo, with the Manchester City and Portugal defender having played with both. At club level, Dias has seen Haaland hit another purple patch that has helped him to reach 324 career goals three years quicker than five-time Ballon d’Or winner CR7 managed – with the prolific Norwegian seemingly taking his game to even greater heights.

Haaland goals in 2025-26: How many has he scored?

A red-hot start to the 2025-26 campaign has been enjoyed by Haaland, with the target being found on 23 occasions through 13 appearances for club and country. He came agonisingly close to claiming a ninth Premier League hat-trick last time out when bagging a brace for City in their 2-0 victory over Everton – with several big opportunities being spurned.

Just three months after turning 25, Haaland has reached 324 goals. He has hit that point considerably quicker than Ronaldo, who remains in the process of chasing down 1,000 – with the Portuguese GOAT, who now plies his trade for Al-Nassr in the Saudi Pro League, sitting on 949 and counting.

AdvertisementGettyQualities shared by Haaland and Ronaldo

Dias will be hoping to help Ronaldo challenge for World Cup glory next summer, having starred alongside Haaland in City’s quest for more domestic and continental honours. He is understandably delighted to be a team-mate of two iconic goalscorers that boast similar traits.

Dias told reporters when asked about how Haaland and Ronaldo compare: “It's a good reflection of his state of mind. In that he is very similar to Ronaldo. Everyone wants to score goals, but both of them have this ability to just keep on scoring and scoring. We're just happy that Erling is in this moment and we want him to continue. We want to keep pushing him because we want him to break records that have not been beaten before.

“You need to ask Erling and Cristiano (about what makes them so special), but obviously mentality is key in everything that everyone does. That will be a big part of it. But also natural talent and a lot of other things.”

Best version of Haaland? Dias answers tough question

Haaland hit 52 goals for City in his debut campaign at the Etihad Stadium, helping them to a Premier League, Champions League and FA Cup treble. His 36 efforts in the English top-flight that season was a new record.

Quizzed on whether Haaland is even better now, Dias added: “I don't really know because Erling has beaten the Premier League goals record before, so better than ever? He's always been brilliant and on a very special level. Last season was obviously tricky for us, but it was probably the moment after winning so much.

“I actually don't know what his numbers are, but we will keep pushing him. We will push everyone on the pitch because only that way will we achieve great things. If anyone thinks we have won enough here then they're in the wrong place. If players keep pushing themselves for better individual form then a better collective form comes out. That's the only way.”

GettyPremier League record? Future targets for Haaland

Haaland is working on a contract at City through to 2034. Alan Shearer has told of his all-time Premier League goal record of 260 potentially being eclipsed by a man that currently has 96 to his name: “Yes, Haaland is the perfect centre-forward. His record is phenomenal, appetite to score is fantastic. I love it. He’s quick, strong, agile, he reacts quicker than most around the six-yard box which is impressive and his ability to put the ball in the back of the net is magnificent. If you’re building a footballer or centre-forward, you wouldn’t look too far away from Haaland being the perfect one.

“Haaland could definitely break my Premier League goal record. There’s no doubt that if he does another seven or eight years, maybe even less then he’ll have a brilliant chance of breaking it. But there’s so many ifs and different things that could happen to that. There are so many ifs and buts, but absolutely, if Haaland was to stay in the Premier League another six or seven years then he’s definitely someone who could, and probably will break my record.”

It remains to be seen how long Haaland will remain in Manchester. He continues to attract interest from the likes of Real Madrid and Barcelona, as they remain in the market for the best players on the planet, and is already considered to be one of, if not the best goalscorer that the Premier League has ever seen – topping the likes of Shearer and Harry Kane.

Georgia Adams trumps Grace Scrivens in battle of century-scoring skippers

Linsey Smith takes 4 for 33 to give Hampshire their fourth victory in six matches

Bouchier had her off stump flattened before Charli Knott tickled behind to Amara Carr to leave Hampshire 32 for 2.But McCaughan continued her magnificent form, which started with Manly in Australian Grade Cricket over the winter and carried on in the One-Day Cup with scores including 64, 133 not out and 57.She rebuilt with an initially scratching Adams – who was dropped on 28 at midwicket – before missing a sweep to get pinned lbw by Abtaha Maqsood, six runs shy of a fourth 50-plus score. That stand of 72 was merely the amuse bouche for the innings-defining 144 that Adams added with Southby.Everything the pair did was done with the lowest of risk as they barely let the run-rate dip below five an over with crafty batting.Adams became the final member of Hampshire’s top five to record a fifty this season, doing so in 77 balls, before Southby followed to the milestone – for the second time this year – in 68 balls.Southby was bowled with seven overs to go, with the latter stage of the innings coming with the sub-plot of ‘can Adams get to three figures?’ She was on 82 when Southby departed.Abi Norgrove gamefully rotated the strike until she was run out, with Adams still eight runs away, but a pair of offside boundaries drew the bat raise out of Adams. The innings, which had showcased all her trademark effortless swinging and placement, came in 125 deliveries and was her fourth in List A cricket. She ended up unbeaten on 110, and Hampshire just above par on 273, with Nancy Harman replicating Norgrove’s earlier endeavour.Scrivens was supreme from the off, showing complete control over where her shots were going. The innings wasn’t built around big shots, but constant accumulation. Her top-order all rolled with her. Lissy MacLeod was brisk in her 25 – adding 47 for the opening stand – before Jo Gardner came in.Gardner wasn’t in the starting XI, but fielded the majority of the innings after Flo Miller injured herself trying to stop a boundary in the second over, before formally entering the match after Cordelia Griffith suffered a concussion while fielding. She took her chance by keeping the scoreboard ticking in a 71-run alliance with Scrivens, but departed for 23 when she slapped to mid off.Jodi Grewcock followed on, scoring at over a run-a-ball but only scoring three boundaries, in her 33, with 70 runs added with the accelerating Scrivens. She chipped to cover with 86 still required, with Essex stumbling as the required rate climbed, and Smith gained complete control of the game and put herself at the top of the wicket-takers in the One-Day Cup.Eva Gray, Scrivens, Coppack and Esmae MacGregor were caught, and Amara Carr stumped, all trying to keep the visitors in touch, but they fell 17 runs short.

Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca has heaped praise on an “important” member of the squad following his return from injury.

Chelsea face Premier League title rivals Liverpool amid selection crisis

Maresca, after winning the Conference League, Club World Cup and qualifying for the Champions League last season, has been tasked with building upon 2024/2025’s feats with over £280 million spent on new recruits in the summer window.

However, he is also forced to lean on a roster full of youth and a starting eleven boasting an average age of just 24.1 (BBC), with injuries crippling the tactician so far.

As October arrives, Chelsea’s absentee list includes Liam Delap, Levi Colwill, Wesley Fofana, Tosin Adarabioyo, Dario Essugo, Andrey Santos, Trevoh Chalobah and star forward Cole Palmer — who are all set to miss today’s clash with Arne Slot’s side at Stamford Bridge.

Fofana and Tosin are not expected to return until after the international break, with the former undergoing concussion protocol, while Chalobah is serving a one-match suspension after his red card against Brighton last weekend.

Colwill is set to miss the majority of this season after rupturing his ACL in pre-season too — leaving Maresca absolutely bereft of centre-backs to choose from against Liverpool — with it being most likely that Benoit Badiashile and Jorrel Hato are given the starting nod.

Badiashile has only just returned from injury himself, starting his first game of the season in a 1-0 Champions League win over José Mourinho’s Benfica on Tuesday, and the Frenchman impressed.

Reports suggest that Chelsea insiders have pushed Badiashile’s case behind-the-scenes as a capable deputy to come in and play a significant role, despite being linked with a move away last summer.

The 24-year-old’s presence, amid Chelsea’s serious defensive shortage, now looks more imperative than ever, with Badiashile refusing a move away in the last window and declaring his love for the West Londoners.

The former Monaco star’s loyalty is being repaid by Maresca, who piled praise on Badiashile in his pre-Liverpool press conference.

Enzo Maresca praises Benoit Badiashile return as "good news" for Chelsea

Speaking to reporters, Chelsea’s boss confirmed that Badiashile is in fact an “important” player for them, and his return to the fold is “good news” ahead of their challenging face-off against England’s champions.

Unfortunately for Badiashile, his place in the starting eleven is under threat long-term.

According to reports, Chelsea and Maresca are in agreement that the signing of a star centre-back takes “priority” for January.

Meanwhile, it is also believed that Chelsea have reached out to Marc Guehi’s camp this week and could attempt to re-sign the Crystal Palace star for a cut-price fee in the winter.

'It wasn't the right time' – Steve Parish lifts lid on how Crystal Palace kept Marc Guehi out of Liverpool's clutches in summer transfer saga

Crystal Palace owner Steve Parish believes the club would have taken a "significant risk" by going through with Marc Guehi's proposed transfer to Liverpool. The England international was on the cusp of moving to the Reds on transfer deadline day, only for the Eagles to pull the plug at the last minute as they struggled to find a suitable replacement.

Palace manager Glasner has confirmed Guehi will not sign new deal

Palace look set to miss out on receiving a transfer fee for Guehi, unless a cut-price deal is agreed in January. The 25-year-old is out of contract next summer, meaning he can negotiate a free transfer to another club when the transfer window opens in two months’ time.

Eagles manager Oliver Glasner confirmed earlier this month that Guehi will not sign a new contract with the club, saying: "I think Marc has already told us that he doesn't sign a new contract, so he will leave next year. The club wanted [him to stay]. They offered Marc a new contract. But he said, 'no, I want to make something different'. And that's normal. And for us, it's how we can deal with this situation? [What] is the best way to get this next step done? And that's all about how we are talking together."

However, Palace chief Parish has since opened up about the club’s decision to block Guehi’s move to Liverpool, saying keeping hold of their captain was much more important than recouping a significant transfer fee in the summer.

In an interview with the Media Network, Parish said it was imperative Palace retained their identity by keeping hold of Guehi, having lost key stars such as Wilfried Zaha, Michael Olise and Eberechi Eze in recent seasons.

"We did quite an analytical look at Marc's worth and places in the league," Parish said. "What is the upside and what is the downside? It was a marginal call. Marc was great about it. They [Liverpool] made an offer and they are a massive club. He was interested in going but was fine about staying if that was the decision. It was a difficult one but definitely the right one.

"One thing Oliver said, which says a lot about staying humble, is the reality of this football club is what we need to deal with day to day. It is something I learnt very early on. You can take absolutely nothing for granted. We needed to keep Marc because the difference between having a stellar season and a relegation-threatening season is probably winning five games.

"The margins are so tight. Yes. Michael [Olise] is gone, Ebs [Eberechi Eze] is gone and Wilfried [Zaha] went too but there is a limit before you break the fabric of the team. We felt it was a significant risk. With all the calculations, we decided it wasn't the right time."

Parish has consistently stressed the importance of Palace keeping hold of their most prized assets, with midfielder Adam Wharton having also been linked with Real Madrid and Manchester United.

In an interview with earlier this month, Parish said of Palace’s stance on Wharton: "If Manchester United want Adam Wharton, there's nothing surprising really about that.

"The fact of the matter is he's got a long contract to run. There's no pressure on us to do it, and I don't think there's any real pressure from the player either."

Guehi and Wharton have been in fine form in 2025-26 as Palace look to add more silverware to their recent FA Cup and Community Shield successes. Glasner’s side set up a mouth-watering clash with Premier League leaders Arsenal in the quarter-finals of the Carabao Cup by beating Liverpool 3-0 on Wednesday evening.

The south Londoners are also viewed as one of the favourites to lift this season’s Conference League, winning their opening fixture against Dynamo Kyiv before suffering a surprise 1-0 loss at the hands of Cypriot outfit AEK Larnaca last Thursday.

Palace return to league action this weekend when they host in-form Brentford on Saturday, before entertaining Eredivisie side AZ Alkmaar in the Conference League next Thursday.

Eddie Howe praises "amazing transfer" by Newcastle for £17m less than value

Eddie Howe believes Dan Burn was probably worth £30m rather than the £13m Newcastle paid for him when they brought him home from Brighton.

Burn was one of Howe’s first signings in January 2022 as the club’s new owners flexed their financial muscle for the first time and he has since become a key member of the team which won the Carabao Cup last season and is playing Champions League football for the second time in three years.

Howe hails Burn and says Newcastle got him on the cheap

Asked if the versatile England defender has proved to be worth every penny of his £13million fee ahead of Saturday’s trip to his former club, head coach Howe said after a pause:

Burn reported back from England duty dreaming of a trip to next summer’s World Cup but facing a gruelling schedule for his club, who have seven games in the space of 23 days before the next international break, starting with the trip to Brighton.

Howe shares Newcastle injury updates on star players

Howe, who welcomed the appointment of Ross Wilson as the club’s new sporting director, could have Jacob Ramsey back following his recovery from an ankle injury, while fellow midfielder Joelinton is expected to be fit after returning from his exertions with Brazil nursing a minor groin problem.

However, full-backs Tino Livramento and Lewis Hall and striker Yoane Wissa, who continues to work his way back from posterior cruciate ligament damage, are still out.

Joe Willock will be in the squad after finding himself at the centre of a viral social media hoax in which it was claimed he had to be rescued after getting lost in York Maze for six hours.

Asked if he had spoken to the midfielder about the story, Howe said with a smile: “Yes, I did discuss it with him – just to check whether it was true or not, probably like everybody else. Thankfully it wasn’t.

“Joe’s fine, he’s good. He’s got the ability to laugh with it rather than be concerned by it.”
