Ipswich Town star now set to miss 4 games with injury in blow for McKenna

Ipswich Town have been hit with an injury setback regarding a player who has been described as a “phenomenon”, in a fresh blow for Kieran McKenna.

Latest Ipswich news

The Tractor Boys are back in Premier League action on Saturday afternoon, welcoming Tottenham to Portman Road, in another big game for both sides.

Ipswich go into the match sitting 18th in the table and only two points behind Wolves, so victory could feel like a significant moment in their season. They will need to play well to win, though, with Spurs buoyed by a 1-0 victory at home to Manchester United last Sunday.

In terms of transfer news ahead of the summer window, the Tractor Boys have been linked with a move for Millwall defender Japhet Tanganga. The 25-year-old has made 30 appearances in the Championship this season, averaging 5.7 clearances and 3.4 aerial duel wins per game in the competition.

With Ipswich battling for their Premier League survival, they will need as many players to stay fit as possible, but a concerning injury update has now emerged.

Ipswich suffer worrying injury blow

According to The Athletic, Ipswich attacker Julio Enciso is “facing up to four weeks on the sidelines” through injury, which is set to keep him out of the next four top-flight matches.

While a scan has revealed no serious damage to his knee, having been forced off in last weekend’s 1-1 draw away to Aston Villa, he is still set to be missing for a sustained period of time.

Julio Enciso

Being without Enciso this weekend is an undoubted negative for Ipswich, not to mention the fact that he looks likely to miss the upcoming league clashes with Tottenham, Man United, Crystal Palace and Nottingham Forest should he be out for four weeks.

Granted, the 21-year-old has struggled to feature much since sealing a loan move from Brighton last summer, but he is a dangerous player on his day, being hailed by football talent scout Jacek Kulig as a “phenomenon” in the past.

Not only that, but Ipswich teammate Jacob Greaves also spoke about how highly he rated the Paraguayan within days of working alongside him, saying: “I’ve only seen him for two days, but I’ve seen a little bit of him in training. I saw the goal he scored against Man City, which I think was nominated for the Puskas Award.”

Hopefully, Enciso is back on the pitch as soon as possible, playing a positive role in Ipswich preserving their Premier League status for another season.

Ipswich must now sell £35k-p/w flop who McKenna said had a 'high ceiling'

Kieran McKenna could be ruthless this coming summer in ditching this expensive Ipswich Town flop.

1 ByKelan Sarson Feb 20, 2025

He showed at Brighton what a handful he can be, scoring four league goals in 2022/23, and there could still be plenty more to come from him on loan at Portman Road once he returns.

Hardik Pandya, Shikhar Dhawan to lead India in New Zealand

India are touring New Zealand from November 18 for three T20Is and three ODIs

Hardik Pandya fills in as captain for Rohit Sharma for the T20I series in New Zealand•Associated Press

Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli and KL Rahul have been rested from India’s tour of New Zealand in November, with Hardik Pandya and Shikhar Dhawan named captains of the T20I and ODI squads respectively.Rishabh Pant has been named vice-captain for the entire tour that is set to begin with the T20Is on November 18, five days after the T20 World Cup final in Australia. Neither Jasprit Bumrah nor Ravindra Jadeja, both of whom missed the T20 World Cup because of injuries, were picked for the tour.Dhawan’s selection as ODI captain, chief selector Chetan Sharma said, was another indicator of his place in India’s 50-overs plans in the immediate future, especially with the next World Cup in India exactly a year away. Dhawan most recently led India’s second-string ODI squad in a home series against South Africa last month.ESPNcricinfo Ltd

Though Rohit, Kohli and Rahul are skipping the trip to New Zealand, as many as eight players from the T20 World Cup squad are going: Hardik, Pant, Deepak Hooda, Suryakumar Yadav, Yuzvendra Chahal, Harshal Patel, Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Arshdeep Singh have been selected for the T20Is in New Zealand.Among those who could consider themselves unlucky to miss out, especially with the senior players rested, is opener Prithvi Shaw. The Mumbai batter has played a key role in the team’s journey to the knockouts of the ongoing Syed Mushtaq Ali T20s, topping their run-charts with a tally of 285 in seven innings at a strike rate of 191.27.”We basically are looking at Prithvi, we’re constantly in touch with Prithvi, he has been doing well. There’s nothing wrong with him at all,” Sharma said. “The thing is – the players who are already playing and those who are performing, they have got their chances. He [Shaw] will definitely get his chance. The selectors are in constant touch with him, talking to him, he is doing well and he will get his chances very soon.”While R Ashwin is believed to have asked for a break, Sharma did not reveal whether the decision to leave out Dinesh Karthik, the eldest member of the T20 World Cup squad, was a sign that India is moving on from the 37-year old finisher.ESPNcricinfo Ltd

In the fast bowling department, Mohammed Siraj and Deepak Chahar come in for the T20Is and ODIs respectively. Mohammed Shami has been given a break to manage his workload, with India scheduled to tour Bangladesh in December for their next World Test Championship assignment.Shubman Gill is the only uncapped player in the 16-member T20I squad, while the ODI squad features three uncapped players – all fast bowlers – Arshdeep, Kuldeep Sen and Umran Malik. As an opener, Gill was the second-highest run-getter for IPL champions Gujarat Titans in the 2022 season, scoring 483 runs in 16 innings at a strike rate of 132.32. Sen and Umran also had breakout seasons for Rajasthan Royals and Sunrisers Hyderabad respectively.Sen and Umran are coming off stints for their respective state sides in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy. Sen managed two wickets in five T20s for Madhya Pradesh at an economy of 10.16, while Umran finished with better numbers: eight wickets in seven matches at an economy of 8.08 and a best of 4 for 27.The presence of both Yuzvendra Chahal and Kuldeep Yadav in the white-ball squads meant there was no place for a third wristspinner in Ravi Bishnoi. Washington Sundar, part of both squads, and Shahbaz Ahmed (ODIs) were picked as the allrounders.India play three T20Is and three ODIs in New Zealand from November 18, five days after the T20 World Cup final. The T20Is will be played in Wellington (November 18), Mount Maunganui (November 20) and Napier (November 22), while the ODIs are in Auckland (November 25), Hamilton (November 27) and Christchurch (November 30).India last toured New Zealand in 2020, when they won the T20I series 5-0, lost the ODIs 3-0, and suffered a 2-0 defeat in the Test series.

Smith hopes SA20 will help end South Africa's World Cup wait

League commissioner hopes the tournament will give more players exposure to the big stage and high-pressure games

Graeme Smith and Mark Boucher are hopeful that the SA20, South Africa’s new franchise T20 league, will help the national team finally win a World Cup.”I actually thought we had a strong team in this World Cup in Australia, I thought we had a good chance,” Smith, the SA20 commissioner, said at an event in Mumbai. “But obviously disappointed with the way we finished. I think what we want to create in this league is that there’s so much talent – hope we can develop that talent to play under pressure on a global stage.”I know I keep talking about the IPL but you look at the amount of strong cricketers that have come through in the IPL,” Smith said. “Looking at trying to find 15 players, hopefully there’s 25-35 players in the next couple of years at a level where it makes the selectors jobs very, very difficult. Those that are used to playing big games, exposed to big games. Unfortunately South Africa has to deal with these questions all the time until they actually win a tournament.”Related

South Africa have not won a men’s World Cup in 16 attempts – eight ODI World Cups and eight T20 World Cups. While they have come close in knockout games a number of times, they failed to make the semi-finals in five of the last six ICC white-ball events. In the 2022 T20 World Cup, South Africa lost their last group match to Netherlands and did not progress to the knockouts.Boucher, whose tenure as South Africa head coach ended after the T20 World Cup, said the IPL – where he will now be coaching Mumbai Indians – was one of the reasons for India’s success in world tournaments. India, however, have won just one World Cup – in 2011 – since the IPL began in 2008.”There’s reasons why you’ve got World Cups in your cabinets,” Boucher said, talking about India. “The reason is big stages, guys playing in finals and semi-finals. The more you play those games the better you get. This [SA20] is going to be on the big stage as well. You’re going to see youngsters. Guys are going to be put in situations they’re not used to and that’s going to be exciting to see who comes through. Then once that happens, our coaches and selectors can check and select the guys who are needed for the big moments and the big events.”South Africa’s direct qualification for the 2023 ODI World Cup, however, hangs in the balance. They are currently at No. 11 in the Super League with only five matches to go, and need to win at least three to try and finish among the top eight teams that get direct qualification for next year’s World Cup.South Africa have won only five of their 16 Super League matches so far, having forfeited three ODIs in Australia to have all their top players available for the start of the SA20 in January.Graeme Smith, pictured here with Mark Boucher, Yuvraj Singh and Anil Kumble at the SA20 event in Mumbai, stressed on the importance of the league for South African cricket as a whole•PTI

Smith said South Africa had brought this situation upon themselves by playing “bad” cricket, and that CSA had no choice but to prioritise the SA20 at that point. CSA’s chief executive Pholetsi Moseki had also said previously that the board had taken a risk of withdrawing from the series against Australia with an eye on “securing the long-term sustainability of the game” in South Africa.”I think South Africa’s World Cup qualification was bad because they played bad. I mean, they had a lot of time to control that,” Smith said. “I think that this three-ODI cancellation, I actually feel for Cricket South Africa in many ways, because I know the effort that went in to move those three ODIs to open up a window for the league. The league will have a window free of international cricket in South Africa, like the IPL, for a period every year.”Australia never travel on Boxing Day or New Year’s. England are never away from home in their summer. It’s incredible that South African cricket still has decided that they’ll earn zero revenues this year because they’re going to Australia for three Test matches. So, I know that they went out of their way with Cricket Australia to find a way to make those three ODIs work, but it just wasn’t practical, and eventually South African cricket had to make a choice … it was going to start its own league and it needed to give it a chance and make a proper statement that it was going to make a success of it.”South Africa have not played a festive series in Australia since 2008, for the reasons Smith mentioned. Former CSA CEO Gerald Majola negotiated in previous FTPs that South Africa would only tour Australia outside of the Christmas-New Year period to maximise revenue at home. This series was decided in the 2019-2023 FTP, which was drafted in the post-Majola era. Cricket South Africa host only one incoming tour this season, against West Indies, but will launch the SA20 this summer.

Man Utd have struck gold on Ten Hag signing who’s now worth more than Bruno

Erik ten Hag’s reign as Manchester United manager was an up-and-down few years. He won two trophies during his two-and-a-half-year stint at Old Trafford, taking home the Carabao Cup in his first season and the FA Cup in his second.

However, failures in the Europa League and disastrous finishes in the Champions League and Premier League ultimately led to his sacking in October 2024, before being replaced by Ruben Amorim.

Backing in the transfer market was not an issue for Ten Hag. He spent a fortune, with some signings turning out to be better than others.

Van Gaal flops, Ten Hag disasters: The 10 worst Man Utd players post-Fergie

Man United have had some dreadful players since Sir Alex Ferguson retired in 2013.

ByRoss Kilvington Jan 24, 2025 Ten Hag's best signings at Man Utd

United’s former boss spent a mammoth £161m according to Goal, and whilst not all have been a success, there were some excellent additions. Perhaps the most value-for-money signing he made was Noussair Mazraoui. He joined the club in the summer from Bayern Munich for £12.8m upfront and a further £4.2m in add-ons.

He’s played 39 times for the club this season, grabbing two assists, including a sublime piece of work to set up Rasmus Hojlund away to Bodo/Glimt in the Europa League. The Moroccan was described as an “unbelievable” player by football analyst Harrison, host of The Overlap: The Breakdown.

One of the more successful signings under Ten Hag was another of his former Ajax players: Lisandro Martinez. The 2022 World Cup winner cost £56.7m, and has since gone onto make 91 appearances in that famous red shirt.

Another shrewd piece of business completed under the former Red Devils boss was the signing of Christian Eriksen on a free transfer. The elegant midfielder has struggled with injuries at times, but is also close to 100 appearances for United, having played 94 times with seven goals and 17 assists.

christian-eriksen-manchester-united-brighton-fa-cup-ten-hag

As good as all these players have been so far, perhaps the best signing under Ten Hag was an investment for the future as well as the present.

The United player who was Ten Hag's best signing

With Raphael Varane leaving United in the summer upon the expiration of his contract, the Red Devils needed to recruit a new centre-back to replace him. They did that by signing young Frenchman Leny Yoro from Lille.

Leny Yoro for Man Utd.

The France Under-23 international made the move to Old Trafford for a fee of £52.18m up front, and a further £6.73m in add-ons. They beat La Liga giants Real Madrid and fellow Premier League outfit Liverpool for his signature.

After returning from an injury he suffered in pre-season, 19-year-old Yoro has featured 18 times across all competitions for United. Amoirm has managed his workload well, ensuring he is not overplayed and at risk of another injury or burnout.

The Frenchman, who hails from Saint-Maurice, has made a big impression in his short United career so far. Football statistician Statman Dave recently described him as a “top talent”, and with goal-saving tackles like the one below against Liverpool, it is not hard to see why.

When comparing Yoro’s Sofascore stats from his final season at Lille and his time at United so far, you can see he has performed better in some areas. For example, last term in France he made 1.1 tackles per 90, compared to 2.1 this season.

Given his great start to life at Old Trafford, it might not be a surprise to learn that Yoro’s value has crept up since, as per Football Transfers.

Having been rated at £23.5m when joining, he is now valued at £54.8m, and it seems like that will only increase.

On top of that, he is valued higher than several of his Red Devils teammates. That includes club captain Bruno Fernandes. United’s “Portuguese Magnifico” is believed to be worth £53.3m, and the fact that Yoro is valued higher shows his talent, if nothing else.

It has been a great start to life in red so far for Yoro, and the Frenchman will hope he can continue to build on these strong early performances. He is certainly well on his way to becoming Ten Hag’s best signing.
