Can Vipers break the Capitals hoodoo and secure maiden title?

Or will Capitals continue their stunning turnaround and lift the trophy?

Sam Billings and Lockie Ferguson pose with the trophy on the eve of the final, although Ferguson is unlikely to feature•ILT20

Big picture: Two familiar rivals chasing a maiden titleDesert Vipers dominated the ILT20 2025 league stage like no other. They won six of their first seven matches, became the first side to confirm a playoffs position, and ended the league phase as table-toppers. But… it’s not all been hunky dory.Vipers have played 12 matches so far this season, of which they have only lost four. Three of those defeats, however, have come against their opponents in the final, Dubai Capitals: twice in the league stage and then in Qualifier 1. Having brushed most teams aside with a minimum of fuss, Vipers have come undone each time they have faced Capitals this season. Can they turn that narrative around and pick up a win in the game that matters the most, or will Capitals make a clean sweep and secure their first ILT20 crown?Related

Lockie Ferguson in doubt for Champions Trophy and Pakistan tri-series

Both teams know what it’s like to make it to the final and not win. Vipers did that in 2023, when they lost to Gulf Giants, while Capitals lost to MI Emirates in a one-sided final in 2024.There is little doubt that the two best teams in the competition have made it to the final. Vipers were dominant throughout. Capitals started slowly, losing three of their first four matches, but a confident win over Vipers brought their campaign back on track. They have since been unstoppable, winning six of their last seven matches. How the batters from both sides go might well decide the outcome of the final. Of the top ten run-getters in the tournament so far, five are from either Vipers or Capitals. These two teams played out a high-scoring clash at this venue just three days ago, and runs could once again be the theme in the final. Both teams have a great record in Dubai this season – Vipers have won four of their six games here, and Capitals five out of six. And no matter which team wins the final, we are sure to get a new ILT20 winner.Form guideDubai Capitals WWWLW (last five completed matches, most recent first)
Desert Vipers WLLWLGulbadin Naib has been an all-round package all season•ILT20

In the spotlight: Gulbadin Naib and Alex HalesHe is picking up wickets, he is scoring runs, he is flexing his biceps – Gulbadin Naib has turned out to be Capitals’ trump card this season. He is the fifth-highest run-scorer so far this tournament, with 376 runs in 11 outings at a strike rate of 158.64. In addition, he has 11 wickets in as many games and kept teams quiet in the middle overs. But most importantly, Naib has been excellent against Vipers. In three games against them this season, he has scores of 78*, 55* and 62, and picked up three wickets. Naib turned out to be the difference between the two sides in the first Qualifier and will be one of the key elements in the final. After bagging the Player-of-the-Match award in Qualifier 2, Alex Hales reckoned he was most pleased with how still his head was while he was playing his shots. It’s something he has maintained all season. Hales is third on the run-charts as things stand with 400 runs in 12 outings at a strike rate of 138.40. He has a good record against Capitals this season and Vipers will once again heavily rely on him to get them off to a flying start.Lockie Ferguson is unlikely to feature in the final•ILT20

Team news: Warner and Ferguson under injury cloudVipers are likely to miss two of their key players for the final. Captain Lockie Ferguson has been ruled out with a hamstring injury, while Wanindu Hasaranga, their joint-leading wicket-taker, has gone back to Sri Lanka and won’t be available. Sam Curran, who led the side in Qualifier 2, is likely to captain in the final as well. Depending on whether Vipers bat or bowl first, David Payne is likely to be substituted for Sherfane Rutherford and vice-versa.Desert Vipers (possible): 1 Alex Hales, 2 Rahmanullah Gurbaz, 3 Max Holden, 4 Dan Lawrence, 5 Sam Curran (capt), 6 Azam Khan (wk), 7 David Payne/Sherfane Rutherford, 8 Khuzaima Bin Tanveer, 9 Nathan Sowter, 10 Mohammad Amir, 11 Ali Naseer.David Warner scored an unbeaten 93 in his one game for Capitals so far, but has since been out with a back injury. He didn’t look in great shape in a virtual press conference on the eve of the final, and is unlikely to make the cut against Vipers. Capitals had subbed Obed McCoy for Adam Rossington in Qualifier 1 and that could be the case in the final, too.Dubai Capitals (possible): 1 Adam Rossingston/Obed McCoy, 2 Shai Hope (wk), 3 Gulbadin Naib, 4 Sam Billings (capt), 5 Rovman Powell, 6 Dasun Shanaka, 7 Sikandar Raza, 8 Dushmantha Chameera, 9 Farhan Khan, 10 Haider Ali, 11 Qais Ahmad.Pitch and conditionsIt’s Dubai, so the weather will be extremely humid and energy sapping. The teams batting second have held the advantage so far at this venue this season, winning ten out of 14 games. That’s largely because of the dew which has made an appearance late in the day. The captain winning the toss is likely to bowl. The temperature is expected to hover around the late 20s to the early 30s on the Celcius scale.Stats and trivia Shai Hope needs just ten runs to become the tournament’s leading run-getter. He is currently on 484 runs, only behind Tom Banton. The average first-innings score in Dubai so far this season is 155. Naib is the only player to feature in the top ten of both the leading wicket-takers and run-getters lists.Quotes”When you’ve beaten them a couple of times, that’s the scary part. Sometimes that momentum can break. Hopefully, that doesn’t happen, and we can continue our form.”
“They [Dubai Capitals] have won three games in a row, and I think it is our turn now to beat them in the big stage. I always believe that in the final whoever handles the pressure well has more of a chance to win the game. In the final the margin of error is very less so you have to be on your toes every single time.”

Fulham strike agreement to sign "special" Premier League gem with Kevin

They left their business late, but Fulham are now set to sign a second attacking target late on, with an agreement reportedly reached to sign a Premier League gem.

Update on Kevin and Fulham

Marco Silva was finally handed some good news after an afternoon to forget at Stamford Bridge on Saturday when reports emerged that Fulham had reached an agreement with Shakhtar Donetsk to sign Kevin. And whilst the Cottagers are still working on an agreement on personal terms, there’s no doubt that they are closing in on a top target ahead of the deadline.

Now that Fulham’s business is underway, Kevin may not be the only one to arrive. Fresh reports have indicated that the Cottagers have also revived a move for Raheem Sterling.

One of the most successful wingers in Premier League history, Sterling has endured a frustrating couple of years which wasn’t helped by a difficult loan spell at Arsenal last season. Now frozen out at Chelsea, he desperately needs the move that Fulham are seemingly attempting.

Of course, he wouldn’t be the first winger to revive the late stages of his career at Craven Cottage, either. Willian enjoyed two successful spells under Marco Silva and represents a fine example that Sterling should look to follow.

Meanwhile, at the other end of the deal, Fulham would be getting an experienced winger who has won all there is to win in English football.

With a matter of hours left until the transfer window slams shut, the West London club have burst into life and may yet welcome Kevin, Sterling and one other Chelsea gem before the deadline.

Fulham strike Tyrique George agreement

As reported by The Athletic’s David Ornstein, Fulham have struck an agreement to sign Tyrique George from Chelsea in a late deadline day deal worth £22m, plus add-ons. The young forward looked destined for AS Roma before a move collapsed late on, allowing those at Craven Cottage to come swooping in.

The 19-year-old is destined for something “special” according to scout Jacek Kulig last season and it’s hard to argue with that verdict. The teenager scored three senior goals whilst assisting five more last season and will now be hoping that more game time at Chelsea’s West London rivals means more goal involvement.

The Cottagers have identified an “unbelievable” player as a leading target.

ByDominic Lund Aug 28, 2025

In two swift moves, Fulham look destined to welcome Kevin and George – two young attacking stars – whilst a deal for Sterling has reportedly been revived. All three would undoubtedly turn a disappointing window into one that is full of promise.

CHEGANDO A HORA…

Man Utd planning to hold talks with £100m+ star who's agreed personal terms

Manchester United are now planning to hold a meeting with an “exceptional” star, who has already agreed personal terms on a move to Old Trafford.

Man Utd already looking ahead to January window

The summer transfer window has to be regarded as mixed for Man United, given that they managed to bring in some proven Premier League forwards in the form of Bryan Mbeumo and Matheus Cunha, but also missed out on a midfielder.

It certainly wasn’t for a lack of trying, with the Red Devils even making contact to sign Atletico Madrid’s Conor Gallagher on deadline day, but having been unsuccessful in their pursuit, Ruben Amorim will have to make do with what he has until January.

That is despite the fact United have made a very poor start to the new campaign, with former Arsenal player Stewart Robson singling Amorim’s midfield out for criticism in particular, saying: “The 3-4-3 covers all areas of the pitch. But you’ve got to have the right players to do it. Your wing-backs have to be really athletic and your two central midfield players have to be dynamic and dominant midfield players.

“United don’t have any of those qualities. Bruno just doesn’t fit the system.”

It appears as though INEOS may agree with Robson’s assessment, given that they already have one eye on the January transfer window, having recently identified Chelsea midfielder Romeo Lavia as a potential target.

However, according to a report from The Express, Man United also remain interested in one of their summer transfer targets, and they are planning to hold a meeting with Brighton’s Carlos Baleba in the coming weeks, with the 21-year-old already agreeing personal terms.

United made an approach to sign Baleba in the summer, but Brighton’s £115m valuation deterred them from making a move, and Amorim’s only deadline day addition was goalkeeper Senne Lammens from Royal Antwerp.

Brighton seem to have an endless conveyor belt of top young players, with Moises Caicedo their record sale at a whopping £115m, and it is no wonder the Seagulls are set to hold out for a similar fee for another exciting prospect.

That is because Glenn Murray believes the youngster could go on to be even better than Caicedo, saying: “Carlos Baleba, as a DM, I think he’s got even more potential than Yves Bissouma and Moises Caicedo.

“Brighton have had quite a rich vein of defensive midfielders coming through. I think this kid’s better than both of those. I think he’s absolutely exceptional.”

The statistics certainly back up Murray’s prediction, with the Brighton starlet already outperforming the Ecuadorian across a number of important metrics for midfielders.

Jos Buttler quits as England's white-ball captain after Champions Trophy exit

“It’s the right decision for me and the right decision for the team,” Buttler said

Roller: Buttler’s captaincy was untenable after Champions Trophy exit

Jos Buttler has resigned as England’s white-ball captain after their group-stage exit at the Champions Trophy, announcing on Friday that he will lead the side for the final time against South Africa in Karachi.England have already been eliminated from the Champions Trophy, after they lost their first two group games against Australia and Afghanistan. They prepared for the tournament with a trip to India which saw them win only one of their eight matches in Brendon McCullum’s first tour as white-ball coach.”I’m going to stand down as England captain,” Buttler said. “It’s the right decision for me and the right decision for the team. Hopefully somebody else who can come in alongside Baz will take the team to where it needs to be.” Harry Brook, Buttler’s vice-captain, is the early favourite to replace him.Buttler will continue to play for England, and said he wants to “get back to really enjoying my cricket”. He said: “The overriding emotions are still sadness and disappointment. I’m sure, in time, that will pass and I can get back to really enjoying my cricket, and [will] also be able to reflect on what an immense honour it is to captain your country and all the special things that come with it.”Related

Decline and fall: England face up to scale of ODI rebuilding job

Buttler was appointed as Eoin Morgan’s successor in June 2022 and won the T20 World Cup in Australia later that year. But England’s results have declined sharply since and after three unsuccessful ICC events in a row – the 2023 50-over World Cup, the 2024 T20 World Cup and the 2025 Champions Trophy – Buttler has decided to stand down.He hinted after England’s eight-run loss to Afghanistan on Wednesday – their ninth defeat in 10 white-ball games this year – that he would resign, saying he needed to “consider all possibilities” and work out whether he was “part of the problem or part of the solution.””It was quite clear that this tournament was going to be important: results-wise and for my captaincy,” Buttler said. “Two losses and being out of the tournament [was] a bit of a hangover of tournaments before. I’d just reached the end of the road for me and my captaincy, which is a shame and I’m sad about that.”With Brendon coming in only recently, I was really excited to work closely alongside him and hope for a very quick turnaround and to take the team forward. But it’s not quite worked out that way, so just feels like the right time for me and the team to have a change.”1:35

Buttler: ‘Right time for me and the team to have a change’

Buttler’s position came under increasing scrutiny after a sustained poor run of ODI form for England stretching back to the start of the 2023 World Cup. In defence of their World Cup title, England won just three group games out of nine and were the first team to be officially eliminated from the tournament. It began a run that has seen them lose 18 of the last 25 ODIs, including the two that put paid to their Champions Trophy campaign at the first hurdle. While he will likely go down as England’s best white-ball batter, Buttler’s ODI form, like that of the side he led, had been on a sharp downturn over the last 18 months. He averages 26.40 in his last 21 innings, with a strike rate of just over 100 – down from 115.97 over his ODI career. He managed starts in each of the two games this Champions Trophy, coming into the middle order while England had a platform to build off, but got out for 23 off 21 and 38 off 42.Brook is tipped to succeed him, though McCullum said England had not yet settled on a candidate. He praised Buttler’s leadership while saying he was “incredibly sad” to see him step down.”We’ve all seen over the last couple of years how much he’s invested in captaining his country and trying to get very best out of those guys around him,” McCullum said. “People forget that he literally won a World Cup only a couple of years ago, and that can never be taken away from him. It’s incredibly unselfish from Jos to step aside and to leave the post for someone else, and he’s still a huge player for us moving forward. I’m sure we will look at ways that we can get the best out of him in terms of his role, so he can have maximum impact as well.”Both Rob Key, managing director, England Men, and Richard Gould, the ECB’s chief executive, paid tribute to Buttler’s time in charge.”Working with Jos has been a pleasure,” Key said. “He’s been dealt some tough challenges, but never once flinched trying to drive this team forward for the better. Nobody deserved that World Cup win in Australia more. I can’t wait to see him back in the ranks and at his best.”Gould added: “I’d like to thank Jos for all he has given in his two and a half years captaining England Men in white-ball cricket. Under his leadership, England became men’s T20 World Champions, and throughout his time as captain he has been a role model in the way he conducts himself on and off the pitch.”Jos is one of cricket’s all-time great white ball players. I’ve been lucky enough to follow his career from when he first came through as a youngster in Somerset, and I hope we still have many years to enjoy of him pulling on an England shirt.”

Nottingham Forest star out with serious injury in "big" setback for Ange

Nottingham Forest are set to embark on a new era under Ange Postecoglou, though their newly-appointed boss has been dealt a serious injury blow at the City Ground.

Ange Postecoglou set to get to work at Nottingham Forest

Tottenham Hotspur and Celtic fans will attest to the notion that Nottingham Forest fans will experience an exciting rollercoaster under Postecoglou’s stewardship. Still, his trophy-winning exploits at both have created an intriguing dynamic on the River Trent.

Speaking after his arrival to replace Nuno Espirito Santo, the Australian has made it clear he feels the Tricky Trees have a squad capable of competing on all fronts while he is in charge.

Intriguingly, Nottingham Forest star Jota Silva is set for Besiktas in a deal that could be worth over £17 million by next summer, offering an early boost to the coffers ahead of 2026.

After a mixed start to the campaign, the Tricky Trees will have designs on creeping up the Premier League table, and there will be plenty of positivity among supporters that they can begin to strike up a run of results.

However, Postecoglou may now have suffered a blow upon entering the dugout as one of his players could be out until the New Year with an injury concern.

Nottingham Forest see Ola Aina sustain serious injury

According to National World, Nottingham Forest star Ola Aina has been ruled out for around three months due to a hamstring injury, signifying that he may not return to the pitch until 2026.

John Percy described it as a “big early setback” for Postecoglou, and addressing his status, Postecoglou stated before his side faced Arsenal:

Ange must now unleash Nottingham Forest star who "spelt the end for Nuno"

It isn’t just Omari Hutchinson who Nuno didn’t appear to fancy at Nottingham Forest.

The Nigeria international has featured in all of Nottingham Forest’s Premier League fixtures until this point. However, it may now be over to Nicolo Savona to take over the mantle while he works his way up to full fitness.

Postecoglou had to deal with widespread injury concerns at Tottenham last term, so if anything, the Australian boss will hope this is an isolated setback.

Should Dhoni have walked in before Impact Player Hooda?

In his first match back as Chennai Super Kings (CSK) captain, MS Dhoni was given out lbw to Sunil Narine in the game against Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), and that’s led to a debate.Dhoni was given out on the field by umpire Chris Gaffaney when the delivery from Narine turned into the batter after pitching outside off and hit him on the front pad in front of the stumps. Dhoni reviewed it immediately and the third umpire, Vinod Seshan, took some time before reaching his decision. In the replays that were shown on the broadcast, there was a murmur on UltraEdge when the ball passed the inside edge, but it wasn’t a sharp spike, which usually confirms the edge. Seshan went through multiple split-screen replays, with the front-on angle next to a square-leg angle. Seshan was checking if there was a gap between bat and pad, and finally said, “Yes, satisfied. It’s not bat. No bat involved.” Next came the ball-tracking projection, which showed the ball going on to hit leg stump, which meant the on-field decision was upheld.

While Dhoni did not show any visible disgruntlement at the decision, CSK head coach Stephen Fleming came out on to the field when a strategic timeout taken after the dismissal. Fleming often walks out during timeouts, but on this occasion, he spent some time speaking with umpire Gaffaney.”Listening to the directions of the DRS [third] umpire, he seemed very, very under-confident,” Sanjay Bangar said on ESPNcricinfo’s TimeOut show. “He wasn’t really sure because when he was wanting to see the ball at a particular time, he was saying ‘forward’ when he wanted to get it back. So, clearly, he was also under a little bit of indecisiveness, if that’s the right word. But there was something on the UltraEdge, it did pick up something.”
