Axar Patel: 'I am not following a template' as captain

The Delhi Capitals opens up about his philosophy as captain, instincts vs data, and “the thin line” he wants all his players to keep in mind

ESPNcricinfo staff17-Apr-20251:42

Pujara: Rahul needs to go hard even after the powerplay

If a captain is only as a good as his results, Axar Patel is the class-topper at IPL 2025.He has led Delhi Capitals (DC) to five wins in six games so far – in what is his first season as captain of a team in the competition – and, crucially, has found the right people to do the right jobs for him in crunch situations. Mitchell Starc on Wednesday evening, for example. And a lot of the success is down to “trusting my instincts”, Axar said after the Super Over win over Rajasthan Royals (RR).”You take on the responsibility when you know you will have fun with it. I was doing it for my state team, so I knew what to do and what not to do. So when you get an opportunity to lead a side the way you want to and you can play the game the way you want to, why not?” Axar said at the post-match press conference, where he spent a fair bit of time making wisecracks and laughing.Related

DC win an IPL classic in Delhi after Super Over drama

“I am having a lot of fun on the field and off the field. I am doing what I think is right. I am not following a template. I back myself. I am not too experienced [as a captain] but it’s not like I am turning to other people for help. Of course, I listen to everyone, but I back myself for the decisions I am making. Because you need to know what you are doing right and what you are doing wrong. I am enjoying myself so far.”Instincts and gut calls are fine, but T20 cricket has evolved so much that it’s often what happens in the meeting rooms – plans and tactics using data – that supersedes all else.”It’s not like I only go by my instincts,” Axar said. “There is a lot of planning in the background. That is important for my awareness, and it’s very useful at times. But it’s not like I have all the data in front of me and I am following it word for word – bowl this one against that batter and so on. It doesn’t work like that.”Sometimes someone is in form. I see that as a captain, and I decide based on the match situation. Of course, sometimes instincts kick in. But I will take a call based on what I think is best for the team. I choose the option thinking what will work best. Am I taking a gamble? I go by what, in my mind, is 60-40 or 70-30 in my team’s favour. The data is important to know the opposition.””No one should think that the captain is only having fun”•AFP/Getty Images

And Axar is sensible enough despite the lack of experience in leading teams to know how to deal with the mistakes he is bound to make from time to time.”I can’t speak for other captains, but the way I see it, if I have made a mistake, what’s the problem with owning up to it,” he said. “But I won’t necessarily call it a mistake. If two left-hand batters are out there and you need to get an over out of the way, you take a tactical decision based on your resources. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn’t. I can’t call it a mistake. It’s a decision that didn’t work. If it works, you get praised. If it doesn’t, you get criticised. I just do what I feel is right.”That’s an almost constant refrain for Axar – “I do what I feel is right”. Like when it comes to creating a happy atmosphere for the players but also making sure he is respected as the captain of the ship.”I think it shows on my face. Is the captain angry right now, is he a bit serious…,” he joked, before elaborating. “It’s a thin line. I want to keep the team environment friendly and lively, but no one should take things for granted. No one should think that the captain is only having fun. There is a line. What needs to be done to win the game needs to be done first. Then we should have fun. It’s working at the moment. I believe that if you’re having fun, you do better.”‘I wasn’t able to put pressure on the injured finger’Axar has bowled just 17 overs in his six games so far – the wicket of Riyan Parag on Wednesday was his first – and he said it was because of a cut in the index finger of his bowling hand.”During the Champions Trophy, I got a cut in this finger,” Axar said, holding the finger up. “The skin isn’t properly back yet. And bowling was a little difficult because the skin would keep peeling. So I was being careful. It’s only when I felt that the team needed me to bowl that I bowled one or two overs. The whole layer of skin came off when I bowled four overs against SRH [Sunrisers Hyderabad]. I wasn’t able to put pressure on that finger.2:19

Kuldeep Yadav 2.0 – DC’s trump card

“I felt I was bowling well but wasn’t able to have an impact because of this. If I am bowling well, I don’t mind if I don’t get wickets. I ask myself if I have executed my plan well, and if the answer is yes, I am happy.”As a batter, he has moved himself up and down the middle order, batting at No. 4, 5 and 6 in different games. On Wednesday, Tristan Stubbs walked out before him at No. 5. Axar batted at No. 6 and scored 34 off 14 balls.”As a batter, it’s about doing what the team needs you to do,” Axar said. “I think the same way as the captain. I take a call on where to bat based on the resources we have. It’s tempting to promote myself, but it’s a team game. I kept myself back today since we had a right-left pair going, and asked Stubbs to go ahead of me.”I think I am batting well for the last one and a half years. But I haven’t been able to have an impact with the bat in this tournament. Some soft dismissals, sometimes I was over-aggressive. Today I was clear in my head. I knew whom to target. Instead of targeting the faster bowlers who were bowling slower bouncers, I targeted the spinners, who had three overs left. I didn’t play any fancy shots. It worked.”Like most other things he has done so far in IPL 2025, where his side DC are looking like the team to beat at this juncture.

Ruben Amorim now personally wants to sign £17m Portugal star for Man Utd

Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim now personally holds a strong interest in signing an “unbelievable” star, who is open to a move to the Premier League.

Amorim looking to improve squad amid mounting pressure

Amorim was given the benefit of the doubt after a poor first season at Old Trafford, perhaps in light of the fact the manager was working with a squad that wasn’t really his own, having replaced Erik ten Hag in November.

However, the 40-year-old is running out of excuses after spending big in the summer transfer window, with Owen Hargreaves bemoaning the fact that a lot of problems still remain.

Time running out: 5 ways that Ruben Amorim can save his job at Man Utd

INEOS are running out of patience.

ByTom Cunningham Sep 17, 2025

Hargreaves said: “Where do you want to start? There are a lot of issues. How Kobbie Mainoo doesn’t play in this team I’ll never know. He came on for that game and in half hour he was probably their best player, by a country mile. So first of all he’s got to play.

“Sesko is not ready. He scored a lot of goals in Germany but he didn’t look ready today. You look at Haaland, the way he ran about and pressed, he just wasn’t active enough, I know he didn’t get much service but he’s got to be more active.”

Sesko is yet to get off the mark in a Man United shirt, which raises concerns over the signing of the 22-year-old, while it is also very strange that Mainoo isn’t receiving much game time, given that he is a more natural central midfielder than Bruno Fernandes.

The 20-year-old is yet to start a Premier League game this season, but rather than reintroducing the youngster to the side, it now appears as though the United boss is looking to strengthen his midfield.

According to The Daily Briefing (via Football365), Amorim is a fan of Al-Hilal midfielder Ruben Neves, and holds a strong interest in signing the former Wolverhampton Wanderers man, who could be available for as little as €20m (£17m).

Newcastle United and Tottenham Hotspur are also named as potential suitors for the central midfielder, who is said to be willing to return to the Premier League.

"Unbelievable" Neves could excel at Old Trafford

Man United have made a point of signing proven Premier League players in recent times, having signed Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo, and the Al-Hilal maestro fits the bill in that regard, having impressed during his time with Wolves.

The 60-time Portugal international has also caught the eye at Al-Hilal over the past year, particularly impressing with his passing and tackling, while also finding the back of the net on a regular basis.

Tri-series final: Batting-heavy India strong favourites against inconsistent SL

This will be Sri Lanka’s first final in any ODI tournament featuring three or more teams since 2009, and they will be hoping their captain Athapaththu steps up

Madushka Balasuriya10-May-2025

Jemimah Rodrigues has been India’s highest run-getter in this series with 201 runs in three games•SLC

Three times in 33 completed games: that’s how many times Sri Lanka have beaten India in ODIs. Add to this the fact that Sri Lanka’s tri-series final against India on Sunday will be their first final in any ODI tournament featuring three or more teams since 2009, and you begin to understand the scale of the task at hand for an ever-improving Sri Lanka unit.India, meanwhile, are pretty close to the textbook definition of well-oiled machine: their batting has been clicking, their spin attack – led by Sneh Rana – has been penetrative and dogged, while their fielding (arguably their weakest link) has been more good than bad. The weaknesses are few. But, on Sunday, all that fades into the background. Sri Lanka will be buoyed by self-belief with the memory of that momentous Asia Cup triumph, where they had beaten India ten months ago, albeit in the T20 format. But if that defeat wasn’t a reality check for India, their loss to Sri Lanka in the round-robin stage of the ongoing tri-series will have, no doubt, allayed any complacency that might have been setting in.Related

Destructive Richa Ghosh hopes to emulate Dhoni and Perry

R Sridhar to conduct '10-day fielding programme' for SL teams

On that note, here are some of the key talking points ahead of what could be a riveting final in Colombo. Can Sri Lanka contain India?India have scored in excess of 300 in four of their last ten ODIs – including one score over 400 – and in two more of those, they have scored at least 275. In fact, the only games in which they did not exceed these benchmarks were when they were chasing. Suffice to say, India’s batting is on song.In that sense, how Sri Lanka manage – or fail – to contain this Indian batting unit will go a long way towards deciding the tri-series final. During their two group meetings, the first saw India capitalise on the better of both the batting and bowling conditions to steamroll Sri Lanka. But in the second, Sri Lanka managed to keep India below 300, and then nervelessly chased 276 down.Sri Lanka themselves will admit their best chance at victory will be to win the toss and chase, but India have the personnel to make the flip of a coin irrelevant.Chamari Athapaththu averages only 24.07 in her last 13 innings•SLC

Will the real Athapaththu please stand up?You take Chamari Athapaththu out, and you take out half of Sri Lanka’s batting. That used to be true for the better part of the last decade or so. But of late, Sri Lanka’s batters have shown that they can get the job done even without their talismanic captain’s contributions.Against India last time out, Athapaththu’s 23 off 33 balls was just one of several – eight – double-digit scores that helped Sri Lanka hunt down 276 with the likes of Harshitha Samarawickrama and Nilakshika de Silva stepping up. And against South Africa before that, Athapaththu contributed just 6 runs even as Sri Lanka chased down a middling target of 236. Samarawickrama and Kavisha Dilhari put their hands up on that day.But while that bodes well for the future of the side, Sri Lanka’s best batting potential can be realised when Athapaththu is in full flow. Sri Lanka’s highest successful ODI chase, and their only one above 300, came courtesy an all-time great knock of 195 by their captain. But since then, in 13 innings, Athapaththu has had just two scores over fifty, while averaging only 24.07. That last one, though, came against South Africa on Friday, and Sri Lanka will be hoping that that signifies a timely return to form, especially in the lead up to the ODI World Cup later this year.Death-over strugglesAcross the tri-series, Sri Lanka have been arguably the best side at capitalising in the middle overs. In both their group-stage wins, against South Africa and India, they bettered their opponents between overs 10 and 40. However, at both the start and finish of games, any pressure created has been released. In Richa Ghosh and Deepti Sharma, India have the explosiveness to turn losing positions around•SLC

South Africa struck 114 runs in the final ten overs on Friday, while even during their win against India, Sri Lanka leaked 70 runs in the last ten overs despite having limited India to just 151 runs through the middle.Sri Lanka’s failure to capitalise on the platform set in the middle overs with both bat and ball has been a genuine weakness in their game, and one that India will be keen to exploit. Particularly, as India, with the likes of Richa Ghosh and Deepti Sharma lower down, have the explosiveness to turn losing positions around.Weather and conditionsThe heat has been a trial in and of itself across this series, with the South Africans in particular struggling to handle it over long periods. But, on Sunday, the weather forecast points towards a slightly more bearable day’s play, with the potential of overnight showers leading into a cloud-covered morning and afternoon. If these conditions come to fruition, then that, combined with it being a Sunday final – one with free entry into the stadium – should (hopefully) mean the stadium fills up more than it has for the round-robin games.Runs, too, have been plenty this series, despite Khettarama’s reputation as a tough-scoring surface. With a fresh pitch set for the final, the conditions are primed for another engrossing contest.

Ally McCoist says 49ers and the old Rangers staff colluded to make fatal error

Former Rangers manager Ally McCoist feels the club’s new owners, staff and Russell Martin “underestimated” the size of the task at Ibrox before the head coach was sacked.

Martin lasted just four months in charge and paid the price for a poor start after Sunday’s 1-1 William Hill Premiership draw with Falkirk.

Rangers only won five out of 17 games under Martin with their sole league victory coming courtesy of a stoppage-time winner at Livingston. A Champions League exit was followed by defeats in their opening two Europa League games against Genk and Sturm Graz.

Martin was appointed soon after an American consortium secured a majority stake in Rangers but the new-look board now face another major decision.

McCoist: 49ers and old Gers staff made fatal error

McCoist said on TalkSPORT: “We’re sitting eighth in the table and we have a negative goal difference so there’s no surprise at all.

“I think probably the new owners and certainly the old management staff probably underestimated the size of the job.

“There’s a lot of people maybe just look a little bit at Scottish football and say ‘Celtic and Rangers will win their games and that’s it finished because that’s what they do’. But football is a lot more difficult than that.

“I just think that aligned to really poor, really poor business in the transfer market in terms of recruitment.

“It’s easy to blame the manager and that’s where the buck stops, we all know that’s what happens, but the players have got to take some of the responsibility as well. Some of the defending…

“The goals Rangers lost in midweek (against Sturm Graz) were incredible.

Kris Boyd slams "embarrassing" thing Martin had Rangers do in Sturm Graz defeat

It was another night to forget.

ByTom Cunningham Oct 3, 2025

“Rangers look like wee boys. Falkirk out-ran Rangers, they out-fought Rangers and that can happen occasionally but it’s been happening on a regular basis. It’s not good enough.

“The away games. They’ve been to St Mirren, Motherwell, Falkirk, Livingston. It’s not as if they have been to Celtic, Hearts, Hibs, Aberdeen. These are games you are expected to win.”

Boyd: Thelwell's transfer business not good enough

Another former Rangers striker, Kris Boyd, expanded on McCoist’s main point and believes questions will be asked of the likes of sporting director Kevin Thelwell.

“Scotland’s a difficult place to play football,” Boyd told Sky Sports News.

“There’s a lot of people, especially down south, that think it’s easy, it’s not that good. And sometimes the football isn’t that good, you can’t get away from that.

“But it’s a difficult place to play because both clubs in this city demand that you win. Both can’t win at the same time and when you’re not winning, you come under huge scrutiny.

“And that’s where Rangers are at right now because not only Russell Martin hasn’t delivered. There’s a lot of people within the football club failing to deliver in their duty right now as well, and the focus will turn on them.”

Boyd added: “There’s fingerprints from other people over some of the signings that have arrived at Rangers.

“When you think of (Youssef) Chermiti, for £9million, you’ve got to be looking for more. You’ve got to be looking for somebody that’s going to come in and start and have an impact. You’re more or less looking for the finished article, not a project.

“Rangers recruitment, they’ve tried to hit the jackpot with every single signing, bringing them in, giving them an opportunity to try and move them on for bigger money.

“You need to have a core at this football club that allows you to build from within, and that has been lost.”

MS Dhoni, Matthew Hayden, Daniel Vettori, Hashim Amla, Sarah Taylor, Graeme Smith and Sana Mir are the latest inductees into the ICC Hall of Fame, unveiled two days out from the start of the World Test Championship final at Lord’s.Mir became the first woman from Pakistan to be a Hall of Fame inductee. After making her debut in 2005, Mir captained Pakistan in 72 of the 120 ODIs and in 65 of the 106 T20Is she played, including two gold-medal wins at the Asian Games in 2010 and 2014. She is the leading wicket-taker for Pakistan in ODIs, taking 151 wickets with her offbreaks, and topped the ODI rankings for bowlers in 2018.Sana Mir is the first woman from Pakistan to be in ICC’s Hall of Fame•ICC

“From dreaming as a little girl that one day there would even be a women’s team in our country to now standing here, inducted among the very legends I idolised long before I ever held a bat or a ball – this is a moment I couldn’t have dared to imagine,” Mir said. “I am incredibly grateful for this honour and hope to give back to the sport in any way I can.”Former India captain Dhoni helped India break their drought in men’s ODI World Cups, four years after helping them to the inaugural men’s T20 World Cup title in 2007.
