In Focus: Does Grosicki have enough quality for the new look Everton?

As reported by The Daily Mirror, Everton are planning a swoop on Hull City winger Kamil Grosicki this summer.

What’s the story?

The Toffees have been making serious moves in the current transfer window but it seems that Ronald Koeman isn’t quite content enough with his squad going into the new season.

The Mirror report he is interested in signing relegated Hull City’s Kamil Grosicki, who only joined the club from Ligue 1 outfit Rennes in January.

The paper say he’s rejected a chance to move to Germany as he wants to stay in England and that opens up the door for a potential £7.7m switch to Goodison Park.

Is he good enough for the new look Everton?

With more than one club chasing him this summer, it’s clear that the 28 year old is a wanted man. That in itself perhaps highlights that he can be a very effective Premier League wide man on his day. Across last season in Ligue 1 and the English top-flight, he scored four goals and assisted six more in 20 starts for Rennes and Hull.

His form for his country has been similarly decent too, scoring three goals for Poland over the last twelve months and appearing at Euro 2016.

The reported £7.7m isn’t a huge figure in Premier League terms and moving for him would add depth and quality to Everton on the flank.

However, the Toffees are showing a level of ambition this summer that perhaps means Grosicki would never escape squad player status at Goodison Park, rather than being a first pick. If all parties are happy in that scenario then it all makes sense, just don’t be expecting the Pole to be taking Everton by storm.

Leeds United fans divided as club launches £6m Rudy Gestede bid

According to reports in The Guardian, Leeds United have submitted a £6m bid for Middlesbrough striker Rudy Gestede as they look to find a replacement for Chris Wood, who left to join Burnley in a £15m deal on Monday.

The departure of the New Zealand international, who scored 30 goals in all competitions for the Yorkshire outfit last term, will likely see Whites boss Thomas Christiansen dip into the transfer market with just Caleb Ekuban and Souleymane Doukara the only out-and-out strikers the club has right now.

The 28-year-old has suffered three successive relegations from the Premier League with Blackburn Rovers, Aston Villa and last time out with Boro, but he showed just how prolific he can be at this level by scoring 32 goals across two seasons and 60 Championship appearances for the former.

Leeds supporters were quick to have their say on the rumour via social media, and they were divided with their opinions.

While some feel that the Benin international is better than Wood, others would rather “not sign anyone”.

Bertrand gave a strong case for being England’s World Cup left-back vs Malta

England’s 4-0 win over Malta won’t live long in the memories of most Three Lions supporters, but it was a night Southampton defender Ryan Bertrand won’t forget in a hurry, grabbing his first international goal and just the tenth strike of his entire career.

That wasn’t the 28-year-old’s only contribution either, producing one of his best performances yet in an England jersey. While Gareth Southgate’s side were largely rudderless until Harry Kane broke the deadlock just after half-time, Bertrand was one of the few players to make a difference, creating three chances, winning four aerial duels and completing the third-most touches of the ball of any England player.

With Tottenham Hotspur’s Danny Rose currently injured, Bertrand’s performance in his absence has certainly given Southgate food for thought ahead of the 2018 World Cup. Rose is England’s first-choice left-back in the eyes of many, but Bertrand his proving himself to be a more than worthy rival – and another convincing display against Slovakia tonight may just convince Southgate to hand him the role in Russia next summer.

Who do you think will be England’s first-choice left-back by the time the World Cup comes around?

Liverpool fans not happy with Coutinho after first start of the season

Liverpool failed to win for the third successive game on Saturday after labouring to a 1-1 draw against Burnley at Anfield.

The Reds really needed a victory to keep pace on the teams at the top of the English Premier League table but against the resolute defence of Burnley could not find the necessary cutting edge to pick up all three points.

The result comes off the back of a demoralising 5-0 defeat to Manchester City last week and a 2-2 home draw to Sevilla in the UEFA Champions League on Wednesday.

After his substitute appearance in that Sevilla match, Philippe Coutinho was given the chance to shine by Jurgen Klopp but failed to really trouble Burnley goalkeeper Nick Pope.

Coutinho did get himself involved in the match with plenty of touches and passes forward, but the visitors were ultimately difficult to break down and he was eventually substituted off.

Liverpool fans were less than impressed with the returning Brazilian and took to Twitter to deliver their verdict on his performance…

Everton supporters unhappy with defender’s comments

Having taken just seven points from seven Premier League matches this season, Everton currently sit down in 16th position in the table.

Ronald Koeman’s summer spending spree was supposed to bring a successful campaign for the Toffees, but a difficult start to the 2017-18 campaign has led to supporter unrest.

Indeed, Sunday’s 1-0 defeat at home to Burnley left the Merseyside club hovering above the relegation zone, which is not exactly what the Everton owners would have had in mind when Koeman was given significant backing during the summer.

Everton have also only collected one point from their two Europa League matches this season, which has placed more pressure on Koeman.

Toffees defender Michael Keane gave an interview to the club’s official website earlier this week where he insisted that the team’s form would improve in the coming weeks.

However, the England international’s quotes did not go down too well with the Everton supporters, who are firmly of the opinion that actions speak louder than words.

Newcastle United fans hail Shelvey’s performance against Liverpool

Jonjo Shelvey was one of Newcastle United’s key players in Sunday’s 1-1 draw against Liverpool.

The midfielder’s temperament has let him down in the past, and he has not started a game since the opening weekend of the season.

During the Magpies’ 2-0 defeat to Tottenham Hotspur in August, Shelvey was sent off in the 48th minute after stamping on Dele Alli’s ankle.

Manager Rafael Benitez opted to start the Englishman alongside Mikel Merino in the middle of the park, and it was a good move from the Spaniard.

Shelvey was influential during the game and was pivotal in Newcastle’s equaliser when his through ball slipped in between Joel Matip and Dejan Lovren to find Joselu, who guided the ball into the bottom corner.

The goal was netted just seven minutes after Philippe Coutinho put Liverpool in front with a 25-yard strike.

Shelvey, who spent three years at Liverpool between 2010 and 2013, received plaudits from Newcastle fans after the game, while others were left impressed with the partnership between the 25-year-old and Merino.

HYS: Who should be Leicester City’s next manager?

Per BBC Sport, Leicester City have sacked manager Craig Shakespeare.

The former England coach took the job on a temporary basis after Claudio Ranieri’s dismissal last season and guided the former champions to safety, becoming the first ever English manager to win his opening four Premier League games in a row.

But since being made the permanent boss in June, Shakespeare has struggled to deliver. Leicester have picked up just six points from eight games so far this season and the paymasters at the King Power Stadium decided to pull the plug after a 1-1 draw with West Brom on Monday night.

The ultimate question now, though, especially considering the Foxes find themselves in the relegation zone, is who can come in to replace Shakespeare and put Leicester’s 2017/18 campaign back on track.

So, Leicester fans, who do you think should get the job? Let us know by voting below and giving each of our suggestions a thumbs up or thumbs down…

Arsenal fans upset with club’s social media post

Sometimes you just cannot win.

After losing 2-1 at Watford in the Premier League on October 14, Arsenal returned to winning ways with a 5-2 success at Everton, who have since sacked head coach Ronald Koeman, on Sunday afternoon.

The result saw the Gunners move into fifth position in the Premier League table, and despite some poor results, they are actually only four points off second-placed Manchester United after nine matches of the 2017-18 campaign.

Arsenal’s Twitter account posted an image of Alexis Sanchez celebrating his goal against Everton, and suggested that the club’s supporters should be doing the same.

The Arsenal fans took exception to the post, however, as they claimed that the club should celebrate when they actually win a trophy, rather than after overcoming a poor Everton team.

You can understand the point that the Arsenal supporters are trying to make, although sometimes it is just nice to enjoy positive results when they arrive.

Arsenal legend demands Wilshere recall

Former Arsenal centre-back Martin Keown has demanded that Arsene Wenger recalls Jack Wilshere to his Premier League team.

Wilshere, 25, has made eight appearances for Arsenal during the 2017-18 campaign, although six of those have come in the cup competitions.

The midfielder, who is valued at £13.5m by transfermarkt.co.uk, has actually only played 25 minutes of Premier League football this season, but did impress off the bench in Sunday’s 3-1 defeat at Manchester City.

Wenger has thus far been reluctant to start a player that will be out of contract at the end of this season, but Keown has claimed that the defeat at City proves that Wilshere should be handed a starting role in the Premier League.

Keown wrote in his column for the Daily Mail:

“This defeat proved that it is time for Jack Wilshere to return to Arsenal’s first team. Arsene Wenger’s game plan was to stop Manchester City playing and for periods, it worked.

“But where was Arsenal’s midfield creativity? They were not able to play the way they wanted in the final third and that is where Wilshere would have made a difference.

“He commits defenders, he creates space, he finds that pass for Alexis Sanchez or Alexandre Lacazette.”

Wilshere spent last season on loan at Bournemouth after being deemed surplus to requirements, and had been tipped to leave Arsenal during the summer.

The Englishman turned down a host of interest to fight for his spot at the Emirates Stadium, however, and he is still said to be confident of winning a new contract.

Revealed: Majority of Arsenal fans would sell Ozil & Sanchez to fund Fekir swoop

Alexis Sanchez and Mesut Ozil may have produced the goods against Tottenham Hotspur on Saturday, but that could well prove to be something of a parting gift for the Arsenal faithful.

The Gunners’ talismanic duo are still yet to resolve their contract situations, with their current terms due to expire at the end of the season, which could well force Arsene Wenger to cash in on the pair when the January transfer window opens.

But it appears Arsenal fans wouldn’t be too distraught with such a scenario, because they’re already eyeing a potential successor to the attacking pair in the form of Lyon star Nabil Fekir.

Indeed, we recently asked Gunners fans whether their club should sell Ozil and Sanchez to fund a move for the Frenchman, who has netted eleven times in Ligue 1 this season, and according to our poll a whopping 89% would.

That may have something to do with the fact Fekir is Alexandre Lacazette’s former team-mate. All three of the Arsenal striker’s assists in Ligue 1 last season were converted by the attacking midfielder.
