Man Utd fans slam Victor Lindelof after disappointing display against Man City

As a centre-back, the ideal thing that you want is having a recognised partner next to you, who you can build a relationship and understanding with. After all, communication is key. And this season, Victor Lindelof has been joined at the hip by Manchester United’s summer signing Harry Maguire, with the pair playing a combined total of 50 games.

But following the latter’s absence for the Carabao Cup semi-final clash against Manchester City on Tuesday night, Lindelof had to make do with Phil Jones. And all those games of building up a rapport with Maguire went out the window, with the Swede looking completely at sea without his regular partner.

The big fat United quiz of 2019 – how much do you remember about the last year at Man Utd?

As per Sofascore, he finished the game with a 6.6 match rating, making just one tackle and losing possession 12 times. After the game, United fans took to Twitter to voice their thoughts on the former Benfica man, with a few lambasting him.

A couple of fans felt the performance warranted a genuine chance in the first-team for Axel Tuanzebe, with the academy product missing a large chunk of this season thanks to injury.

Another couple of supporters of the Manchester side harked back to Chris Smalling, who is currently on loan in the Serie A with AS Roma, with one fan in particular calling for his return to Old Trafford.

How much of Lindelof’s poor performance was down to the fact he had a change in partner is up for debate. But the Swede’s shakiness in possession (he completed just two of his six attempted long balls) seemed emblematic of not having perhaps the calming reassuring presence of Maguire. Partnerships at the back are always the key, and sometimes individual frailties can be hidden. Unfortunately for the 25-year-old, that wasn’t the case on Monday.

Meanwhile, Manchester United making a swoop for this 13-assist ace could help transform them.

Leeds’ move for Che Adams looking more doubtful

Che Adams to Leeds United has been one of the most talked about transfer rumours this month, but it’s also one of the most unpredictable.

One day it’s happening, the next it’s not, but an update over the weekend has given hope that a deal can be reached.

An article written by Phil Hay on The Athletic gave a promising view of the transfer happening as the journalist wrote that the Southampton board, Adams and Leeds all want the deal to go ahead, but Ralph Hasenhuttl isn’t quite as open to the idea.

Overall though, this update seemed very positive, but just a day after posting that article, Phil Hay seemingly poured cold water on the story.

What’s been said then?

Understandably, some fans were sceptical about Hay’s piece and one United supporter said that he felt like he was being led down a blind alley with this update.

The journalist wanted to clear the air and he replied:

“I’m not saying it’ll happen and to be honest, if Hasenhuttl digs his heels in then it would be brave of Southampton not to let him have his way. But this is the state of play.”

Not good to hear

Hay’s article made it seem like this deal was edging towards completion, but we’re seemingly back to square one after this tweet.

It’d be tough for the Southampton board to justify going over the manager’s head on this one. The Austrian is leading the south-coast club through a great run, winning four of their past five league games including matches against Tottenham and Chelsea. Therefore, they won’t want to mess with what seems to be a winning formula.

It seems that it’ll be tough for Leeds to sign Adams, and this tweet from Hay makes it seem less likely than it already was. Given United only have one striker at their disposal, this isn’t news they wanted to hear.

In other news, Victor Orta deserves a lot of credit for one aspect of his job.

Leeds will need to change their approach to land Jarrod Bowen, says Phil Hay

Phil Hay has discussed Leeds United’s pursuit of Jarrod Bowen during a Q&A on The Athletic.

What did he say?

Leeds have made a move for the Hull City winger, which Alan Nixon has suggested puts the decision in the hands of the Tigers.

Following on from the 1-0 loss at the hands of Queens Park Rangers, Leeds fans were keen to discuss transfers, with one putting special focus on their reported pursuit of Bowen.

When asked the question, Hay replied:

“Leeds like him but having asked at the Hull end, it doesn’t sound like they’d contemplate the sort of deal Leeds would be offering – loan with obligation to buy. Imagine being Hull’s owners and trying to explain to their fanbase that you’d loaned Leeds their best player as Leeds try to get promoted.”

A big disappointment

If Leeds do end up missing out on Bowen then it could certainly be seen as a big disappointment for the club as they look to get promoted from the Championship.

Especially following a game in which the team failed to score, even despite having a penalty, it is clear that the 23-year-old’s influence in the final third can be something that Leeds would benefit from.

From 28 Championship games this season, he has scored 16 goals and added a further six assists – getting six more goals than Patrick Bamford.

As Hay mentioned, it is definitely understandable that Hull don’t want to let him leave on an initial loan, considering just how influential he has been for them.

Virtually impossible: Can you name the year all of these Leeds flops arrived at Elland Road?

They currently sit five points off of a playoff spot, with Bowen a key part of that, so it is only natural that they are reluctant to let him leave now.

It could soon become apparent how much Leeds truly want him, as it seems they will need to improve their offer significantly to sign the winger.

Meanwhile, Patrick Bamford has been slammed by a former Leeds striker.

Arsenal fans react as reports claim Dani Ceballos is keen on terminating his loan

Having arrived on a season-long loan from Real Madrid last summer, it’s fair to say Dani Ceballos hasn’t exactly enjoyed the greatest of times at the Emirates. The Spain international has made just 17 appearances across all competitions, scoring one goal and providing two assists.

A muscle injury saw him miss 11 games over the festive period, and he only recently returned to take a place on the bench.

Unsurprisingly perhaps, according to Spanish journalist Antonio Romero (via Carrusel Deportivo), Ceballos has contacted parent club Madrid in the hope of cancelling his loan – it’s further reported that he is keen on playing more minutes in order to ensure his place for Spain’s EURO 2020 squad.

After hearing about the reports of Ceballos’ potential early exit, Arsenal fans took to Twitter to voice their thoughts on the situation.

A couple of fans hearkened back to Ceballos’ performance against Burnley, when he provided an assist, had 97 touches, and completed all four of his attempted dribbles as per Sofascore.

A couple of fans of the north London side however took a different take on the matter, instead voicing their concerns over why they were letting him go, and insisting that they could live to regret it in the future.

If Ceballos does end up terminating his loan with Arsenal early, then that would speak volumes of the Gunners’ mismanagement of the midfielder. Whilst the Spaniard has missed chunks of the season through injury, it was surely up to Unai Emery and now Mikel Arteta to try and get the best out of the 23-year-old.

Can you name all of these obscure Arsenal signings? Give it a go now!

Instead, the north London side look set to lose a player who they fended off competition from Tottenham to sign in the summer. After starting the campaign in fine fettle with an assist against Burnley, Ceballos’ time at the Emirates may be coming to a disappointing end.

Meanwhile, Mikel Arteta inspired Arsenal’s thrilling comeback against Chelsea thanks to one brave decision.

Liverpool fans laud Alisson following his performance against West Ham

Liverpool were once again victorious on Wednesday, this time against West Ham in the Premier League.

They beat the Hammers 2-0 thanks to goals from Mohamed Salah and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, meaning that they now lead the table by a huge 19 points – they now need to win just eight of their remaining 14 matches to secure the title.

Call yourself a Liverpool expert? How much did each of these big-money January signings cost?

It was also their eighth clean sheet in nine matches in the league, which is another impressive record, and goalkeeper Alisson played a big part in that. The supporters were clearly delighted with his display, with some even saying that he should have been given the Man of the Match award.

Whilst the Reds were not put under pressure too much by their opponents, the London Stadium outfit still managed to register four shots on target, meaning that the Brazil international needed to stay alert throughout the clash.

Others were particularly impressed by his positioning.

It is hard to argue with those claims. As the Ballon d’Or rankings indicated, he is arguably the best on the planet, and his positioning is a big contributor to that.

Others, meanwhile discussed his standing amongst the all time great shot-stoppers at the club, and there is a consensus that he will go down with the best of the best – some believe he is already there.

That is a big claim – there have been some fantastic goalkeepers to pull on the Liverpool shirt, Ray Clemence being amongst them. However, at the end of his time at Anfield, it may be a statement that is hard to disagree with. The comparison with van Dijk is interesting too – in their respective positions, they have been huge signings for the club.

Liverpool supporters will be hoping they get to enjoy him for as long as possible.

Meanwhile, Liverpool must cut ties with this 22-year-old.

Celtic: These fans had mixed opinions on whether they’d take Ki Sung-yueng back at Parkhead

Former Celtic midfielder Ki Sung-yueng becomes a free agent as of February 1st and @20MinuteTims on Twitter posed the question about a possible return to Parkhead.

As tweeted by Sky Sports Premier League (@SkySportsPL) on Friday afternoon, the South Korea international has reached an agreement with Newcastle to have his contract terminated at St James’ Park and is free to find a new club as of Saturday.

Football Insider reported in late December that Celtic manager Neil Lennon had identified the 31-year-old as a possible transfer target for the January window, with the Hoops boss claimed to be a “huge admirer of the Korean”.

Ki played under Lennon during his previous stint at Parkhead, with 77 of his 87 appearances for the club coming under the 48-year-old’s management, and the midfielder scored 11 goals and provided 15 assists for Celtic between 2010 and 2012.

The Korean had fallen out of favour at Newcastle under Steve Bruce, making just four appearances this season and not getting a Premier League start since August (as per TransferMarkt). After @20MinuteTims broached the topic of a possible Parkhead return for Ki, these Celtic fans provided a mixed bag of reactions:

Celtic fans, would you like to see Ki back at the club now that he’s set to become a free agent or is he past his prime? Comment below with your views!

Leeds boss Bielsa still has some explaining to do after leaving Augustin out

Leeds United failed to score for the third time in four games on Saturday, and despite United’s woes in front of goal being incredibly evident, Marcelo Bielsa still refused to put Jean-Kevin Augustin on the bench for Saturday’s game against Wigan.

Of course, the Argentine was asked about this after the game, and he gave something of a weak excuse as to why the Frenchman wasn’t a part of the matchday squad.

“He just arrived. I try to evaluate always how he is integrating and adapting with the play and style. After I take a decision, thinking of the best for the team. Today he would have come on like a second striker,” Bielsa said.

Fair enough, Augustin hasn’t had all that much time to adjust to Bielsa’s style, but with a few minutes to go that system could have been adapted to suit the new man.

Leeds were 1-0 down and dominating with not long left to go, and Wigan were truly parking the bus as United created chance after chance.

Indeed, the Whites created 14 opportunities against the Latics, and not a single one was taken. Without Augustin on the bench, the manager had no choice but to persevere with Patrick Bamford.

The Yorkshire club created so many chances, and they only needed to take one of them to turn the game on its head. While Augustin wasn’t up to speed with the playstyle, operating in the Bielsa way shouldn’t have been the priority late in the game on Saturday.

Augustin would have been hungry to score on his debut had he come on, and if he was playing at his best he would have been a real threat, as he once had a record of one goal every 141 minutes in the Bundesliga back in 2017/18.

Perhaps he wouldn’t have played in the way the manager wanted, but he would have offered something different after over an hour of Bamford misfiring.

Bielsa needs to come up with a better reason for leaving Augustin out on Saturday or else fans will be justified in their criticisms of him.

In other news, Marcelo Bielsa’s decision on this U23 star is helping nobody.

Celtic fans react as Odsonne Edouard lands January award

Odsonne Edouard is enjoying a fine campaign for Celtic, scoring 23 times in 37 appearances for the Scottish giants in all competitions.

And he has been named the Ladbrokes Premiership Player of the Month for January due to his impressive recent form for the Hoops.

The greatest rivalry in world football: Test your Old Firm derby knowledge below…

Celtic posted a tweet on Tuesday afternoon revealing that Edouard had picked up the award, and a number of the club’s fans were quick to respond with words of praise.

Others, though, were more focused on Edouard’s contract situation at the club.

The Frenchman’s current deal will run until the summer of 2022, and it would be fair to say that some of the supporters are fearful of losing him.

Hoops boss Neil Lennon, though, has claimed that the club “have had no enquiries” for the attacker despite a lot of speculation.

In all, Edouard has scored 56 goals in 118 appearances for Celtic since arriving from Paris Saint-Germain, in addition to providing 28 assists.

And it will be fascinating to see what the future holds for the 6 ft 2 ace.

Meanwhile, a number of Celtic fans have also recently been paying tribute to another member of the first-team squad.

Arsenal fans drool over Dani Ceballos’ display against Newcastle

Arsenal fans have taken to Twitter to drool over Dani Ceballos’ performance against Newcastle.

The 9-cap Spain international was making his first Premier League start since a 1-1 draw against Wolves at the start of November, having only previously made seven starts in England’s top-flight since his summer move on loan from Real Madrid.

Despite his lack of action, Ceballos dazzled against Steve Bruce’s side as Arsenal recorded a 2-0 win.

The 23-year-old made three key passes – only Mesut Ozil and Nicolas Pepe recorded more out of every player on the pitch – while he also embarked on one dribble and was fouled twice.

The former Real Betis man also registered one tackle and one interception, while completing a whopping 91 passes with a pass success rate of 95.6% to his name – he made more passes than all but one player on the pitch, with Granit Xhaka’s total of 105 the next closest although Ceballos was withdrawn in the 82nd minute.

Mikel Arteta’s side now sit tenth in the Premier League with 34 points to their name, and are six points off fifth-placed Tottenham with Europe certainly a realistic aim for this season.

Let’s see what the Arsenal fans on Twitter have been saying about Ceballos…

To kick off the reaction, ‘GoonerMartin’ said that the Spaniard was “bringing Santi vibes to the Emirates” in reference to Santi Cazorla – the Villarreal midfielder made 180 appearances for the Gunners, and was a big fan favourite.

Then, ‘AFCBeef’ said that the on-loan Real Madrid playmaker was “pretty immense” against the Magpies.

Elsewhere, Mo said that Ceballos “is the goods” and that Unai Emery “ruined him” – this fan also added that he seemed to be helping Mesut Ozil as well.

Dan then mentioned that the Arsenal No.8 was “excellent” on Sunday and that his good display is “hopefully a sign of things to come”.

Lastly, ‘Arsenal Mark’ said “well played Dani” before adding that he was impressed  with him, but didn’t seem too impressed with the midfielder’s top-knot hairstyle!

Then, @MGJ1886 said that it was a “very good performance” from the Spaniard, and also mentioned that he “really allowed Ozil to play” as well – it’s safe to say that these six supporters were delighted with Ceballos’ display.

James Milner pokes fun at Joe Gomez on Twitter after Liverpool win

Liverpool midfielder James Milner has poked fun at teammate Joe Gomez on Twitter following one moment in the 3-2 win against West Ham United at Anfield on Monday night.

The former Leeds United and Manchester City man missed the clash against the Irons through injury, but he was quick to post on his personal social media account on Tuesday morning when the club shared a video of Sadio Mane’s late winning goal.

Indeed, the move started with Gomez – who is without a goal for the Merseyside outfit in 97 appearances – shooting from outside the penalty area with his left foot.

It then deflected into the path of the onrushing Trent Alexander-Arnold, who hooked the ball back across goal for Mane to finish.

Milner teased his English teammate on Twitter by saying it was “never in doubt” that the ball would end up in the net as he lined up the effort, with a side-looking eyes emoji accompanying it.

Can you name the result these iconic Liverpool images belong to? Give it a go now…

While Gomez will surely be desperate to open his Liverpool account sooner rather than later, he won’t have been too bothered on Monday as Jurgen Klopp’s men secured their 18th straight Premier League win against the Hammers.
