Wolves supporters insist Nuno Santo going nowhere amid Chelsea links

[ad_pod ]

Wolves fans have waved away any potential chance of their beloved manager Nuno Santo joining Chelsea in the summer.

Reports from the Daily Star have suggested that the Portuguese manager, who is one of the most promising around, could replace Maurizio Sarri at Stamford Bridge after his struggles during his first year in English football.

Supporters of the Midlands club would hate to see Nuno leave after the job he’s done with Wolves so far but it appears Chelsea officials are impressed with what they’ve seen.

However, the Molineux faithful are adamant that he’s not going anywhere, issuing hands-off warnings in a show of support for the 45-year-old. Some supporters even took the opportunity to have a dig at Chelsea and Stamford Bridge, suggesting their manager likes to manage in a stadium that actually has an atmosphere.

The Wolves boss boasts a 60% win ratio since taking over and has enhanced his reputation by taking his side to 7th place in the Premier League after being promoted from the Championship last season.

Wolves put in a fine performance against the side Nuno has been linked with on Sunday, leading Chelsea 1-0 through Raul Jimenez. However, Eden Hazard scored a fabulous late equaliser to rescue a point.

Nuno has gained plenty of praise already from Wolves fans this season, especially after Sunday, but here’s what they had to say on claims that he could leave…

Danny Rose’s stock is dropping but it’s not bad news for Tottenham fans

Danny Rose’s stock had dipped massively since his injury and Tottenham fans should be thrilled.

It is never nice marvelling in someone else’s misery, but in the case of Danny Rose, Tottenham fans may feel they can make an exception – both because he is a good player, and his bipartisan past.

Indeed, the more cynical of us will look at the comments he made a few years ago – amidst the most intense speculation over his future – and declare them not-so-cryptic come-and-get-me pleas in 2017.

“I am reaching my peak and have probably only got one big contract left in me,” he told the Sun (via The Guardian).

“Time is running out and I do want to win trophies. I don’t want to play football for 15 years and not have one trophy or one medal,

“I will say this too, I will play up north. I don’t know exactly when, but I will get back up north and play some football somewhere…”

This released at a time both Manchester City and Manchester United were looking to solidify their defensive options, and Rose was often the subject of transfer rumours.

Fast-forward to now, however, and things have slightly changed.

Rose’s career has been littered with injuries, from minor scrapes to major complications, he has spent from two weeks to 260 days out of the game.

He is no longer reliable, and as such, has fallen down the pecking order and, according to Football.London, transfer interest in the player has severely waned after recent problems with form and fitness.

A recent injury picked up in October 2018, which saw him out of the reckoning for nine games, reveals the extent of his fragility – and it is hardly surprising that clubs have now cooled their transfer interest.

He is still a great player, and provides more than capable cover for current starter Ben Davies – so what is there to complain about for Spurs fans? Not much at all, we would say.

Portsmouth could seriously upgrade with Joe Nuttall swoop

It is fair to say that if Portsmouth fans were asked at the start of the season whether they would be happy with a trip to Wembley and a spot in the play-offs, they definitely would have taken it.

Indeed, that transpires as their reality right now, with a Checkatrade Trophy final on the horizon and promotion back to the Championship remaining a possibility at the very least. Despite derailing at the beginning of the New Year, crashing down from first to fourth, Portsmouth have now restored their form and look to be a healthy candidate for promotion and cup victors, although next season could be very different.

Whether it’s Championship or League One football still, the right players added over the summer could prove to make all the difference with it sure to be a much harder campaign.

Although far from a household name right now, Blackburn forward Joe Nuttall could present himself as a brilliant option for Pompey as they aim to bolster their forward line.

Nuttall, (who is valued at £90k on Transfermarkt) is a 22-year-old that has failed to really establish himself within the Blackburn first-team this season, instead becoming a regular for the U23’s. Still. at this important stage in his career, Nuttall will surely want to be settled at a club where he plays week in, week out at a good level.

With that in mind, Portsmouth could provide him with that opportunity seeing as next season, they will lose Omar Bogle and James Vaughan as they head back to their parent clubs.

Joe Nuttall isn’t yet the finished article but with time, Portsmouth could learn to love him.

Portsmouth fans, would you back a move for Nuttall? The Sun (via HITC) linked you with a move for the player last week! Join the discussion by commenting below…

Newcastle United: Zapata an upgrade on the popular Rondon

A clash of philosophies seems to be plaguing Newcastle United. Indeed, Rafa Benitez wants something, but Mike Ashley doesn’t really agree to certain demands. The latest point in the example is Salomon Rondon (as per the Daily Star), who despite being a Benitez favourite, isn’t seen as brightly by the owner.

Ashley allegedly isn’t willing to keep Rondon beyond his loan deal and wants to replace him with someone younger. It’s not a stretch to imagine that Benitez will definitely be displeased by this, but if Newcastle can make a real coup in replacing the Venezuluan, his mood can change.

The Magpies are planning something big and according to reports (via Chronicle Live), they have their eyes on Duvan Zapata.

The Colombian striker’s been a marvel in Serie A, becoming a rampant goal-scoring machine for Atalanta. He’s scored 17 goals and assisted 5 in the Italian top-division, including an eight-game consecutive goal-scoring streak earlier this season. He’s taken no prisoners, thumping in goals against Juventus, Napoli, Roma with conviction.

While Rondon’s been extremely influential towards Newcastle’s success, Zapata is miles ahead right now. Excitingly, the Colombian’s at his prime, moving forward with intensity, getting into promising positions and scoring from almost everything he touches.

He’s strong, fast and built to thrive in the Premier League. And, former Middlesbrough midfielder Martin de Roon even labelled him as a ‘monster’ this season (as per BBC Sport).

Mike Ashley needs to spend big to attain his services, but it’s a signing which could elevate the Magpies from struggling in the mid-table to vying for European places.

Watching Rondon leave would hurt many Newcastle fans, but Zapata can be the breath of fresh air who takes the Premier League by storm.

Newcastle fans, do you think the potential arrival of Zapata can elevate Newcastle’s performances? Join the discussion by commenting below..

Portsmouth: Pompey’s dramatic cup win has made the EFL Trophy a must win competition

If there ever was a team to make the EFL Trophy interesting, it would be Portsmouth.

The final had everything. Dramatic late goals, a penalty shootout, a petition asking for the winner to be placed in the Europa League, it was truly the most memorable EFL Trophy final in years, and arguably the most talked in the edition of the final in history.

Even nowadays after the final, fans are still looking back at how good the game was and how this cup win could spur Portsmouth on to gaining promotion back to the Championship, and this final could send a ripple effect across the Football League that makes the EFL Trophy a competition teams actually want to win.

Of course, there will be some critics against this claim, after all a run in the EFL Trophy means more games are played meaning there is a greater risk to players getting injured, and the recent introduction of U-21 Premier League teams has seen fans boycott these games.

But Sunday’s final showed that getting to the final can be a big boost for the club in terms of mentality and lifting the spirits of a team and fans heading into the business end of the season and that winning the cup can act as a springboard for ending the league campaign on a high note.

Portsmouth now finds themselves as a club on a high after their first piece of silverware in over 10 years, and now both the fans and the players are more confident than ever on gaining promotion heading into the final month of the League One season.

The EFL Trophy might be the definition of a ‘Micky Mouse cup’, but the implications of a club winning it can act as a butterfly effect which ends in that team ending the season better than originally thought.

Portsmouth fans, how important will winning the EFL Trophy be in the long run for the club?

Newcastle United: Survival not in doubt for Geordie faithful

It has been another season with more questions being raised than answers being offered for Rafa Benitez and Newcastle United, as they battle through another relegation scrap.

It seems the old adage of learning from your mistakes does not apply to Mike Ashley, as once again it is down to the last six games of the campaign, and still the club’s fate is not mathematically certain.

Two relegations and countless nail-biting years would make most people realise that something is not right.

But for Ashley, he has his ace up his sleeve — a world class manager the envy of the clubs in and around them in the table.

But for his tactical genius, Newcastle would not have survived last season, nor this.

It is, though, still all to play for this season, with Newcastle looking more comfortable than most, but still nervously looking over their shoulders, knowing they are just one bad run away from being dragged back into the mire.

So we at the Tavern have looked at the remaining fixtures for the season, and determined how the table will look in May.

Fortunately for black and white fans everywhere, we predict that Rafa’s side will finish on 45 points, which will see them 12th — a huge 11 points above the bottom three.

While that will not match their incredible tenth place of last year, it will still represent another spectacular job from Benitez.

The manager endured heavy criticism from pundits early in the season, for his negative tactics — particularly in games against the top six sides — but he is wily enough to have ignored them, and stuck to his game plan.

Of course, his tactics saw them pull off a quite brilliant turnaround against champions, Manchester City in January, and has seen them minimise the impact of defeats in most others — an undeserved 4-0 reverse at Anfield apart.

In our table, with Fulham and Huddersfield’s fates already sealed, it is Cardiff who are the unlucky losers for the last spot, finishing just two points behind fourth-bottom Burnley.

A mid-table finish would be accepted by most of the Geordie fans, but they will not want to have to go through any further seasons like this.

If Rafa commits to the club, and signs an extension to his current deal, the signs must have been made clear to him, and hence indirectly to the fans, that he will be given the budget to ensure that top half finishes can be the norm.

All fans will be relieved if that proves to be the case.

What do you think, Newcastle fans? Why don’t you try the predictor for yourself and let us know how your final table looks…
