According to The Telegraph, Fulham wonderkid Harvey Elliott is all set to join Liverpool this summer after choosing the Reds as his preferred destination – the teenager had a string of Europe’s top clubs chasing his signature.

What’s the word, then?

Well, the 16-year-old was being courted by the likes of Real Madrid, Paris Saint-Germain and RB Leipzig after rejecting a scholarship deal with the Cottagers – Elliott will not be able to sign professional terms until his 17th birthday next April.

The 5 foot 7 attacker became the youngest player in Premier League history when he came off the bench for Fulham against Wolves back in May at the age of just 16 years and 30 days, having already become the youngest player in the Cottagers’ history after appearing in the EFL Cup at just 15 years and 174 days.

Elliott scored five goals and recorded five assists in 28 appearances in total last term.

Fulham had hoped that their fast-tracking of Elliott through the ranks would have been enough to keep him, but he has decided to reject their advances and join Liverpool.

Bodes well for Liverpool’s future attempts to capture young stars

As aforesaid, the Reds fought off competition from the likes of Real Madrid, Paris Saint-Germain and RB Leipzig for Elliott’s signature, which speaks volumes about their pull factor right now – Barcelona have also been linked previously.

Elliott could easily have looked at Jadon Sancho’s rapid rise over in the Bundesliga as reason to join Leipzig, as the former Manchester City youngster is now an England international and valued at £90m on Transfermarkt at the age of just 19.

Given the fact that the teenager opted to link up with Jurgen Klopp instead, it suggests that the young stars of the game see Anfield as an excellent place to develop their talents.

When the European champions decide to go back in for a blossoming footballer next time, they can point to Elliott’s decision, as well as Ki-Jana Hoever and Sepp van den Berg’s, to reinforce the fact that Liverpool is a good place to come as a young player.

Former Celtic star Stiliyan Petrov has called for Kieran Tierney’s transfer situation to be resolved as soon as possible, as reported by The Sunday Post.

What’s he said?

Tierney has been the subject of heavy transfer interest from Arsenal this summer, with the Gunners having bids rejected in June, before offering £25m for the player over the weekend.

It looks to be a hugely important transfer window for the 22-year-old and for the Hoops, with big decisions having to be made about the future.

Petrov understands that’s a natural part of a player’s career, having left Celtic for the English Premier League in 2006, but hopes that whatever happens it’s not a saga that continues for much longer.

Celtic fans aren’t happy about Arsenal’s bid for one of their key players…

As quoted by The Sunday Post, the 40-year-old said:

“There comes a point in the careers of footballers that they weigh things up and make important decisions.

“Kieran Tierney may be in that position in this transfer window.

“If he goes, then the club will get excellent money for him. If he stays, then they are holding on to a quality footballer.

“But these are the kind of matters that you want resolved as soon as possible. It’s important to know where you stand and what needs to be done.”

What should Celtic’s next move be?

Petrov is right with his assertion that this Tierney situation needs to come to a head sooner rather than later.

If he does leave for the reported £25m, not only will Celtic have plenty of extra cash to play with in the rest of the transfer window, they’ll also need a new left-back.

Boli Bolingoli arrived recently from Rapid Vienna to play in the position, but beyond winger Jonny Hayes there is no other support at left-back.

Celtic now need to act decisively and find out what Tierney’s intentions are quickly.

If he does want a big move to Premier League then it’s in everyone’s best interests for the deal to be done as soon as possible considering Arsenal are said to have matched the club’s valuation of the left-back.

The pieces seem to be in place for the deal to be done, it’s now all about what the Scotland international wants to do.

تحدث روسو أيضًا عن نشر عقد ميسي في صحيفة “الموندو”، وأتم: “إنه وضع بغيض وعليه أن يعيشه، من الواضح أن تسريب العقد جاء من نادي برشلونة”.

As confirmed on the club’s official website, Douglas Luiz has left Manchester City to join fellow Premier League side Aston Villa in a reported £15m deal.

What’s the word?

The 21-year-old joined City from Brazilian side Vasco da Gama back in 2017 but failed to make a single appearance for the side in his time at the Etihad.

Work permit issues meant that Luiz spent the last two seasons on loan at Girona in Spain and made 46 appearances for the club. After having a work permit application turned down last August, Luiz leaves City without ever making a mark on the side.

A complete waste

Having signed a five-year contract at the Etihad, there were high hopes for what Luiz could have achieved at City. Indeed, speaking at the announcement of his signing back in July 2017, the Manchester side’s director of football Txiki Begiristain said: “We are pleased to welcome Douglas. He is an exciting player with great potential, and everyone here is looking forward to helping him develop his talent and progress in the game.”

Instead, the man signed in a £10.7m deal leaves the Etihad with barely anything to show for it. Should City have foreseen this very situation transpiring back in 2017? Of course in hindsight it is easy to point fingers, but for the club the stature of City, not recognising the potential pitfalls of bringing in a teenager from Brazil with all the rules and regulations surrounding the game right now feels a little perplexing.

Indeed, speaking last summer after City’s work permit application was rejected, Pep Guardiola said: “It’s so difficult for me to understand. One guy who doesn’t see the player or any training sessions every day has to judge if [Douglas] has the ability and quality to play.

“I accept the rules but I don’t understand. I am so sad and disappointed for Douglas, because he could help us.”

Whilst the club have seemingly made a tidy profit on a player that didn’t even end up playing for them, the biggest disappointment on the whole however should surely be at how City have let such a situation to develop. It’s negligent at best and a total mishap at worst.

وعن مباراة مولودية الجزائر المقبلة، قال: “أتوقع فوز الزمالك، ولكن عليه أن يتعامل مع تلك المواجهة بمنتهى الجدية، وأن يحقق الفوز ويعتلي قمة المجموعة منذ البداية، وعلى لاعبيه النظر إلى نهائي دوري الأبطال”.

Newcastle United boss Steve Bruce has revealed that defender Jamaal Lascelles will remain the club’s captain heading into the 2019/20 campaign.

Bruce has replaced Rafael Benitez at the helm and the former Manchester United centre-back is currently preparing his team for the new season.

There will not be a change when it comes to the captaincy, though, with the Magpies boss confirming that Lascelles would keep hold of the armband.

The centre-back has made 63 Premier League appearances over the last couple of seasons, including 32 during the 2018/19 campaign.

Last season he failed to enhance the glowing reputation he earned following a series of colossal performances in 2017/18, as Fabian Schar stole the limelight at the heart of defence following his move from Deportivo La Coruna.

Fitness permitting, Lascelles will wear the armband for the club in their Premier League opener against Unai Emery’s Arsenal on August 11.

The Newcastle fans have been out in their numbers offering their views on Bruce’s comments, and it’s fair to say the reaction was a mixed bag.

Sampdoria midfielder Dennis Praet is a wanted man this summer with Arsenal reportedly keen back in June only for the Gunners’ interest to be usurped by AC Milan’s intentions to keep the highly-rated Belgian in Serie A.

Now there is a new player in the game in the form of Leicester City who are said to have offered a double-your-money deal to Praet last month in an attempt to secure his services.

Yet despite all of this attention, Praet remains a somewhat unknown quantity on our shores and given it is a possibility, even likelihood, he will be parading his talents in the Premier League this term perhaps it’s time to put that right.

With this in mind, here are the opinions of those in the know…

John Van den Brom, former Anderlecht coach

Before Van den Brom took charge of the Purple and Whites, Praet was 18-years-old and just a bit-part of the senior team. By the time the coach left two years later his prized asset was in possession of Belgian’s Golden Shoe.

You would expect him then to rave about his prodigy and as per Sport Magazine, the current Utrecht boss doesn’t disappoint.

“I am a big fan of Dennis. He is a future top player. He is technically perfect; has a good mentality; good changeover – that boy has a lot. He only gets better when he starts playing. Sensible boy too. Can you enjoy it as a coach? He does everything he does with an idea. I like that.”

Tom De Sutter, ex-Anderlecht team-mate

The admiration is not reserved only for the touchline either. Forward De Sutter benefitted from Praet’s centre-circle scheming for two campaigns in the municipality and in total scored 36 goals for Anderlecht.

His take on the 25-year-old should be of particular interest to Jamie Vardy should Praet move to the King Power, as he was compared to one of the greats of the Spanish game. As per Sport Magazine, De Sutter said:

“Praet was a bit like Andrés Iniesta at the time. His style of play is very similar to that of the Barcelona player. Strong technique, good vision, keeps the ball very well and often looks for the simplest solution.”

Marco Giampaolo, former Sampdoria coach

Iniesta is a lofty comparison indeed but Giampaolo – the player’s manager at Sampdoria until this May – was happy earlier this year to pitch his assessment in the same exclusive ball-park.

It should be noted incidentally that the Swiss coach is now at Milan which surely explains their active interest.

As per Calcio Mercato, he commented:

“Praet can be the Modric or the Pjanic of tomorrow because he knows how to play, fight and has the right competitive spirit.”

Verdict

After concerns about Praet’s physical stature early in his career, the midfielder has grown in every sense, blossoming into a silky central midfielder who ticks over possession neatly and with no little intelligence.

He may not get onto the score-sheet often, nor is he an assist king but with an agreement in place between player and club that he can leave Sampdoria this summer – thus surely driving down his fee – the purchase of Praet amounts to a no-brainer.
