Despite a rather gloomy trip away to Granada last weekend, Barcelona returned to winning ways when they welcomed Villarreal to the Camp Nou.

And this in itself seems to be a big theme of their ongoing campaign.

The Catalans are a true force to be reckoned with within the confines of their own fortress of solitude but as soon as they have to travel somewhere, they are quite unrecognisable.

The last four away games they’ve played across all competitions all ended badly for them. Blaugrana tallied two draws and two defeats in the process while winning all three of their home La Liga fixtures. Clearly, there’s a pattern there and a clear issue for Ernesto Valverde’s troops.

And this weekend, they have a trip to Getafe, a team that’s currently below them in the standings and a team that’s been struggling with victories themselves.

But even though Barcelona can’t afford to underestimate any team in La Liga, especially now when the fight for every single point is so fierce across the board, they have to look ahead strategically and play their cards right.

Valverde has already reshuffled his deck multiple times in Blaugrana’s previous fixtures, which can be seen in the total minutes the players tallied across the board, but while we have seen changes in the midfield and the forward ranks, the defence has been mostly the same at all times.

We’re talking about the centre-back pairing of Clement Lenglet and Gerard Pique particularly. Both defenders are among the only four players who have played every single minute of every single game in the ongoing 2019/20 campaign.

Alongside the two central defenders, only Marc-Andre ter Stegen and Antoine Griezmann have done the same.

And while the clash against Getafe is just as important as any other game in the league, Barcelona have to look ahead because they have an extremely difficult schedule in front of them.

Next week, they will be welcoming Inter Milan to Catalonia and then, after that, hosting an always tricky opponent in the form of Sevilla just days following the big Champions League bout.

So that’s three games in less than a week and a half with all three opponents being genuine competitors. For that specific reason, rotation is a must and seeing how their defence has been quite leaky in recent times, having your centre-backs rested and fit should be a priority.

The Catalans have already been on the receiving end of ten goals in a total of six games played in La Liga so that says enough about their fragility.

Not to mention that Pique already has four yellow cards to his name, meaning that the next one will have him suspended for a game. If that were to happen against Getafe on the weekend, Barcelona would lose an important piece of their defensive jigsaw for the huge clash with Sevilla.

And seeing how we’re talking about a tricky away fixture against a team with three wins in six this term, it wouldn’t be a stretch to say that Pique getting a yellow card is definitely a possibility.

But not if Valverde plays his cards right and this is exactly where Jean-Clair Todibo comes in.

The 19-year-old talent has not really seen much game time ever since he arrived in Catalonia in January this year. In fact, he still doesn’t have an appearance to his name in the 2019/20 campaign and has only played a total of two official games for Barcelona as a whole.

But even though he is still young and inexperienced, there’s a lot of potential to be unearthed in him. Just recently, he’s become Barcelona’s only representative in the 40-man shortlist for the Golden Boy award.

Maybe he still hasn’t had the right chance to show what he can do at Barcelona but Valverde needs to take a gamble and roll the dice with him.

Besides, with all the big games coming up, he will definitely need Pique rested, fit and not in danger of being suspended.

Sooner or later, the Spaniard is bound to get that fifth yellow card but it would really be a shame if it happened when they need him the most.

Getafe are capable of giving Barcelona a run for their money – only four clubs have scored more La Liga goals then them this season – but that game is also the perfect opportunity for Valverde to rest and rotate the players he’ll need most next week.

Currently, Pique is definitely one of them and even though his presence on the pitch is probably going to be missed, it’s a risk worth taking for Blaugrana.

Sheffield Wednesday boss Garry Monk was condemned to his first league defeat as Owls manager on Tuesday evening as substitute Tom Eaves scored the only goal of the game to hand Hull City all three points at the KCOM Stadium.

The striker powerfully headed home an Eric Lichaj cross just six minutes after entering the pitch to bag his first goal for the Tigers.

Some Tottenham Hotspur fans on Twitter are eyeing up a move for Atletico Madrid manager Diego Simeone after things went from bad to worse at the weekend.

Spurs went into the Premier League clash against Brighton and Hove Albion on the back of a 7-2 defeat against Bayern Munich and without an away win in the top flight since January 20, but they failed to do what was needed as they fell to a 3-0 loss.

Simeone has been with the team from the Spanish capital since 2011, delivering a La Liga title in 2014 as well as two Europa League trophies.

The 49-year-old has also become renowned for his side’s defensive record – they have only conceded four goals in eight league matches so far this term for example – and that nous could be needed after Tottenham let in 10 in their previous two fixtures.

Spurs supporters have been quick to have their say on the South American, with one believing he is “the only one who could take us further than Poch”.

As quoted by The Manchester Evening News, Ilkay Gundogan has delivered a huge warning to Liverpool over this season’s Premier League title race.

What did he say?

Manchester City edged out Jurgen Klopp’s side to the league on the final day of the season, thus retaining their status as champions from the year before. However, their start to the current campaign has been less than auspicious, and they already find themselves eight points behind the flawless Reds.

Despite their indifferent beginning, Gundogan has insisted Pep Guardiola’s men’s previous experience will count them in good stead over the coming weeks and months.

He said: “The situation is not a new one for us – we were seven points behind in January of last season, which is a house number, a big gap. But we play against Liverpool twice more, we have the direct duels and we can cut the gap to two points. Everything is still on.”

As Gundogan points out, the Citizens were seven points behind the Reds heading into their clash with Klopp’s side on January 3 earlier this year. The Merseyside club had enjoyed a 20-game unbeaten start to the Premier League campaign, and Roberto Firmino’s second-half equaliser looked to clinch a huge point at the Etihad. However, Leroy Sane’s winner cut the gap to four points, and as they say, the rest is history.

Make no mistake about it, City will take inspiration from their comeback. And the Reds will be anxiously worrying about letting it slip. Gundogan’s message is a reminder that the title race is far from over.

Patrick Bamford or Eddie Nketiah? In some ways, it’s a tough debate but in others, it’s an easy one.

Although the former offers good work rate and willing hold-up play, there’s no denying that the latter is the better goal scorer and perhaps more liked too. At times this term, it’s been difficult not to be alarmed with some of the criticism Bamford has received.

Since he last found the back of the net seven games ago, Nketiah has scored eight times for club and country.

But in replacing the pair so early on Saturday, Marcelo Bielsa made a big statement, one that proves time could be running out for the former Middlesbrough man to impress.

Leeds’ encounter with Birmingham was a game that was typical of how their season had gone, particularly in the first half.

The Whites dominated possession, amassing 70% of the possession and having eight shots to the visitors’ two throughout the first period.

Once again, Bielsa’s men couldn’t find a way to put the ball in the back of the net despite having all of the play.

Bamford had a solid opportunity to score during the first 45 minutes, placing an effort just wide of the target but it was again another match where he failed to beat the goalkeeper.

Off the bench

The 26-year-old’s chance to put his horrible record to bed was taken away from him at the break as Nketiah came on for the second half.

The youngster registered two shots in his cameo but also failed to score in what was an overall disappointing performance from him.

That being said, Bielsa’s call to replace Bamford told us an awful lot about his current feelings on the striker.

In the past, the Argentine has leapt to his defence, saying he values him, but the fact he was withdrawn so early perhaps indicated that he regretted not playing Nketiah from the off.

Although the Arsenal loanee’s impact was restricted when he did come on, Bielsa has been under pressure from supporters to start him after his hat-trick for England U21s in midweek.

Nketiah has also voiced his frustrations at not starting yet but being introduced at half time, rather than later in the game as he has been throughout this season, tells you a start may finally be forthcoming.

Bamford’s inability to score again could just find him on the bench when they face Preston on Tuesday. After all, this substitution was a statement that could prove telling in the coming weeks.

وقال كلوب في تصريحات نشرتها شبكة “ليفربول إيكو” الإنجليزية: “نعلم جميعًا مدى جودة ساديو ماني، وما هو عليه كلاعب وما الذي فعله لنا، لكن من الواضح أن أرقامه ليست كبيرة في الوقت الحالي وهو يعرف ذلك”.

وأضاف: “كان الجدول الزمني على مدى السنوات الثلاث الماضية صعبًا بالنسبة لكثير من اللاعبين في كرة القدم العالمية، بالنسبة له أيضًا هذا صحيح، لكنني لا أعتقد أن هذا هو السبب”.

وواصل: “ماني لا يعاني من مشكلة جسدية، لا توجد مشكلة حقيقية، نحتاج جميعًا إلى فترات راحة من وقت لآخر، وهذا واضح، لكنها ليست مشكلة عامة، هذا هو الوضع فقط، إذا لم تسجل لفترة من الوقت، يبدأ المهاجمون في التفكير”.

وتابع: “هناك لحظة تبدأ فيها بالتفكير في الأشياء الصحيحة تمامًا مرة أخرى وبعد ذلك ستصبح الأمور على ما يرام مرة أخرى، علينا أن نتأكد من أن هذه المرة ليست بعيدة جدًا”.

واستكمل: “بالنسبة للاعب لديه عقلية ماني، فإنه يريد أن يقدم أداءً جيدًا للغاية، لكن هذا هو الوضع الذي يعيش فيه، كل مهاجم في العالم يعرف هذا النوع من المواقف”.

واختتم: “لست قلقًا ولكنني أرى أيضًا أن مستواه ليس الأفضل، هذا واضح، نحن نعمل على ذلك، إنها الإجابة الوحيدة التي يمكنني تقديمها بشأن هذا الأمر”.
