Newcastle have confirmed that U23s manager Neil Redfearn has departed the club, and for some supporters that is good news.

The youth team has not enjoyed the most successful time of late with just three wins in 10 Premier League 2 Division 2 games in 2019/20, causing a few to cast doubt over Redfearn’s suitability for the role.

Along with negative results, there was allegedly a clash of personalities with others at the club, namely his assistant Liam Bramley, and it is believed that is what prompted his decisive action.

Newcastle have refused to comment on the reasons why he has chosen to leave, leading some fans to criticise the club, with others hopeful that Steve Bruce and Mike Ashley will follow him out of the door.

Redfearn only took up the position in the summer and it is perhaps a little worrying that personality clashes have occurred, though with some fans happy to see him go it is fair to say there is a mixed response from the fanbase.

So far this season, things have been pretty bleak in attack for Crystal Palace.

The Eagles are a unit starved of any creativity, instead being one that focuses on defensive shape and rigidness.

That much shines true in the statistics. Palace have scored the second-fewest amount of goals in the Premier League this season with just ten in 12 games, while only one player in their ranks has scored more than two goals – Jordan Ayew, with four.

In addition to this, a recent graphic from TheOther14 – a page that focuses on teams outside the traditional Premier League top-six – makes grim reading for the south Londoners.

What does it involve?

Well, the graph from TheOther14 shows the full extent of the scarce amount of creativity within the Palace ranks.

Out of the teams who aren’t seen as part of the traditional top-six (Manchester United, Liverpool, Chelsea, Arsenal, Tottenham and Manchester City), Palace don’t have a single player amongst the leading figures in terms of chance creation.

20th-placed Norwich have three players on the list in Todd Cantwell, Emiliano Buendia and Teemu Pukki, and it is a pretty sad state of affairs to not see a single Palace player make their way onto the list.

How do Palace’s players compare to the leading creators?

Leading the way with 25 chances created is Jack Grealish, doing so in ten Premier League appearances at an average of 2.5 key passes per game.

To compare, Wilfried Zaha has made two more appearances, but records just one key pass per game, which works out at 12 chances created in total – the bottom-placed man on the above graphic in John McGinn has created 13.

Andros Townsend? Ten appearances, 0.4 key passes per game.

Jordan Ayew? 11 Premier League starts, 0.5 key passes per game – Pukki averages 1.3 for the division’s bottom side.

Ben Chilwell – a left-back – also finds himself amongst the best creators outside the top-six with 1.4 key passes per game across ten appearances.

To compare once again, Patrick van Aanholt has recorded 0.7 per game in two more appearances.

The south London outfit really need to get their act together in terms of becoming a bigger goal threat to the opposition – right now, it is far too easy to defend against them.

Wolves journalist Tim Spiers has passed his verdict on Adama Traore’s turnaround, detailing how his fortunes have changed while appearing on episode 10 of Minus 4: An FPL Podcast.

What’s he said?

Traore may have missed out on finally representing Spain this week because of an injury, but the plaudits haven’t stopped for a man who is now finally starting to vindicate his hefty price tag.

Deciding to utilise an £18m buyout clause in his contract at Middlesbrough, the tricky winger flattered to deceive in his first season at Molineux.

He scored just once and claimed a solitary assist in what was a difficult period for the former Barcelona man. He looked anything but the type of player to come through La Masia.

Fortunately, that has now changed, and Spiers has detailed what he had to do in the face of adversity. He said:

“He’s definitely come on a lot and I know he’s spent a lot of one-on-one time with Nuno out on the training pitch with iPads looking at his positioning. He would tend to get the ball from deep last season and just smash it to the byline and then hope the cross he put in was in a decent position but a lot of them would just go behind. The fans were really frustrated with him.

“He’s managing his bursts a lot more. He’s worked with Darren Campbell, the sprinter, in terms of his speed. The ironic thing is Campbell has made him slower. He’s said if you run at 80% you’re still faster than anyone else but you’re saving your energy. He’s being a bit smarter. He’s got a gift, he’s a freak.”

Freakish

It’s hard to deny with the sentiment above. Traore’s raw pace is absolutely frightening and the way he used it to his advantage against Aston Villa was devastating.

He completed a colossal 11 dribbles during Wolves’ win over the Villans, adding to the five he registered against Newcastle two matches prior.

A man blessed with unnatural talent, Traore has come on leaps and bounds and he already has two goals and two assists in the Premier League in 2019/20.

Adding to that, the 23-year-old has three assists in the Europa League too. Initially starring in a right-wing back role when Matt Doherty was injured, laying on a goal during qualifying, he’s looked even better to the right of Jimenez in the final third.

That was evident against Manchester City when he crushed the Citizens with two goals.

Working more closely alongside Nuno Santo has clearly benefitted him, while learning about the art of sprinting from an Olympian in the form of Darren Campbell is proving incredibly fruitful. The fact he managed so many dribbles against Villa shows that he’s leaving more energy in the tank.

Former Manchester City defender Micah Richards has told BBC Radio 5 Live that Jordan Henderson is “world-class”.

What did he say?

The 31-year-old former England international retired earlier this year and has since made the foray into the world of punditry.

On Monday, he was speaking about the Liverpool captain, and he said: “You’d argue Henderson’s world-class, because of what he’s done and consistency.

“He’s won a European Cup, he’s been consistent over the last three or four years. Yes, it really is [hard to write off a Champions League-winning captain]. You know what, I’m going to go with that statement, I’m going to say Henderson is world-class and a lot of the work that he does goes unnoticed because he’s not getting ten assists a season or scoring ten goals a season.

“I was referring to on the field but off the field as well. I’ve played with Henderson and he’s just an honest guy who would run through brick walls for you, he’s willing to improve, he wants the team to be at its best.

“When Liverpool first signed him a lot of people were raising their eyebrows but now I think we have to start giving him the credit that he’s due.”

World-class captain

To say that the 29-year-old is a world-class player is a huge statement. When you think of the best midfielders in the world, the first names that come to mind are the likes of Kevin de Bruyne, Toni Kroos and Sergio Busquets. Is Henderson in their category, or even close to it? Based on his skill-set and technical ability, you would have to argue he isn’t.

However, as a captain and all-round component of a trophy-chasing squad, it’s hard to disagree.

Following Steven Gerrard’s departure in 2015, the former Sunderland midfielder has taken the armband and has made it his own. Since he stepped into the role, the Reds have finished in the Champions League spots in three out of four seasons, and have reached the final of that European competition on two occasions. Last year, Henderson lifted the trophy to join the select group of Liverpool captains to do so.

This year, they lead the way in the Premier League and already have an eight-point lead over second-placed Leicester City and third-placed Chelsea. Manchester City are a further point back in fourth. After 30 years of hurt, the Anfield outfit could finally end their league drought, and Henderson will be the man on the podium to hold the cup aloft if they do prevail.

Parts of the fanbase have criticised the midfielder for his ability, but his leadership is his biggest strength. Centre-back Virgil van Dijk, himself a skipper with the Netherlands’ national team, has previously stated that he believes Henderson is a “great captain”, whilst talkSPORT journalist Adrian Durham said that he thinks the 55-time England international is a better captain and leader than Steven Gerrard.

Again, a big statement, but unlike a lot of quotes from that particular radio station, they certainly make for an interesting debate.

Is he a world-class player? No. But a world-class captain? Undoubtedly. In that respect, at least, it is about time Henderson receives the credit he deserves.

The Athletic journalist Phil Hay has said that Liverpool are genuinely interested in on-loan Leeds United defender Ben White.

What’s the story?

The 22-year-old moved to Elland Road from Brighton and Hove Albion in the summer on a short-term basis, and he will return to the AMEX Stadium at the end of this current campaign.

Now, it appears the Reds are “genuinely interested” in White, according to Hay. They are not the only club to be looking at him though, with Manchester United also mentioned.

Liverpool were reportedly first interested in the defender last month.

Perfect long-term van Dijk companion

Virgil van Dijk is the undisputed main centre-back at Anfield. His arrival in January 2018 has helped galvanise Jurgen Klopp’s side, with the Merseyside outfit reaching two Champions League finals in that time, triumphing in one of them. Not only that, but they had the best defence in the Premier League last term, conceding just 22 goals in 38 matches.

The place alongside him, though, is up for grabs. Joel Matip, Dejan Lovren and Joe Gomez have all started matches there in the league so far this campaign and, although the former appeared to be making the position his own with seven starts, his recent injury has prevented him from consolidating a place.

As such, a new addition would surely be welcomed as long as they are up to the required standard. Fortunately, White is in terrific form. He has been a rock at the heart of the defence for Marcelo Bielsa’s side, playing in all 16 Championship matches as Leeds have shipped just nine goals. For context, no other side in the division has conceded less than 13.

He has impressed in a number of different areas. He has 1.9 tackles per match, which is the second-most amongst his teammates, whilst his 2.9 interceptions are more than any other player in the league. On top of that, he also has 3.6 clearances per match, and has been dribbled past just 0.2 times per game.

Interestingly, White is also comfortable on the ball. His 85.5% passing accuracy puts him in the top 20 in the second tier and third amongst his teammates, while an average of 59.5 passes per match is enough to put him eighth amongst all of the footballers from the 24 teams competing at that level.

This has all contributed to an average WhoScored rating of 7.22, which is just behind Kalvin Phillips for Leeds and in the top 20 overall in the league.

With a current Transfermarkt value of £2.25m, he could be an absolute bargain and one that Klopp and co might not be able to get their hands on again. Although it is only in the second tier, he has shown himself to be a stand-out performer for one of the best teams in the league, one that plays in front of pressurised crowds at Elland Road.

Considering the uncertainty surrounding the position next to van Dijk, White could be the long-term answer for the former Borussia Dortmund manager.

Christian Eriksen turned in a brilliant display after coming off the bench for Tottenham Hotspur against Olympiacos in the Champions League.

On the chalkboard

Jose Mourinho made a ruthless change during the first-half of the clash, with Spurs 2-0 down.

Eric Dier was sacrificed and the Denmark international was introduced in his stead.

The substitution proved to be the correct one, too, as Eriksen was in game-changing form.

He had 59 touches of the ball, registered three key passes and had a passing accuracy of 80%, per WhoScored.

Not only that, but he also provided a genuinely world-class assist for Harry Kane to score his second and Spurs’ fourth goal of the night, sending a brilliant free-kick into the area for the England international to nod in.

Per WhoScored, Eriksen also won one aerial duel while also taking a set-piece that whistled just wide of the post.

The required influence

Spurs needed a creator who could come on and serve up the chances to Kane and Eriksen did just that.

While Mourinho’s substitution of Dier may have seemed harsh at the time, it was proven to be the correct choice, as the Dane caused problems for Olympiacos from his position in attacking midfield, repeatedly looking to split the defence and create a chance.

There are other players, such as Giovani Lo Celso and Dele Alli, who can do that role for Spurs but Eriksen is a master of his craft when he is on form and when he is motivated.

Prior to Mourinho’s arrival, he had recorded just one assist but his one on Tuesday was sumptuous, while his overall display points towards a potential renaissance for a player who has previously been so key for his club.

With his contract expiring in the summer, it remains to be seen if he will stick around but whether he does or not, Spurs need him to continue in this vein.
