Liverpool agree deal with new sporting director, but there’s a hitch

Things were looking fairly bleak for Liverpool this time last year. The Reds had gone from quadruple disappointment, which included an agonising defeat against Real Madrid in the Champions League final, to struggling to failing to find a place in the Premier League's top four. One year and an entire new midfield later, however, and Jurgen Klopp's side are back on track to find their best form.

Meanwhile, off the pitch, the Merseyside club could be making even more changes as they look to become title contenders and perhaps even pick up their second ever Premier League title in the coming years. And one of those changes could include a deal to finally replace Michael Edwards for good.

Liverpool transfer news

After parting ways with Jordan Henderson, Fabinho, James Milner, Naby Keita and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain during the summer, it's fair to say that Liverpool needed quite the midfield overhaul. So in came Dominik Szoboszlai and in came Alexis Mac Allister, before Wataru Endo and Ryan Gravenberch were the next fresh coat of paint on Klopp's stylish new squad. And, since then, those at Anfield have been flying once more.

What makes their successful summer of transfers even more impressive is the fact that it was the work of temporary sporting director Jorg Schmadtke in a chaotic period off the pitch at Anfield. That chaos could be coming to an end, however, with the arrival of a more permanent solution. According to French outlet Sports Zone, Liverpool have reached an agreement with Max Eberl.

The departing RB Leipzig sporting director reportedly has an agreement in place with both Bayern Munich and the Reds however, and prefers a move to the Bavarians in what could come as a major hitch for Liverpool. Bayern will have to wait for the sporting director's gardening leave to end before making their move though, which opens the door for the Reds to solidify a deal.

Max Eberl's best signings

Liverpool would be getting themselves one of the most impressive sporting directors in Europe if they welcomed Eberl. The former Leipzig man has played a large part in the Bundesliga club's rise, welcoming talents such as Lois Openda and Xavi Simons. Meanwhile, at Borussia Dortmund, he was responsible for the making of a legend in the form of Marco Reus.

It's no wonder that Liverpool and Bayern are racing to secure Eberl's services. The Reds would be particularly boosted when considering their current project – they've already set most of the foundation for success in the form of Szoboszlai, Gravenberch and others. But, the arrival of a highly-rated sporting director should play a major part in avoiding the need to suddenly rebuild when short in one particular position.

The reported target has earned plenty of praise for his work over the years, too, including from Jan Aage Fjortoft, who posted on X: "Shakhtar – Gladbach 0-6 Coach Marco Rose coming to a club near you sometimes in next two years Max Eberl, the Head of Sport, one of the best in the business too."

With that said, it looks likely to be an interesting few months which could end if frustration for Liverpool if Bayern get their wish.

    WHAT NEXT FOR LIVERPOOL?

Klopp's men will aim for an epic comeback against Atalanta in the second leg of their Europa League quarter-final fixture on Thursday. They suffered a 3-0 defeat at Anfield in the first leg.

Spurs now "planning new move" for defender who’s in "huge demand"

Tottenham are plotting a "new move" to sign one "in demand" defender this January as manager Ange Postecoglou looks to beef up his centre-back options.

Spurs chase new defender after van de Ven blow

Reports of a possible new centre-back signing this winter have intensified after Micky van de Ven's hamstring injury, with Postecoglou confirming the Dutchman will be out till 2024. The Australian was forced to use Eric Dier, who was previously well out of favour, and Ben Davies as the centre-back pairing against Wolves on Saturday with Cristian Romero out for another two games through his suspension.

While both Romero and van de Ven will be back by January, the latter man's injury has exposed Tottenham's glaring lack of depth in defence; something Postecoglou and sporting director Johan Lange are now looking to rectify.

The Lilywhites, according to some rumours out of Mexico, have already had an offer rejected for Club America star Sebastian Caceres, while it is believed Spurs have their eyes on Ben Godfrey from Everton as another option.

Chelsea's Trevoh Chalobah is a target for Tottenham as well, with the Englishman very likely to leave Chelsea in the winter window.

Tottenham "planning a new move" for Kelly

Another name to be regularly linked is Bournemouth defender Lloyd Kelly. The Cherries captain was subject to late summer window interest from Spurs, with Postecoglou's side even having a £20 million bid rejected for him.

That is according to journalist Pete O'Rourke, who writes for Football Insider that Tottenham are "planning a new move" for Kelly after van de Ven's injury blow.

lloyd-kelly

The 24-year-old is apparently in "huge demand" already as his contract is set to expire in 2024, making him a potentially cheap option for interested clubs in January.

Bournemouth are reluctant to let their defender leave mid-season, but nonetheless, Spurs are "set" to go head-to-head with the likes of Liverpool and other top European clubs for his signature.

Lloyd Kelly – Bournemouth's "Rolls-Royce"

Ex-England and Spurs midfielder Scott Parker, during his time in charge of Bournemouth, expressed his admiration for Kelly and his one-v-one defensive ability.

"I think Lloyd Kelly has got the attributes and the ability to be a top Premier League centre-half," said Parker (via the Bournemouth official website).

"And I think we are blessed and very, very lucky to have someone of his quality, really. You take players like Lloyd probably for granted in the sense of he makes things look very effortless and easy.

"And when you're watching him on the eye, you put someone else in that position of a ball down the side of a defender or one in the channel and getting in a foot race, he makes it look very easy."

Meanwhile, another former Spurs star in Jonathan Woodgate claimed that Kelly is an absolute "Rolls-Royce" of a defender.

“Lloyd can look like a Rolls-Royce at times," he said.

"It is all a matter of consistency how far he goes in the game. If he goes on performing like that a lot of Premier League clubs are going to take notice."

3 players at PL clubs lpswich Town could loan in to replicate Williams success

Kieran McKenna utilised his past connections with Manchester United wisely in the summer transfer window, the signing of Brandon Williams on loan proving to be a stroke of genius with the 23-year-old excelling in an Ipswich Town strip.

The expansive full-back has scored two goals from ten games under McKenna in his new surroundings, including a crucial late goal away at Huddersfield to secure a share of the spoils in a 1-1 draw back in September.

brandon-williams-championship-leeds-transfers

Missing the last few contests for Ipswich owing to illness, the Ipswich boss will hope he can strike gold again in this upcoming transfer window when it comes to loanees in the building to bolster his squad as they venture into the crunch months to come in the promotion race.

Here are three loan signings Ipswich could potentially try to pull off this January, in the hopes of replicating the success story of Williams…

1

GK – Jamie Cumming

Ipswich could well look to acquire a new goalkeeper in this upcoming January transfer window, to fix the lack of clean sheets present at Portman Road over the last couple of contests – the Tractor Boys conceding a whopping nine goals from their four matches played so far in November, last completing an effective shut-out in a 1-0 away win at Bristol City towards the end of last month.

McKenna could look to Jamie Cumming to solve these issues, an experienced goalkeeper figure at 24 years of age who has amassed 145 games away from parent club Chelsea at a number of loan clubs in the EFL.

Last season, the 6 foot 2 goalkeeper was everpresent at MK Dons in all 46 league contests, keeping 11 clean sheets in total.

If Ipswich need a short-term option in between the sticks, this Chelsea shot-stopper could be their man.

2

CB – Kaelan Casey

Kaelan-Casey-West-Ham

Ipswich could look to add faces in defence this January too, a leaky backline often bailed out by the Tractor Boys in attack thankfully. Yet, this gung-ho approach might not be sustainable.

McKenna could use the loan market effectively to add freshness in at the heart of defence therefore and West Ham's Kaelan Casey could well be the young recruit he fancies.

The 19-year-old, who is also captain now of the West Ham U21s, is developing into a top talent for the youthful Hammers – even scoring this season versus Leeds U21s whilst wearing the armband, before reverting back to his usual centre-back duties.

Yet to be loaned away from West Ham, a move to Ipswich could be a fantastic learning curve for the young defender with the Tractor Boys also gaining a new body to help out an erratic defence.

3

LW – Charles Sagoe Jr

Charles-sagoe-jr

McKenna could also be tempted to add another exciting attacker to his ranks in the form of Charles Sagoe Jr, the Arsenal youngster just one of many up-and-coming talents emerging from the Emirates.

Sagoe Jr would slot straight into the set-up at the Tractor Boys, an attacker who can score goals but also prides himself on being able to create and provide assists too.

It's been evident in Ipswich's overall game this season that the goals are shared out amongst a deadly attacking unit, the likes of Nathan Broadhead and Conor Chaplin scoring a combined 12 goals but have also chipped in with a helpful six assists in all competitions.

The 19-year-old Arsenal attacker has managed to score once this season in Premier League 2, whilst notching up an impressive five assists in seven contests – three of those assists coming against the Man Utd U21's, Sagoe Jr a crucial presence on the day to steer Arsenal to a 4-2 victory.

It's even led to him making his senior debut recently against Brentford in the EFL Cup, Sagoe Jr ready now for a Championship loan.

Rangnick is currently manager of the Austria national team and is preparing for Euro 2024, where his side are due to take on France, Poland and the Netherlands in the group stages. However, he has been asked about speculation linking him with Bayern and has admitted there's been in contact with the club.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Bayern's top choice had been Xavi Alonso but the former Real Madrid and Liverpool manager has confirmed he plans to stay with Bayer Leverkusen after guiding his team to a first-ever Bundesliga triumph. It's thought Bayern could therefore turn to Rangnick for a season with a view to trying to bring in Alonso again in 2025.

  • WHAT RANGNICK SAID

He told reporters: "Bayern Munich have contacted me and I have also informed the OFB (Austrian Football Association). We have a very trusting relationship. My focus is on the Austrian national team. We are completely focussed on the European Championship. I feel very comfortable here. At the moment, there’s no reason for me to focus intensively and specifically on that."

Rangnick was pressed further on what moment could make him change his mind and added: "The moment Bayern would say, ‘We want you’. And then I have to ask myself, ‘Do I even want this?’ If I want to do something else, I will first discuss it with the OFB. We want to look after this team (Austria) as well as possible — and do as well as possible. I have a close and trusting relationship with my team. It won’t play better just because I say, ‘I’ll definitely be here for the next four years.'”

Liverpool now plotting move for “extraordinary” title-winning maestro

Liverpool are interested in signing an "extraordinary" talent who recently tasted league title success, but other Premier League clubs are also believed to be in the mix.

Liverpool shopping for Salah replacements

It is hard to think of a time when the Reds had a more formidable squad on show throughout their history, with great options littered all over the pitch. Admittedly, Liverpool are arguably lacking an elite No.6 – something many fans wanted during the summer transfer window – but Jurgen Klopp has built a group of players who are capable of competing on all fronts this season.

A steady stream of new signings still need to come in moving forward, however, especially if certain players leave Anfield, which could worryingly prove to be the case with Mohamed Salah.

There was strong interest in the Liverpool legend back in the summer, with Al-Ittihad seeing a £150m bid turned down by the club, and it seems almost guaranteed that fresh offers will arrive from Saudi Pro League clubs at the end of the season.

Should that happen, a top-quality successor to Salah needs to be found, and it looks as though the Reds are tracking an extremely highly-rated player.

Liverpool make contact for Ansu Fati

According to Football Transfers, Liverpool are plotting a move for Barcelona youngster Ansu Fati, who is currently on loan at Brighton. FSG have made the first move by making contact by express their interest in the winger, who is reportedly on £200,000 per week.

Barcelona winger Ansu Fati.

"Liverpool are among a host of Premier League suitors for Ansu Fati, but the player wants to prove himself at Barcelona at the end of his loan spell with Brighton. Ansu was allowed to leave Camp Nou on loan in the summer, with the club no longer able to guarantee first-team football to their academy graduate.

"Now valued at €29.9 million by FootballTransfers' in-house algorithm, Ansu could command a significant fee for his cash-strapped parent club, and Liverpool, Manchester United and Arsenal have all expressed an interest."

Fati was once arguably seen as the star of Barcelona's fabled academy, but there is no denying that his stock has fallen in recent years, with the likes of Pedri and Gavi emerging as greater talents. The Spaniard is still only 21 years of age, however, which plenty seem to forget, and he is someone with an enormous amount of potential, despite not necessarily kicking on of late.

Fati's statistics prove that he has struggled to set the world alight on loan at Brighton, with only one start coming his way in the Premier League this season, but despite this, he should still be viewed as someone with so much long-term promise.

Barca manager Xavi once lauded the young attacking as an "extraordinary" footballer, which is big praise from one of the past greats of the game, and if Klopp sees him as a strong option to sign, the Liverpool boss has more than enough credit in the bank to be trusted.

Fati certainly isn't yet at the level where he could come in as Salah's immediate replacement, however, and if he leaves the Reds next summer, a world-class proven option needs to arrive on Merseyside.

Arteta can sign Arsenal the next Aubameyang in "sensational" £75m star

Arsenal are once again looking like the team most likely to challenge Manchester City for the Premier League title this season, even more so after Declan Rice's last-second header secured them a memorable comeback win over Luton Town during the week.

That win means that the Gunners go into this weekend atop the table, and they will do so while many still argue that they haven't looked anywhere near their best.

Mikel Arteta has created one of the best defensive units in the country, which has seen them move up the table, yet they have struggled to score quite as freely as they did this time last year.

However, with news that they could be set to repeat what they did with Rice and sign another team's best player in 2024, that problem could also be solved.

The player in question has been playing in a remarkably similar way to former Arsenal captain Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and is said to be an Arsenal fan himself: Ollie Watkins.

Arsenal transfer news – Ollie Watkins

According to the Daily Mail, Ollie Watkins is a name being considered by Arteta and the board as they look to add more quality to a team desperate to end their two-decade title drought.

However, it won't be an easy deal to complete. It will likely cost the north Londoners an arm and a leg, with journalist Neil Moxley telling GIVEMESPORT: "I think you're going to be talking £75million-plus, if not a bit more because Villa would want to be able to source a replacement."

While the former Exeter City man would be an undeniably expensive acquisition at that price point, Arsenal have already shown that they are willing to spend big on the right players, smashing records to sign Rice from West Ham United in the summer for a fee of £105m.

Additionally, the "unstoppable" forward, as described by Jamie Carragher, has been in electric form this season and has even started to put in performances not too dissimilar to Aubameyang, who, as things go, isn't a bad striker to emulate.

Ollie Watkins could be Arsenal's new Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang

Now, as outstanding as Aubameyang was for most of his time in red and white, it's impossible to ignore how poor he was towards the end of his spell in north London and how he fared at Chelsea after that.

However, since moving to Marseille in the summer, he has started to show glimpses of the greatness Arsenal fans were so used to seeing.

He has scored ten goals and provided three assists in just 16 starts for the French side in all competitions this year, and according to FBref, he is the sixth most similar player to Watkins in Europe's top five leagues.

Some of the other impressive names on that list include Erling Haaland, Alvaro Morata and Sebastian Haller, who are all strikers who have been delivering for their side over the last season or so.

A notable likeness that both Watkins and Aubameyang share is their ability to also link play and offer a creative spark when leading the line, with the Villa man ranking in the top 7% for assists per 90 among his European peers, while the ex-Gunners skipper is only just behind as he ranks in the top 19% in that regard.

Watkins has reached another level this year, scoring a seriously impressive eight goals and providing six assists in just 15 league appearances, and there is no reason why those numbers couldn't improve further with players like Bukayo Saka and Martin Odegaard around him.

At the end of the day, Arsenal require a more clinical striker if they are to win the league. While the fee might be hard to stomach, the 'sensational' Watkins, as described by BBC pundit Garth Crooks, has proven himself in England's top flight, and if he even gets close to Aubameyang's 113 goal involvements for the club, he will be worth whatever they pay for him.
