Is this forgotten Manchester City man an option for Guardiola?

If you look at the strikers that Roberto Mancini has at his disposal at Inter Milan, you’d think they’d be at the top end of Serie A and mounting a serious push for the title.

Yet, as they languish in fourth place with only the bragging rights over their rivals to cheer about, some Inter fans have been left disappointed by what they’ve seen from one striker in particular.

The man in question? Stevan Jovetic – who is on-loan at the San Siro on an 18-month deal from Manchester City. Whilst many forget that he is still a City player, he looks like he might be in limbo come the end of the season with his future at Inter Milan growing more unclear by the day.

Comments in the Italian press this week plunged the Montenegrin’s future into doubt, with the 26-year-old himself stating that “I haven’t come to sit on the bench”.

Inter have the chance to sign the striker at the end of the season for a sum of around €14.5m, but will they want to pay such a fee for a striker that has only wielded six goals in 23 league appearances? It’s yet to be seen, but his future at either club is well and truly up in the air.

Many City fans have been calling for another striker to be brought all season, with the reliance on Segio Aguero seemingly getting greater week-by-week. With Wilfried Bony failing to provide anything at all since signing from Swansea City a couple of years ago and Kelechi Iheanacho still finding his feet in the first team, City need more firepower upfront, so could Jovetic be an unlikely option?

He failed to set the Etihad alight during his first spell, but faced fierce competition from Edin Dzeko, Alvaro Negredo and Sergio Aguero, who all battling for the right to be City’s top striker. So could it be different this time round? If you want to be brutally honest, he’s struggled to find the form he discovered at Partizan Belgrade back in 2007/08, which earned him his move to Fiorentina. He scored 19 in 33 appearances that season and since then he’s had one solid campaign in Italy and has failed to fulfil his potential.

You can’t argue for the Montenegrin unfortunately. At Fiorentina, Manchester City and Inter Milan he’s been surrounded by quality but he seems to be outshone far too easily for a player that should be offering flair, trickery and goals.

Whilst he’s struggled to dislodge Mauro Icardi from the Inter Milan team all season, his market value has continued to drop. These should be the best years of Jovetic’s career, yet he seems to be stuck in an irreversible rut.

What seems clear is that his future may lie away from both Manchester City and Inter Milan in the near future with a club that can offer him a fresh start.

He had so much potential and perhaps he can rediscover that somewhere else, but as for a return to the Etihad? Don’t get your hopes up.

A battle of the best between Chelsea and Man City’s goal machines?

Chelsea’s Diego Costa and Manchester City’s Sergio Aguero are the Premier League’s joint top goal scorers this season.

It is most likely going to be the Spaniard or the Argentine who will finish the season as the league’s top goal scorer. But who has been the better player so far this season?

Starting off with goals scored, both players have scored nine goals for their respective clubs. Diego Costa (7) may have played two games less than Aguero (9), but the Argentine has played 622 minutes whilst the Spaniard has played 585 minutes, 37 minutes less. Therefore, whilst many will see Diego Costa scoring the same amount of goals in two games less, is actually on 37 minutes less, less than half a game.

When it comes to how the goals are scored, Diego Costa statistics shows he is the more versatile of the two. From Diego Costa’s nine goals, he has scored four using his left foot, three using his right foot, and two using his head. All of them were scored inside the area as well. Aguero on the other hand has scored one goal using his left foot, eight using his right foot, none using his head, and all but one of his goals have come from inside the area.

In order for a striker to score, he needs to takes shots, accurate shots. Aguero has taken 43 shots in total, around 4.78 shots per game, with a shot accuracy percentage of 65%. Diego Costa however has taken fewer shots, but has a higher shot accuracy percentage. The Spaniard’s shot accuracy percentage is 84% from a total of 22 shots, around 3.14 shots per game. Whilst it is important for a striker to take as many shots as possible to increase his goal scoring chances, these shots need to be on target as well to further increase these chances.

Next is match performance against big teams. It’s important for these players to perform in these games more than any other as they have the biggest influence on the final places in the Premier League table at the end of the season.  From the teams that finished in the top six last season, Diego Costa has played against Everton, Manchester City, and Arsenal, but Aguero has played against Liverpool, Arsenal, Chelsea, and Tottenham.

Diego Costa scored twice in 6-3 away win at Everton, and once in the 2-0 home win against Arsenal, but failed to score against Manchester City. Aguero also failed to score when his side met Chelsea, but he did score in the 3-1 home win against Liverpool, the 2-2 away draw against Arsenal, and scored all four in the 4-1 home win against Tottenham. Aguero may have scored more (6) in big games than Diego Costa (3), but neither player’s team have lost a big fixture.

A striker can’t just show up in the big games though, he has to be consistent throughout. Six of Aguero’s nine goals have come from four games against big teams. In the remaining five games against what some might say, lesser sides, he has only scored three goals. Three of Diego Costa’s nine goals have come from three games against big teams, meaning the remaining six have come against lesser sides. What this shows is Diego Costa is more consistent, scoring against anyone, no matter the opponent. Aguero though is only showing up for big games, and not against lesser sides. Strikers need to score no matter who the opponent as the result could play a huge influence come the end of the season.

Diego Costa is a better striker than Aguero. He is more versatile as he has scored goals with his left foot, right foot, and with his head so far this season. The Spaniard has scored the same amount of goals as the Argentine in a smaller amount of time and with fewer shots on goal as well. Diego Costa also has consistency as he has scored in all but one game in the league for Chelsea this season. The only place he needs to improve upon is scoring in the big games, like against Manchester City, as these games could win or lose Chelsea the title come next May.

Reading v Arsenal – Match Preview

The Monday night fixture witnesses a fascinating duel between two clubs desperate for a win. If it is anything like the last time these two met in the Capital One Cup at the Madjeski stadium then the fans are in for a treat.

Arsenal managed to knock Reading out of the cup competition in injury time 7-5 that night, after coming back from 4-0 down. They weren’t so lucky midweek as they were booted out of the same trophy by minnows Bradford City.

It comes as the latest blow in a string of disappointing displays for the Gunners resulting in Ivan Gazidis making a public apology to the fans.

Reading are not exactly doing themselves any favours at the moment either as they too lost midweek leaking 3 goals in a comprehensive defeat to Sunderland.

The Gunners should have Olivier Giroud back in the fold following a recovery from a back problem. Laurent Koscielny has resumed training too after a thigh injury. Theo Walcott’s injury situation is due to be assessed too. Andre Santos and Abou Diaby remain out.

The Royals could be heavily boosted by the return of their two key talismans up front in the shape of Jason Roberts and Pavel Pogrebnyak. They may not be able to start but both could feature at some point at the Madjeski.  For Jimmy Kebe and Jem Karacan the game appears to have come too soon and Sean Morrison alongside Alex McCarthy are definite misses too.

The game should be a nervy encounter with the gap growing further and further from safety for Reading and Arsenal are at risk of losing touch with the top four.

Arsenal have played Reading 10 times in all competitions and won every single time so they would expect to keep that unblemished record on Monday.

Should Brazilian consider a Premier League move to revitalise career?

Having won the Serie A title in his first year with the AC Milan, Kaka became a key part of a squad that continued to push for major honours. Operating in a withdrawn role behind the striker, his superb vision, devastating passing and raw pace made him extremely tricky to defend against. However, since moving to Real Madrid in 2009, the former Ballon d’Or winner has struggled to make the same impact. With his future uncertain at this point, would the Premier League offer the platform for this faltering icon to rejuvenate his career?

His time at the Santiago Bernabeu has been hampered by a variety of injuries which have seen him spend a large amount of time in the treatment room. This has hindered his ability to nail down a regular spot in the Madrid team and has also seen him fall out of favour with the coach of the Brazilian national team, Mano Menezes. At the start of this year Kaka was performing far from the standards that had come to be expected. His touch had deserted him and he always looked off the pace, a step behind his team-mates. Yet his revitalised form at the end of this season offers hope that he can still make a meaningful contribution in one of the world’s best teams

At 30-years-old he will want to be playing regular first-team football, but the fantastic performances of Mesut Ozil have limited the playing time available to the Brazilian. The only space in which he could fit into the side is on the right wing, a position that Angel Di Maria is yet to truly make his own. But Kaka lacks the pace of past years to be able to perform effectively in a position which demands speed.

Nevertheless, there are certain to be a number of clubs in England who would be interested in securing his services. Manchester United, Arsenal, Tottenham Hotspur and Chelsea could all fit him with a regular spot, but perhaps not all in his ideal position.

Recent form suggests he is still a player worthy of a world class club, but he would need to be accommodated in an attacking-midfield position to be worth the lay-out. This would mean a switch in formation for Manchester United who tend to play a flatter midfield. Arsenal also lean towards a horizontal middle trio, but by pushing Alex Song and Mikel Arteta deeper they would create space for Kaka to slot in. Though Gunners fans may worry about the Song-Robin Van Persie link that proved so fruitful this season being broken.

He would fit into both Tottenham and Chelsea’s current formations, and could well be a shrewd acquisition for either club. Whether they will be willing to part with such a sum of money for a player in the latter stages of his career remains to be seen, but Claude Makelele was a huge success when he joined the Blues from Real Madrid at the same age, though his role in the side was far less energetic.

Clearly not all these clubs may take an interest in purchasing the playmaker, and a potential stumbling block could come in the fact that Real would no doubt look to recoup a large amount of the €68.5m that they shelled out to sign him. His injury record will also cast some worries over a potential transfer, but given the chance to shine in the starting XI at any club, Kaka still has the ability to make a difference.

Everton interested in Tyler Adams

Everton are reportedly interested in Leeds United target Tyler Adams.

What’s the word?

That’s according to respected journalist Ben Jacobs, who told Twitter last night that Adams is keen on a move to the Premier League.

Whilst he does now prefer a move to Elland Road, both Everton and Sevilla are noted as interested parties. The midfielder is after first-team assurances as the World Cup approaches.

In full, Jacobs said: “Tyler Adams really wants a loan move to Leeds. He’s already spoken to Jesse Marsch, who wants another midfielder despite landing Marc Roca. Leipzig open to a deal after Xaver Schlager’s arrival. Adams needs game time ahead of the World Cup. Everton and Sevilla also interested.”

Imagine him and Gallagher

Frank Lampard and Kevin Thelwell will certainly be looking to revamp the Toffees’ squad, especially with the departure of his talisman Richarlison for a fee rising to £60m.

He could start this rebuild from midfield, however, by signing not only Adams but Conor Gallagher too, who impressed last season on loan at Crystal Palace and has been linked with a move to Goodison Park.

If these two were to join up, they would provide perfect midfield balance, offering tenacity, tough-tackling and the ability to drive the team up the pitch. Last season Gallagher scored eight and assisted three from central midfield, and earned huge plaudits for his relentlessness in the middle of the park.

This, combined with the American international, who ranks in the 98th percentile for blocks and averages 22.53 pressures per 90 would ensure that opposition midfielders would not be afforded a minute’s peace.

The 23-year-old also averaged a 7.40 SofaScore rating in the DFB Pokal as RB Leipzig went on to win the competition. Lampard could use some of that domestic cup form to potentially propel Everton to a first major honour since 1995.

It is therefore unsurprising to see his former boss and current Leeds head coach Jesse Marsch dub him a “special talent” and claim that “the ceiling is massive for him, everyone can see that.”

To steal the gritty midfielder, who has been valued at £13m, from those who were relegation rivals last season would be an early victory in the mental battle for the upcoming season.

If both he and Gallagher could be tempted to Goodison Park, then Everton may be quick to forget the departure of Richarlison as this midfield pairing of Adams and Gallagher could see the Toffees way surpass their performances of recent years.

AND, in other news: Everton plotting no-brainer move for “unique” £80k-p/w machine, Lampard would love him.

Tottenham fans confident defender will stay as he considers his future

According to reports in The Telegraph, Tottenham Hotspur defender Kyle Walker will decide his future at the end of the season after he was linked with a move away from the club.

The 26-year-old is understood to be attracting interest from Premier League rivals Manchester United and Manchester City – who are both looking to strengthen at right-back this summer – while Barcelona and Bayern Munich are also said to be keen on the England international.

Walker was disappointed to be left out of the starting line-up for the FA Cup semi-final tie against Chelsea on Saturday, and requested talks with manager Mauricio Pochettino to find out the future plans for the club.

Tottenham supporters were quick to have their say on the article via social media, with many believing that he will choose to reject a move away to stay at White Hart Lane.

Here is just a selection of the Twitter reaction to the story…

Relegation danger worries Pardew

Alan Pardew is nervously eyeing Newcastle’s proximity to the relegation zone after a 4-0 defeat away to Stoke City.Jon Walters, Jermaine Pennant, Danny Higginbotham and substitute Ricardo Fuller were all on target as Stoke comprehensively dispatched promoted Newcastle at the Britannia Stadium. Saturday’s defeat leaves Newcastle just four points clear of the English Premier League relegation zone and in danger of being sucked into the desperate scrap to avoid the drop.”We have always been conscious we have never been that far away (from the relegation zone),” Pardew said.”The scoreline is going to put some pressure on us in terms of our next home game. It is one of those days you would like to forget as a manager.””But I think we have enough in the dressing room and enough quality to win the next game and give ourselves some breathing space.””I am obviously disappointed with the scoreline. I thought at half-time we were unlucky to be 1-0 down as we controlled much of the tempo.””But the first five minutes of the second half cost us the game. Even before (Steve) Harper made an error we should have got rid of the ball.””We conceded a second and from that moment on we had a mountain to climb.”Stoke City manager Tony Pulis was proud of his players’ efforts, particularly after reaching the FA Cup semi-finals at the expense of West Ham in their last match. “We are pleased, we knew it was going to be a tough game,” Pulis said.”On the back of what we did against West Ham there was a concern the players might not be focussed and a little bit drained.””We are doing things at this club that have not happened for 39 years. The players are not used to the pressure of playing in these competitions at the level we are dealing with now.””We have eight games to go, four at home, and have to make sure we pick points up.”

Worse than Amorim: INEOS open talks to hire 55-year-old manager for Man Utd

All is not well at Manchester United, with Saturday afternoon’s defeat at the Gtech against Brentford keeping Ruben Amorim on nine lowly Premier League wins across 33 matches in the competition.

It’s not good enough, and the ice has worn thin indeed. For INEOS to sack their prized appointment would be an ignominious thing, a real loss of face, but we are approaching the latest critical juncture, and it’s a big one.

Amorim’s candid nature and self-criticism have been both refreshing and blunt, too blunt, across the span of his tenure, but he is capable of picking apart the faults within his Red Devils project. The question is, how much longer can this continue?

Man United host high-flying Sunderland this weekend. The newly-promoted outfit simply have to be put to the sword, else Amorim will join a long list of post-Fergie managers whose tenures became untenable, and they were dismissed.

Already, rumours have cranked up, with the recently sacked West Ham United manager Graham Potter emerging as a candidate. That said, he’s not the only one on their radar.

Man Utd considering recently sacked manager

Potter lasted less than a year in the West Ham hot seat. The Londoners have been in disarray since they parted with David Moyes after the 2023/24 campaign, but there’s no denying the English tactician left plenty to be desired.

Clashes with first-team Irons, including a scepticism over captain Jarrod Bowen’s ability to lead the team, made the 50-year-old’s prospects of turning things around difficult.

Potter is, however, an experienced Premier League manager, something Amorim is not. Described as “a genius” by journalist Sam Morton, the former Brighton & Hove Albion and Chelsea boss is known for his intricate passing patterns and build-up play, but this didn’t materialise in the desired shape at the London Stadium.

Potter would hope, however, that an ostensibly higher level of technical skill would do the trick at Old Trafford, but there are bound to be reservations over a manager who has failed to hit the mark with each of his past two outfits in the top flight.

Spanish sources suggest INEOS and Jason Wilcox are mulling over making their move if Amorim is sacked, and while it would be a contentious appointment, there’s an even more concerning alternative who has been added to the shortlist.

Man Utd's Potter alternative could be worse than Amorim

Even the most ardent defenders of Amorim’s tactics and expertise as an elite coach would concede that it has been a tumultuous relationship.

And now, the Portuguese boss is running out of time, surely just one or perhaps two bad results away from dismissal, should form not change.

And if push comes to shove, it’s not just Potter on Man United’s radar, with talkSPORT revealing that a three-man shortlist has been compiled, and former Three Lions manager Sir Gareth Southgate is in the running.

It’s actually understood that the Premier League side have been in direct contact with the 55-year-old in recent weeks, even with the hierarchy hesitant to bite the bullet and sack Amorim.

Southgate transformed the feeling around the England Men’s team across his eight-year stint, reaching a World Cup semi-final and falling short in successive Euro finals. Across 102 matches in charge, he achieved an average of 2.08 points per game.

However, there have long been questions over Southgate’s command of the technical side of managing, with former French World Cup winner Emmanuel Petit even labelling the one-time right-back as “boring”.

Given that Man United are engulfed in Groundhog Day, walking in the same old familiar territory in the early phase of a season that saw Erik ten Hag dismissed last year (bearing an identical Premier League record after six matches), there can be no more mistakes.

At the 2024 European Championship, England showed off their mentality by reaching the final against the odds, but they flattered to deceive on the tactical front, with critics even struggling to understand what Southgate’s plan was.

This sounds an alarming echo to Amorim’s own situation at Manchester United, and given that Southgate, who parted ways with Middlesbrough in 2009, has been outside of club management for so long, there is very little to suggest that he would turn the ship around and keep it afloat against the club’s big-hitting rivals in the Premier League.

Typically fielding a more conventional 4-3-3 formation than Amorim’s controversial set-up, Southgate would at least provide some semblance of typicality on that front, and that might do the players good. But would it be enough for it to be a successful appointment, and that after having spent £12m to relieve Amorim of his duties?

Southgate has his perks, for sure. He knows the English game like the back of his thumb, and his man-management skills and ability to cultivate a positive working environment are two facets that would potentially smooth out big wrinkles in the United fabric.

But we cannot ignore the concerns over the depth of his tactical understanding, nor can Southgate’s near two-decade absence from Premier League management be overlooked.

If Sir Jim Ratcliffe and co do decide to part ways with Amorim in the coming weeks or months, it is imperative that they welcome the right successor to the Theatre of Dreams.

The likelihood of Southgate being the one for the job in the long run feels somewhat slim.

Leeds now want to sign £20m Championship star who outperformed Gus Hamer

Leeds United have now joined the race to sign a £20m Championship star, who amassed more goals than fellow target Gustavo Hamer across the 2024-25 campaign, according to a report.

Leeds looking to raid Championship clubs after promotion

With Leeds securing the 2024-25 Championship title, they are now at liberty to raid some of their former rivals for their best players, and it appears as though that could well be one of the strategies heading into the summer transfer window.

Sheffield United’s Gustavo Hamer is one of the potential targets, with the Whites now said to be plotting a move for the Brazil-born midfielder, who missed out on promotion in gutting fashion, courtesy of Tommy Watson’s last-gasp winner for Sunderland.

It is little wonder that Daniel Farke’s side are keen on the 27-year-old, considering the level of his performances for the Blades, with the maestro regularly chipping in with goals and assists to fuel his side’s promotion charge.

However, Hamer is not the only Championship attacker on Leeds’ shortlist, with a report from The Sun stating they have now joined the race to sign Middlesbrough star Finn Azaz, alongside AFC Bournemouth and Crystal Palace.

Michael Carrick will likely be unwilling to lose Azaz, given the level of his performances over the past two seasons, and he is thought to be valued at £20m, which means the Whites will have to shell out a sizeable fee for his services.

The Irishman is thought to be high on their shopping list, however, and a move to the Premier League could appeal to the attacking midfielder, given that he has certainly earned the chance to prove himself in the top flight.

Daniel Farke’s side have set their sights on a new left-back, with Junior Firpo now “likely” to leave.

ByDominic Lund Azaz outperforming Hamer in the Championship

Indeed, at 24-years-old the maestro could be entering his prime years, and his performances in the Championship last season suggest he could make a real impact at Premier League level, collecting 12 goals and 11 assists in 45 outings.

The Ireland international outperformed Hamer in terms of attacking numbers, while also placing in the 83rd percentile for assists per 90 over the past year, when compared to other attacking midfielders and wingers.

As such, there was some controversy that the London-born attacker was overlooked for the end-of-season awards, but his omission likely relates to the fact that Middlesbrough finished in 10th place.

While Azaz’s attacking quality wasn’t enough to secure Boro a play-off spot, he could be a real difference-maker in Leeds avoiding relegation next season.

Liverpool now identify £30k-p/w "box-crasher" as perfect midfield target

Liverpool have now identified a midfielder who ticks all the boxes for Arne Slot, according to a report.

Slot keen on a midfielder

The Reds missed out on Real Sociedad’s Martin Zubimendi back in the summer, with the midfielder opting to stay with his boyhood club, but it hasn’t hampered them in their quest to win the Premier League title.

With Arsenal surrendering a two-goal lead to draw with Aston Villa on Saturday evening, Slot’s side are now six points clear at the top of the table, having also played one fewer game than the Gunners.

Ryan Gravenberch has perhaps surpassed expectations by stepping up to the plate and becoming a key player this season, but Slot still remains interested in bringing in another defensive midfielder.

Liverpool now seriously interested in "incredible" £60m Premier League star

ByDominic Lund

One of the players who is now rising up the shortlist is VfB Stuttgart’s Angelo Stiller, with the same report also mentioning the likes of Bayern Munich’s Joshua Kimmich and Wolverhampton Wanderers’ Joao Gomes as potential targets.

And according to a report from Football Insider, Liverpool now view Gomes as the perfect signing to strengthen their midfield, as his style of play fits the exact profile they have been searching for.

Wolves midfielder Joao Gomes vs Arsenal

Any deal will likely have to wait until the end of the campaign, as Wolves view the central midfielder as a key player in their fight against relegation from the Premier League.

However, the Old Gold’s financial issues mean the door could be open for a deal at the end of the season, as they may be forced to make a sale to comply with financial rules.

Manchester United are also interested in signing the £30k-per-week Brazilian, and other unnamed clubs are said to be queueing up for his signature, so the Reds may have to fend off a lot of competition from elsewhere.

Gomes excelling defensively for Wolves

Slot is eager to add another defensive midfielder to his squad, and the Wolves star excels in his duties at the back, ranking in the 99th percentile for tackles completed per 90 over the past year when compared to his positional peers, as per FBref.

Freelance scout Ben Mattinson has provided an overview of the type of player the Brazil international is, and seemed to suggest that he is a well-rounded midfielder, hailing him as a “box-crasher”.

The 23-year-old now has a lot of Premier League experience under his belt, making 65 top-flight appearances for Wolves, and he is at a good age to develop further at Anfield.

If Wolves are forced to cash in on Gomes this summer, Liverpool should make sure they are right at the front of the queue.
