Olly Stone makes his England bid as Notts stay in contention

Olly Stone pushed his claims for an England recall with his best Championship bowling figures in four years as Nottinghamshire and Hampshire reached the halfway stage of their Vitality County Championship match almost on level terms.Stone took four for 62 with new-ball partner Dillon Pennington backing him up with three for 70, yet after slipping to 77 for five with Tom Prest unable to bat after suffering an injury in the field, Hampshire rebuilt around a sixth-wicket stand of 157 between all-rounder Liam Dawson (95) and veteran seamer Keith Barker (74) to claim a first-innings lead of 41 at 276 all out.Nottinghamshire suffered a setback when skipper Haseeb Hameed was out to the second ball of their second innings but ended day two on 33 for one, just eight runs in arrears.Earlier, Nottinghamshire all-rounder Lyndon James had turned his overnight 92 into a first century of the season, finishing unbeaten on 106 as the home side were bowled out for 235.If he can stay fit, Stone’s express pace would make him an attractive proposition as England look for a bowling reset with James Anderson about to follow Stuart Broad into retirement. He last represented his country in two one-day internationals in South Africa at the start of last year but spent much of the 2023 domestic season sidelined by persistent hamstring problems, another frustrating episode in a career repeatedly hampered by injuries.Nine down for 212 overnight, Nottinghamshire’s first innings limped on just long enough to fulfil the objective of seeing James safely across the line. The 25-year-old, a genuine home-grown talent, was looking for his first hundred since hitting three in his breakthrough season in 2022.Last-wicket partner Dane Paterson almost denied him, chancing a single that may well have seen him run out on 95 had Fletcha Middleton’s throw hit the stumps with James still scrambling to make his ground. The moment was forgotten, though, when Kyle Abbott offered up virtually a wide long-hop in the next over and James had the reach to smash it to the off-side boundary for his ninth four, making sure his five and a quarter hours at the crease were not expended on a mere ninety-something.A fulsome swing of the bat then saw Paterson caught behind as Nottinghamshire were bowled out for 235.Stone needed only three balls to make his first impact of the day, finding the edge of Ali Orr’s defensive bat as Hampshire went a wicket down for no runs.Their innings almost mirrored the pattern of Nottinghamshire’s with half their wickets falling cheaply. Felix Organ, dropped off Stone at third slip on three, had added only two more Stone found the edge again and Calvin Harrison made a fine grab at second slip.By lunch, Hampshire were 61 for three as skipper James Vince, having taken advantage of Pennington’s struggle to find his early rhythm by hitting four boundaries in one over, got himself slightly squared up against Paterson and was caught behind.Middleton fell two overs after lunch with no addition, gloving a catch to Clark as he tried to evade a short delivery from Pennington, after which Stone returned to claim his third wicket as Ben Brown nudged one to third slip, leaving Hampshire five down for 77, still 158 behind.Yet thereafter the afternoon turned into a tale of frustration for the home side. After surviving what remained of Stone’s second impressive spell of the day, Dawson and Barker became more expansive, Barker riding his luck on several occasions as the ball flew in unpredictable directions off different parts of the bat.Barker took full advantage of his good fortune, twice whipping Pennington for sixes over the midwicket boundary and twice reverse sweeping Harrison’s leg-spin for four before Dawson, who had been circumspect initially, went after James with three boundaries in the same over. The pair were parted soon after tea when Stone returned for a third spell, the England bowler angling one in from wide on the crease that beat Barker for pace, knocking back his off stump.James Fuller helped Dawson add another 36 before an uppercut off Pennington looped to sub fielder James Hayes at wide third man, after which the innings ended relatively quickly in the absence of Prest, with Abbott leg before to Harrison and Dawson departing with a near carbon copy of Fuller’s shot as Pennington picked up his third.Hameed was a second-ball casualty as Nottinghamshire began their second innings, edging a rashly extravagant drive to third slip off Barker, before Will Young and Ben Slater safely negotiated what remained of the 15 overs before the close.

'Far too long' – Spurs chairman Daniel Levy calls for verdict on Man City's 115 charges

Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy has called on the Premier League to reach a verdict on Manchester City's 115 charges "for the good of the game".

Spurs chairman calls for verdictInvestigation has dragged for yearsUnclear when verdict is comingFollow GOAL on WhatsApp! 🟢📱WHAT HAPPENED?

In an interview with Gary Neville on The Overlap, Levy has called on the Premier League to finally reach a verdict on the 115 charges Manchester City are facing. The club were charged with breaches of the league's financial rules in 2023 and a hearing was held from September to December of last year, but a verdict has yet to be announced. It could be announced this year, but the exact timing is unclear.

While Levy admits it would be "unfair" of him to weigh in on another club's business, he pointedly referenced the amount of time the Premier League is spending on the case. City are, of course, part of the City Football Group and belong to a stable of clubs owned by the same group, something Levy believes is a "concern".

WHAT LEVY SAID

Levy said, in relation to City: "The process has gone on for far too long and needs to brought, for the good of the game, to conclusion."

On multi-club ownership, he added: “That’s one of the areas that has to be controlled; if you end up having clubs owned by states, I have no issue with that in principle but they can do deals with themselves and that puts them at a very competitive advantage compared to everybody else.

“That’s an area of concern.”

Seven draws from seven for Leicestershire as Sam Northeast seals stalemate

Slender prospect of result thwarted by Glamorgan’s go-slow second innings

ECB Reporters Network27-May-2024

Sam Northeast dug in for Glamorgan in a final-day stalemate•Getty Images

Leicestershire remain the only side in either division of the Vitality County Championship to neither win a match nor suffer a defeat after their match with Glamorgan at the Uptonsteel County Ground ended in an almost inevitable stalemate, with Glamorgan 157 for four in their second innings, 201 runs in front with Sam Northeast 41 not out.No team has been promoted with fewer than five wins since the two-division system was introduced in 2000, yet after seven of the 14 fixtures in this season’s competition Leicestershire’s unbeaten record has been enough to keep them in third place in the Division Two table, despite a zero in their wins column. The wet spring has led to a scarcity of positive results across the board and rain took its toll on this match, too, particularly on day three, although periods of stultifyingly low scoring on a slow pitch did not help. Five wickets each for Glamorgan’s Timm van der Gugten and Leicestershire’s Scott Currie and a century for Currie’s team-mate Peter Handscomb were the highlights.Glamorgan’s overnight lead of 58 with one wicket down did not look a particularly promising starting point if the match was to end in any result other than a draw and the slow progress of the opening hour did nothing to alter that perception. After a long wait for the day’s first boundary, extended by a 20-minute interruption while a shower passed through, Marnus Labuschagne began to get things moving but a couple of wickets before lunch provided a semblance of encouragement for Leicestershire, whose ambition at this stage was to bowl Glamorgan out and hope there was still time to overhaul whatever lead they had managed to chisel out.Scott Currie, Leicestershire’s stand-out bowler in this match, picked up a wicket that looked a tad fortunate as Eddie Byrom was given out leg before but there was no good fortune about Ben Mike’s dismissal of Labuschagne, however, the right-armer bowling the Australian with his second ball, one that nipped back to pass between bat and pad and hit just below the top of off stump. Two overs after lunch, Mike removed Kiran Carlson too, the batter perhaps still mindful of the painful effects of being struck in the lower abdomen moments before when he went back in his crease to a delivery that also came back, this time hitting middle. At that point, Glamorgan were effectively 135 for four, with 62 overs left in the day.It opened up a small window of opportunity for the home side, although it had to be borne in mind that they were one seamer short with Tom Scriven injured on day one had no front line spinner anyway, and when Chris Cooke and Sam Northeast guided Glamorgan to 132 for four when more rain arrived before just before three o’clock, a lead of 176.Cooke and Northeast extended their partnership to 66 when play resumed after an early tea, at which point more gathering rain clouds and the very rare sighting of Australian opener Marcus Harris bowling in a first-class match signalled the direction in which the contest was drifting.Harris had bowled only 16 overs in his 13-year career and was left on 99 balls delivered in first-class cricket – still looking for his maiden wicket – when the skies opened again. The 31-year-old Western Australian can claim, though, that he always bowls against Glamorgan, having sent down one over against them last year for Gloucestershire, his only other over to date in the County Championship in his only other appearance against the Welsh county.
