'History repeating itself!' – Ex-Man Utd star believes club made a mistake signing Benjamin Sesko over Ollie Watkins amid 'bad patch' warning

Manchester United have been told they should have signed Aston Villa striker Ollie Watkins over new £74 million recruit Benjamin Sesko.

Man Utd sign Sesko for big moneyTold they should have signed Watkins insteadMakes a "bad patch" striker warningFollow GOAL on WhatsApp! 🟢📱WHAT HAPPENED?

Despite being linked with Watkins earlier this summer, United forked out £74m ($100m) to sign Sesko from RB Leipzig last weekend. However, former Red Devils star Nicky Butt believes the 29-year-old would have been the better option, both for their attack and his team-mates, and United are at risk of "repeating history" after their underwhelming Rasmus Hojlund signing.

AdvertisementGetty Images SportWHAT BUTT SAID

When asked if he liked United's transfer business this summer, he told BetMGM: "I do and I don’t. I know [Matheus] Cunha has done really well over the last couple of seasons but I would really like an experienced striker. I hope I’m wrong but I really hope they aren’t making the same mistakes with [Benjamin] Sesko as they did with Rasmus [Hojlund]. A young player coming in with no Premier League experience, it just feels like history repeating itself. Honestly, for what it would have cost, I would have gone and brought in someone like Ollie Watkins, someone to help and pull the young strikers out of a bad patch. When young players are just coming into the club, when the onus is on them to score goals, if they’re having a few bad games they have to have the safety net of being pulled out of the firing line. Ollie Watkins, or someone like that, would be who I would have been looking to bring in."

THE BIGGER PICTURE

United signed Hojlund from Atalanta two years ago when he was 20 but so far he has not justified his big £72m ($97m) transfer. Sesko is the same age as Hojlund, and while he was less goal shy at Leipzig than the Dane was at the Italian team, the Red Devils have spent an awful lot of money on a striker who is under pressure to justify his hefty sum and solve the club's goalscoring issues. Watkins may have been the safer bet but as he nears 30, the England international does not have the sell-on value Sesko possesses.

Should Tom Brady be speaking to Wayne Rooney? NFL legend’s role at Birmingham questioned after ‘work ethic’ jibe on Amazon Prime documentary

Questions are being asked of whether Tom Brady should have been speaking to Wayne Rooney at Birmingham after his “work ethic” documentary dig.

  • Super Bowl winner sits on the Blues' board
  • Hands on when visiting the UK
  • Winning mentality but no English football experience
Follow GOAL on WhatsApp! 🟢📱
  • WHAT HAPPENED?

The NFL legend has been a minority stakeholder at St Andrew’s since the summer of 2023. His first season on the Blues’ board ended in relegation out of the Championship being suffered, with the decision to appoint Manchester United legend Rooney as manager during that campaign proving to be disastrous.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Footage from that forgettable tenure features on the new Amazon Prime Video documentary ‘Built in Birmingham: Brady & the Blues’. Seven-time Super Bowel winner Brady is seen casting doubt over Rooney’s ability to bring the best out of an underperforming squad.

  • WHAT GOODMAN SAID

Brady is eager to be hands on when not in the United States, but ex-EFL player turned pundit Don Goodman has told of his role in English football: “What I would say is, Tom Brady brings a top-of-the-range winning mentality of what it takes as a professional sports person to be the best version and the most elite version of yourself. That's what he brings.

“He doesn't bring any tactical nous or tactical problem-solving ability; that job belongs to Chris Davis, obviously. But there is no doubt he can inspire players. I read an interview with Ethan Laird, and he speaks a lot about Tom Brady and how he's in awe of him.

“When you've had a career like the one Tom Brady has had, maybe that's why he felt comfortable talking about Wayne Rooney in the way that he did. But can you compare American football and soccer? I'm not so sure. For example, the distances covered by a player in both sports are so diverse, which represents a different physical and mental challenge.

“But what you can't take away from Tom Brady is that winning mentality and that knowledge of what kind of dedication is required to become a success and reach the very maximum of your potential, I would say.

“I was at Birmingham vs Wrexham last season when Rob McElhenney, Tom Brady and even David Beckham were in attendance (Ryan Reynolds couldn’t make it!). Nobody really cared there was a football match going on! I just think the eyes that they will bring to the Championship this season can only be a positive, like it was in League One last season.”

Birmingham and Wrexham stepped out of League One in 2024-25 – with the Blues taking the third tier title in record-breaking style – and both have spent bid in the summer transfer window as they take aim at the Premier League.

They are being tipped to figure among the Championship frontrunners, but Goodman added on them becoming smaller fish in a much bigger pond: “I think you've seen from both Birmingham City and Wrexham's recruitment that they have recognised how challenging and different the Championship will prove to be compared to League One.

“And so, I don't think that the majority of clubs facing Birmingham and Wrexham will view it as a 'cup final', particularly the ones that are going for promotion. I don't think those sorts of teams are going to be viewing those games as 'cup finals.'  I think much of it depends on how the season progresses and on how the clubs are doing, respectively. But there's no doubt about it, the glitz and the glamour that the two clubs bring off the pitch is going to be brilliant exposure for the Championship.

“Based on how superior Birmingham were last season and how they've more than matched Wrexham's recruitment, of the two teams, you would have to say Birmingham would probably be the ones who have a better chance of going up. I've gone from giving them no chance to saying maybe they have got a chance, and that's the danger of speculating before the transfer window shuts.”

'We’re confident in our goalkeepers' – Mazatlán FC coach Robert Dante Siboldi shuts down Guillermo Ochoa rumors as Mexico star remains a free agent

Mexico legend Guillermo Ochoa has been without a club since the summer and continues searching for a team where he can remain in contention for Javier Aguirre’s Mexico squad at the 2026 World Cup. The 39-year-old goalkeeper hopes to secure a starting role to strengthen his chances of making history with a sixth World Cup appearance.

Rumors recently linked Ochoa with Mazatlán FC, but head coach Robert Dante Siboldi dismissed the speculation.

“No, I don’t know anything about that," he said. "It’s just rumors. He’s a great figure in Mexican football, but we are confident with the three goalkeepers we have, even with the fourth who has a great future. There’s nothing to it, it’s only a rumor."

There’s no need to hit the panic button just yet, but the fact that Ochoa is struggling to find a club at age 40 is certainly not a good sign for his chances of reaching next year’s World Cup – a milestone that would be a fitting reward for such an outstanding career.

The starting goalkeeper spot for Mexico is expected to be contested between Luis Ángel Malagón and Raúl Rangel, while the battle for the third roster spot remains open. Ochoa is in contention alongside Alex Padilla, Carlos Acevedo, Carlos Moreno, and other promising goalkeepers.

Price, 21, scored in both halves as the Baggies ran out 3-2 winners to consign the Red Dragons to back-to-back league defeats following last season's rise from League One – their third promotion in a row.

It was a carnival atmosphere inside the Racecourse Ground but Wrexham could not use that to their advantage as Price put West Brom in front after 20 minutes. The Everton academy graduate peeled away from the hosts' defence superbly to latch onto Tom Fellows' cross before firing home from close range.

And things soon went from bad to worse for Phil Parkinson's side when Josh Windass, a summer signing following his departure from beleaguered Sheffield Wednesday, had to be replaced with a suspected hamstring injury as the visitors grew in confidence.

However after Kieffer Moore was allowed to wander freely into the right-hand channel, the 6ft 5in striker's cross eventually found its way through to Lewis O'Brien, who slotted home Wrexham's first league goal of the season on home soil.

Having weathered the storm, Wrexham started the second half the better of the two teams and almost took the lead when club-record signing Nathan Broadhead fired just wide following another dangerous cross from Moore.

But West Brom started to grow into the game following the introduction of Jed Wallace, and the winger soon fired Ryan Mason's men back in front after getting on the end of a lovely pass from fellow substitute Michael Johnston.

And West Brom soon made it 3-1 just seven minutes later when Price headed home from Johnston's cross, leading to the travelling fans to start chanting 'Reynolds, what's the score?' in the direction of the watching Wrexham co-chairman and Hollywood star, Ryan.

Sam Smith set up a nervy finish when he headed past West Brom goalkeeper Josh Griffiths in the fifth minute of stoppage time, but it was too little too late in the end for Wrexham.

    THE MVP

Price continued his excellent start to the season by making the all important difference in either half. The midfielder, who scored the only goal in West Brom's opening day victory over Blackburn Rovers, was ice cold in front of goal and will be one to watch for the remainder of the Championship season.

  • THE BIG LOSER

It was an unfortunate afternoon for Windass after the Wrexham attacker had to be substituted midway through the first half with a suspected hamstring injury. The 31-year-old scored his side's first Championship goal in 43 years in the narrow 2-1 defeat against Southampton on the opening day of the season, but is now set for a spell on the sidelines.

Liverpool were second-best for much of their clash with Newcastle on Monday despite having a player advantage following Anthony Gordon's red card. Their 2-0 lead evaporated after Bruno Guimaraes and William Osula struck, but 16-year-old Rio Ngumoha's 100th-minute effort ensured the Reds left St James' Park with all three points.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

The reigning Premier League champions were strangely poor after Gordon was dismissed, failing to utilise their advantage as they let the Magpies back into the contest and nearly threw away the victory. Speaking after the game, Carragher made no excuses for his former side and claimed they would have lost if Newcastle had not had a player dismissed for a rogue challenge.

  • WHAT CARRAGHER SAID

Speaking on Sky Sports, Carragher said: "I think what we've seen tonight is possibly one of the worst performances from a winning team and one of the best performances from a losing team.

"Liverpool won't care right now, of course, they'll be absolutely ecstatic, but Eddie Howe's men tonight were absolutely outstanding. "It did (seem like it was over at 2-0), but that crowd, that intensity they played with, I actually fear what the score might have been if it had been 11 vs 11. I think Newcastle would've won the game – they were far better than Liverpool in every aspect."

Talking Tactics: USMNT star Christian Pulisic has another role to embrace under new manager Max Allegri at AC Milan – but that ultimately might not be a bad thing

The USMNT star is playing as a striker of sorts for his new manager, and it might prove to be a valuable learning experience

So, Christian Pulisic has a new manager at AC Milan. Is this a good thing? The American was truly excellent under Stefano Pioli for about 18 months, and has, in various stretches, looked good under three new managers since. Paulo Fonseca managed 24 matches and did a decent job with Pulisic. Sergio Conceicao was the battle-hardened interim guy who never really got the best out of him.

And now we have Max Allegri, the oft-maligned Italian, here for his second stint at Milan. Allegri is a curious manager. His teams are, typically, excellent defensively. They play Italian football as it was always envisioned: physical, hard-to-beat, opportunistic. Allegri sides will never blow you away. Instead, they're here to beat you down by pure attrition. A good Allegri team frustrates you, gives you nothing, and, basically forces you to give up.

In many ways, it's a defensive player's dream. But for attackers, it can be a bit limiting. When structure is everything, attacking players who like to play with freedom tend to suffer. And that is the crucial trade-off. Milan are going to be a nightmare to play against – but they're not going to score loads of goals.

That leaves Pulisic in a bit of a tricky situation. And Allegri doesn't quite know how to use him. Pulisic has already played a bit of everywhere under the new boss, Allegri floating him around from position-to-position as he finds the right spot. Twice, though, Pulisic has been used almost as a striker, often the furthest player forward in a team without an attacking focal point.

On paper, it doesn't make loads of sense. Yet analyze things a little deeper, and it could be an intriguing set up that gets something different out of Pulisic's arsenal.

GOAL US looks at how the USMNT star's game could change under the new manager.

Getty Images SportThe faults of Allegri ball

There are two ways of looking at Allegri's managerial style. The first, and perhaps most obvious one, is to praise him for what he has achieved. The Italian's record makes for excellent reading. He has won Serie A five times and Coppa Italia five times. He has effectively managed numerous legends of the game, and been routinely praised for his man management and willingness to give young talent opportunities to play. Much like Jose Mourinho or Antonio Conte, Allegri may be boring, but, well, scoreboard.

And then there's the other way of analyzing things. Allegri is boring. He is an ideologue to an absolute fault. He has an established way of playing. It has brought him results in the past. But it is not football that keeps fans happy, nor is it a style that has yielded any sort of success in recent years.

Allegri's last Serie A win was 2019. He was sacked by Juventus in 2024 after finishing third, 23 points behind league-winning Inter. That team lost the second-fewest games in the league, but were simply woeful in front of goal, managing just 54 goals in 38 games – some 35 less than the Scudetto victors.

AdvertisementGetty Images SportAllegri's Milan vision

This doesn't seem, then, like the ideal circumstances for Pulisic to establish himself again. Remember, it has been a strange few months for the USMNT star, who ended the campaign on a rather tepid note, and then made headlines for the wrong reasons after dropping out of the Gold Cup squad. This doesn't mean that the handbrake has to be ripped off, but Pulisic could perhaps do with more of an attacking coach.

Well, Allegri isn't that. Still, what can he offer?

His Milan set up, so far at least, has been intriguing. Like many previous iterations of his sides, Allegri has packed the midfield with hard-working runners capable of covering ground. His wing backs, in this case Pervis Estupinan and Alexis Saelemaekers, are markedly balanced players who can do a bit of everything. They are shielded by three no-nonsense centerbacks and a goalkeeper who likes to play long. So far, so normal.

But up front is where things get intriguing. Against Bari, Allegri used Rafa Leao and Pulisic as a striking duo of sorts, effectively trusting his two fastest and most creative players to do all of the hard work up front – score, assist, win the long balls. Milan won. Against Cremonese, Pulisic played alongside Mexico's Santi Gimenez, a more recognizable striker, but not an all round No. 9. Milan lost.

Getty Images SportMatch winning against Bari

That Bari game, though, offered some promise. Playing Leao and Pulisic alongside each other in narrow roles was always going to be something of a risk. Leao likes to start out wide and cut in. He relies on space. Pulisic, meanwhile, sort of roams, taking his spots here and there. Without a focal point, it could have all gone wrong. Instead, Pulisic starred – especially when Leao went off.

He scored one goal, was crucial in the build up to another, and created more chances than anyone on the pitch. He also hit the woodwork – and might have easily finished the game with three had it not been for some goalkeeping heroics. He had more touches in the Bari box than any other Milan player.

And while there were some concerns about his tactical fit, Pulisic got it mostly right, and thrived in a slightly narrower role – even if he was asked to reject his instinct to press higher up the pitch.

And to round things off, Milan were markedly worse when Pulisic wasn't on the pitch. It was, in total, 66 remarkably convincing minutes.

Getty Images SportEffective in defeat against Cremonense

The Cremonese game was different. More broadly, it showed the issues with Allegri as a whole. Milan controlled the tempo and structure of the game, but never really offered much in the way of convincing play. They registered 24 shots, but yielded just 1.66 expected goals. Cremonese keeper Emil Audero had just four saves to make, while Milan's only goal came from a cross from one full back to another.

Pulisic, for his part, still managed to play something of a role. He created four chances, put a shot on goal, and looked dangerous when he had the ball in the final-third. The result was not on him. But he did also look lost defensively at times. There were instances where he clearly wanted to press, but instead had to hold his position. Even from a losing spot, Milan were told to hold.

Pulisic looked defeated at full time, even angry. This is a long season in which mistakes will inevitably be made, but there are few justifications for losing to a team that hasn't played in Serie A since 2023.

Mallorca captain stripped of armband and suspended without pay after blasting coach over 'terrible message to the dressing room' after being left on the bench against Real Madrid

Mallorca captain Dani Rodriguez has been suspended and stripped of his armband after blasting coach Jagoba Arrasate’s decision to bench him.

Rodriguez blasts coach after Bernabeu snubMallorca strip captaincy and suspend payDressing room ‘message’ sparks club crackdownFollow GOAL on WhatsApp! 🟢📱WHAT HAPPENED?

Mallorca have taken a dramatic step by stripping veteran midfielder Rodriguez of the captaincy and suspending him without pay after his public criticism of coach Arrasate. The fallout stems from Mallorca’s 2-1 defeat to Real Madrid at the Santiago Bernabeu, where Rodriguez, 37, was left on the bench and not brought on as a substitute.

The midfielder vented his frustration on Instagram, questioning the coach’s decision to give minutes to new signing Jan Virgili, who had only just arrived at the club, ahead of long-serving players. Mallorca’s management, led by director of football Pablo Ortells, responded swiftly by announcing a suspension from employment and salary, as well as removing Rodriguez from his leadership role within the squad.

AdvertisementWHAT RODRIGUEZ SAID

Rodriguez’s frustration spilled out publicly across multiple Instagram posts, where he questioned the values behind Arrasate’s decision-making. In one of his first posts, he wrote: "It pains me that a player who just arrived, with just one training session, has the opportunity to play ahead of teammates who have spent years defending this jersey with sweat and dedication."

He continued by accusing the coach of undermining dressing room values: "Something like this sending a terrible message to the locker room: loyalty, hard work, or dedication don't matter."

Later, in a longer post that mixed personal disappointment with a message for his family, Rodriguez wrote: "I travelled with my children’s hopes of seeing their father play at the Bernabeu. An important lesson and piece of advice for them: Never expect anything from anyone, especially these days, when meritocracy, culture, and respect for hard work are so lacking. Don’t do things expecting something in return; do it for yourself and your passion."

He added: "People’s respect and affection are earned on the pitch. Sacrifice yourself for your dreams, even if they put obstacles in your way, and always believe in yourself. Things are earned, not given. And when you earn them, they taste twice as good. I love you, family. You’re the best." Despite the heartfelt tone, his remarks were seen by the club as crossing a line.

THE BIGGER PICTURE

Rodriguez’s suspension sends a wider message about discipline and authority within the dressing room. For Mallorca, who are battling to maintain stability in La Liga, allowing a senior player to openly challenge the coach risked undermining team unity. The club’s decision to act decisively reflects its intent to reinforce Arrasate’s authority and protect the integrity of the dressing room.

For Rodriguez, a long-serving figure and fan favourite, this episode marks a painful fracture in his relationship with the club. At 37, and in the twilight of his career, the disciplinary measures could cast doubt over his immediate future and whether reconciliation is possible.

As things stand, Rodriguez is unavailable for selection, starting with their upcoming trip to Espanyol after the international break. The club must now manage the fallout within the squad, ensuring that Arrasate retains the dressing room’s confidence while addressing the absence of a senior leader. Whether Rodriguez will be reintegrated after his suspension or if this incident signals the beginning of the end of his Mallorca career remains uncertain.
