10 things we learned from England’s European Qualifiers

As the dust settles on what must surely (on paper at least) be considered one of England’s best ever qualifying campaigns, commentators and pundits are now racing to answer some tricky questions; what did we learn from the games? Are England now in reasonable shape for the tournament? How far can they go? Can they even win it?!Unfortunately it’s a case of ‘almost certainly not’ as far as that last one is concerned, but there are a few issues thatÂrequire slightly more than a simple rebuttal. Here’s my humble take on what Roy & co. may have taken from the last 9 games…The team has not been properly tested yet – Aside from some self-inflicted pressure in Slovenia when the defence capitulated alarmingly easily twice and stood aside like a yawning whale for the home side to waltz through and score, actual pressure during games has been rare.In fact, the friendlies have given us much more tension and pressure, with a cauldron-like atmosphere in Glasgow last year testing the players mettle before going to Italy in the spring and facing a growing and confident Azurri. In this respect, the friendlies against Spain and France later this month, and Germany early next year, will tell us a lot more about how the players can handle big games. Especially the defence, which takes me neatly onto point two…..[ffc-gal cat=”premier-league” no=”5″]This defence does not inspire tremendous confidence – after the glory-years of Terry, Ferdinand, Neville and Cole, this England defence is still a real work in progress. Gary Cahill and Phil Jagielka did not look altogether convincing at the World Cup and it is hard to see how they can have improved given the one-sided nature of the qualifying games. Practice, and plenty of it, against the worlds best teams is vital ahead of the summer. But the strike force does – any team that can have Daniel Sturridge consistently out of the side and still not look too short of strikers is clearly a force to be reckoned with. With Rooney, Kane, Welbeck and Sturridge all strikers to be feared in the Premier League, and back up including Danny Ings, Jamie Vardy and possibly Charlie Austin, Hodgson can feel confident in how his side looks going forward. The wingers don’t look too shabby either – depending how the team lines up in France next year, the wingers could either be part of a midfield four or three up front. Whatever the formation, they deserve respect from the opposition. Townsend, Oxlade-Chamberlain, Walcott and Sterling all have the capability to frighten the life out of defences with their pace, and they can all finish if given the opportunity as well. But Roy must sort out the centre of midfield before it’s too late – Henderson, Lallana, Barkley, Carrick, Delph, Wilshere…… Who is England’s first choice centre midfield pairing?! None of the players mentioned above have let the side down, but then the opposition they’ve been playing against have made most games a stroll in the park.Depending on whether Roy feels like sitting in and countering or going on the offensive, he can set up a different side, which must be looked at as a positive. However, a little continuity might be nice.Barkley must play a key role – worthy of an article in itself, this debate might just decide how far England go next year. If Hodgson can conquer his natural conservatism and trust the talented playmaker from the start, he could reward them in spectacular style. His early-season performances for Everton show his startling ability and promise. Now is the time for him to realise that potential.Hodgson manages best when he lets exciting young talent loose – having previously mentioned that England must not rely on their defence for too much in the tournament, Hodgson must realise that the best form of defence is attack, and let his forwards take it to the opposition. We have to appreciate exciting qualifiers when they come around – due to the ranking system, games during qualifying do tend to be dull, cagey affairs against a side of limited ability. That’s why the games against Scotland before the 2018 World Cup will be so enjoyable – the passion of that rivalry remains undimmed by time. There are too many teams in these qualifiers – qualifying for a major tournament should never be a boring chore, but that’s exactly what this campaign turned into. FIFA and UEFA must look long and hard about whether the minnows who now sup at the same table as the worlds finest deserve their automatic place there.Despite that, it’s going to be a great tournament! After such a long build up (around 13 months by the time the playoffs are decided), it’ll be nice to see the groups, start to plot potential routes to the final and get down to the serious business of acquiring wall charts and England car flags like there’s no tomorrow.

The best transfer move Chelsea can make this January window

Chelsea’s move for Benfica’s Nemanja Matic this month makes the most sense. Though that’s strictly from a footballing point of view.

The club are heading back to Portugal to negotiate the purchase of a player, rumoured to be around £20 million, who only three years ago they exchanged in a deal which saw David Luiz go the other way to Stamford Bridge. This is exactly what UEFA had in mind with Financial Fair Play.

But it’s the best move Jose Mourinho can make to improve his squad. From the offset, it appears strengthening the at times lifeless attack is the priority. Samuel Eto’o now looks to be a pointless signing, while Demba Ba is largely forgotten. Add the inconsistent Fernando Torres to the mix and the easiest conclusion to arrive at is that Chelsea need a genuine world-class centre-forward, one who is currently in or at least approaching his prime.

Scoring goals, though, hasn’t been a problem for Mourinho’s side. It’s stopping them going in at the other which has limited them to a role among the chasing pack rather than a constant at the top of the Premier League table.

Chelsea simply don’t have a influential figure in the centre of midfield, and the term influential is purposely ambiguous.

The game is catching up to Frank Lampard. There’s good reason to believe that this should be his final season at the top of the game. As a figure in the dressing room and a mentor to younger players, he can be invaluable. But as a player trying to keep up with the swashbuckling style of the front three, he’s simply out of place.

Ironically, Rafa Benitez tried to use David Luiz in the midfield last season. The Brazilian’s kamikaze style would never see him at centre-back for a prolonged spell in a Mourinho team, and even in midfield, the Portuguese coach doesn’t fancy the former Benfica player.

Matic, however, who has blossomed into one of Europe’s best holding midfielders, is the answer, albeit an expensive one. It’s further evidence of Chelsea’s profligacy in the market that they could so easily dispose of the Serbian a few years ago, only to turn to him when in need of strengthening. Not only is he an excellent shield in front of the back line, he’s also capable of springing attacks, a player who can be hugely influential at both ends of the pitch.

It’s something that was present at Real Madrid, with so much importance owed to Xabi Alonso. Chelsea, for all the good that they have just in front of that central midfield pairing, don’t have a player who can command the centre of the pitch.

Mourinho should have no trouble extracting goals from this side. Even if you look past the fleeting threat of Torres; Eden Hazard, Oscar, Andre Schurrle, Willian, and, provided he stays, Juan Mata can be regular sources if goals. Perhaps the best for the forward line isn’t to invest in a new striker now, but to offer the best option, Torres, a consistent run in the team. At the very least he should be allowed to build up some fluidity, rather than being rotated in and out of the side.

Matic will give Chelsea a strong base to work with. The players are in place in other parts of the pitch, but it’s that central midfield area that needs to be addressed.

Capital One Cup conveyor belt is still in motion

This week heralded the return of the Capital One Cup and the third round certainly lived up to expectations. We have now grown accustomed to the annual midweek programme in September that brings us evening football under the lights, the anthemic melodies of Texas’ Inner Smile and and most importantly the future stars the competition brings to our attention.

Indeed, the League Cup has now become synonymous as a pathway through which young talents emerge, intermingle with first team regulars and look to catch the eye in the hopes of a more frequent role at first team level in the league and potential overtures in Europe. Almost like a one off audition perhaps.

It may be difficult to pin point exactly when it became fashionable for managers to utilise the League Cup as a springboard and anticipated opportunity for fans to get a sneak peak of the stars of tomorrow, but we have now grown used to scrolling through our match day programmes to find a few names draped more in mystery than instant recollection.

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has always made public his desire to blood younger talents in the competition and a pattern has started to emerge predominantly across the top two divisions with the many league regulars being replaced in the midweek by a cast of eager, hungry first timers hell bent on making an impression.

Over the years more and more Premier League sides and now Championship outfits alike are following the Wenger ideal by letting their precocious youngsters loose in the competition and who can blame them?

The Capital One Cup offers passionate fans a competitive environment and good old fashioned knockout football that can only be beneficial to the development of any young pro. Vociferous encouragement from the crowd and geeing up from a respected first team accomplice, is a far cry away from the ripple of applause that could be witnessed during a reserve or youth team fixture that would usually represent the surroundings for mere 20-somethings.

With this extra confidence and an understandable adrenaline rush having been given this experience it is no surprise that so many youngsters perform so well and become a first team fixture at their respective club given this initial opportunity.

With sides competing on a number of fronts including the Premier League, FA Cup and European tournaments, the Capital One Cup distinguishes itself on giving frequent first team opportunities to younger pros who wouldn’t gain as much playing time if the competition ceased to exist. Robbie Fowler, David Beckham and Steven Gerrard have all made their name in the League Cup and have gone on to achieve an impressive standing in the game.

This time last year Manchester United handed debuts to young Ezekiel Fryers and Larnell Cole in their fixture against Leeds at Elland Road, and way back in the 2003/4 campaign, a fledgling Cesc Fabregas then wearing squad number 57 scored his first ever goal for Arsenal in the League Cup in a home tie to Wolverhampton Wanderers at Highbury.

With some Premier League clubs entering the competition at the second round phase this year, there was plenty of evidence in the selected rosters that this occurrence of youth is just as prevalent as ever.

West Ham brought on Matthias Fanimo and George Moncur in their victory against Crewe Alexandra, Aston Villa replaced Australian first teamer Chris Herd with young Irishman Graham Burke during a tie against League One Tranmere Rovers and Southampton boss Nigel Adkins saw Stevenage as the perfect location to hand opportunities to development squad members Luke Shaw, Calum Chambers and Cobey Moore.

This invaluable experience in the Capital One Cup opening phases has now become a staple part of the footballing calendar and more and more clubs are using it as the perfect and assumed opportunity to blood youth.

It is unquestionable that the Capital One Cup conveyor belt is certainly still in motion. All that is left to mystery is just who will become the young star that takes the Capital One Cup by storm this year and really makes a name for themselves.

Paladini leaves QPR

Former QPR chairman Gianni Paladini has left the London club by mutual consent, ending eight years of involvement with the Loftus Road side.

The Italian executive was ousted from his position initially when Tony Fernandes concluded his takeover of the Hoops back in the summer, and has been working in an advisory role since.

However Paladini will look for a new challenge as his responsibilities at QPR have ended.

“Former QPR chairman Gianni Paladini has left the club by mutual consent,” CEO Philip Beard confirmed.

“On behalf of everyone at the club, I would like to thank Gianni for his contribution to Queens Park Rangers over the years.

“He has gone beyond the call of duty in his time here and in more recent times, played an integral role in our return to the Premier League, as well as assisting the football management team with the acquisition of some key players.

“He will always be welcome back here to support the team and we wish him every success for the future,” he stated.

Meanwhile injured QPR striker DJ Campbell is making good progress from a foot injury, and may well be back playing within a month.

The ex-Blackpool attacker picked up the ailment against Fulham in October, but physio Nigel Cox is hopeful that the forward could be back to action in the near future.

“DJ had a pin put into the toe on October 20th, and he is coming along very well,” Cox told the club’s official website.

“He is out of the boot after three weeks and now we will gradually increase his activity.

Everton fans react to £22m bid for Digne

Everton’s left back hunt is finally heating up, and loads of fans have been reacting to a reported £22m bid for Barcelona’s Lucas Digne.

According to The Mirror, Everton have offered just over £22million for Digne as the Toffees continue to search for a replacement for Leighton Baines.

Kieran Tierney was heavily linked a few weeks back, but Celtic’s price tag seems to have killed that deal, and attentions have now turned to Digne.

The 25 year-old is unsettled at Barcelona, having been unable to force his way into the team, eventually costing him his place in France’s World Cup squad.

[brid autoplay=”true” video=”255857″ player=”12034″ title=”Watch Everton’s opening fixtures for the 201819 Premier League season”]

However, the report does say the Catalan giants want to keep the former PSG ace as an understudy to Jordi Alba, perhaps why the Toffees have decided to go big with their first bid.

Marco Silva and Marcel Brands have a lot of work to do transforming the squad at Goodison, and injecting some pace and youth down that left flank is clearly the first order of business.

Adding Digne and Richarlison would do just that, but fans are split on the move after seeing the price tag, and you can find some of the best Twitter reactions down below…

Wigan complete Ali Al-Habsi transfer from Bolton

Wigan have confirmed that they have signed Oman goalkeeper Ali Al-Habsi from Bolton for a fee of £4million. The 29-year-old spent the entire 2010/11 campaign at the DW Stadium after first team opportunities became limited with Owen Coyle’s side, and excelled; the stopper received the Wigan Player of the Season award.

The move is of great delight to the former Al-Nasr player, who is looking forward to starting the 2011/12 season as a Latics player.

“I am very happy. I want to thank everyone at Bolton for helping me get established in this country but I need to be playing first-team football, and hopefully, if I can stay fit and keep doing my best, I will get the chance again at Wigan,” the Muscat born man is reported to have said on BBC News.

“I think the gaffer is building a really exciting young team here and I am thrilled that I can be part of that again,” he continued.

Meanwhile, manager Roberto Martinez is also glad to have Al-Habsi at the club on a permanent basis.

“After making it really clear that he wanted to play for Wigan Athletic moving forwards, we’ve done everything possible to make this happen. Goalkeeping is a very specific position and we are very pleased that we are going to be very strong in that department,” the Spaniard stated.

Wigan start their 2011/12 Premier League campaign at home to newly promoted Norwich City on August 13th.

Sunderland boss reignites interest in Frenchman

Sunderland boss Steve Bruce is once again making French midfielder Charles N’Zogbia his number one transfer target and is preparing an £8 million move for the player this month.

Sunderland have been a surprise package this season and want to bolster their European charge by bringing in the 26 year-old play maker from Premier League strugglers Wigan.

N’Zogbia, who is currently serving a suspension, has been in fine form again for Wigan and has weighed in with three goals and four assists this season, including a brace at St James’ Park. He came to England in 2004 when Newcastle signed him from French side Le Harve. He strayed with the Magpies for five years and made 118 appearances before moving to Wigan in 2009 for a fee of £6 million. While at Wigan he made his international debut for France in a friendly defeat against Norway.

Steve Bruce is keen to be reunited with his former player, and after missing out on N’Zogbia over the summer is desperate not to fall short again. The deal could be even more important should Sunderland fail to keep hold of Chelsea target Jordan Henderson.

Raphinha 2.0: Leeds could sign "the form player in the Premier League"

As they enter into the New Year, Leeds United will hope that their fine form in the Premier League continues.

Daniel Farke’s Whites now no longer look resigned to the drop, with two wins and two draws heading their way across a memorable December so far, pushing them six points clear of West Ham United, occupying the final relegation spot in the division.

Of course, there is still a lot of action that needs to take place before the season is over, with 21 huge clashes yet to be played.

However, everything is now pointing in the direction of the West Yorkshire titans being able to secure survival without breaking a sweat, with the January transfer window also helping them strengthen here and there to achieve this goal.

Leeds could seal statement deal in January

Reports have come out to suggest that Leeds will be somewhat stunted with what they can spend in the bumper window to come, owing to PSR regulations.

Considering their position in the table, that will not be music to the ears of supporters or indeed Farke.

Transfer Focus

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

However, as per an update from Sky Sports, there could be some wiggle room for Leeds to still operate, with the Premier League newcomers reportedly eyeing up some attacking reinforcements, particularly down the wing, as Harry Wilson’s name is touted again.

Leeds’ failed move for the Fulham star was well documented in the summer, and with the Welshman coming into his own at Craven Cottage this season, it does appear unlikely that Marco Silva’s side would entertain losing him anytime soon.

Yet, with his deal in London set to expire in the summer, Leeds could be prepared to make an audacious swoop once more for the Cottagers’ number eight, as they potentially win themselves their new Raphinha in the process.

How Wilson can be Raphinha 2.0

Leeds really did win themselves an almighty coup when they landed the services of the scintillating Brazilian for only £17m in 2020, with the much-loved winger at Elland Road going on to be a £55m purchase for Barcelona, after he garnered a reputation for being a game-changing presence on English shores.

Indeed, without Raphinha’s consistent brilliance during the 2021/22 season, Leeds would have surely fallen back down to the Championship with a whimper, with the sensational South American’s 11 goals making him a crucial individual who, very much singlehandedly, kept his team above the dreaded drop zone at times.

Wilson will hope he can be seen in the same glowing light if he makes the shock switch from Craven Cottage to Elland Road a reality.

Indeed, the Wrexham-born attacker has already been lauded as “world-class” this season by Sky Sports pundit Steve Sidwell, when delightfully placing an effort past Dean Henderson earlier in the month.

With five goals and three assists next to his name for the season, it’s clear that Wilson is managing to stand out in the Fulham XI in much the same way Raphinha did week, in week out when calling Leeds home.

Blessed with a left foot made of gold, just like Raphinha, Sky Sports’ Dougie Critchley has serenaded him as “the form player in the Premier League” right now, having picked up six of those goal contributions across a standout December.

With a bumper 71 goal contributions under his belt for the Cottagers, too, Leeds should have no divine right, whatsoever to poach the 67-time Wales international from Silva’s grasp next month.

But Leeds punched above their weight when picking up Raphinha all those years ago, and if Wilson is available for a cut-price fee given his contract situation, it’s a deal that must be explored, no matter how fanciful it feels.

If he were to join, survival would surely be even easier to reach, with Wilson’s “incredible” ability – as he was once labelled by his former Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp – matched with the goalscoring prowess of Dominic Calvert-Lewin, making Leeds an even more tantalising prospect to behold in attack.

Aston Villa join race to sign "top" free agent who held talks with Man Utd

Aston Villa have now joined the race to sign a free agent striker who has held talks with Manchester United, according to a recent report.

Aston Villa chasing first-team arrivals

It’s been a very low-key transfer window for the Villans so far, but with the Premier League season set to get underway in less than three weeks, the Midlands side are now stepping up their plans as they look to improve on last season’s standings.

According to The Athletic’s David Orstein, Villa have now placed a bid to sign Jaydee Canvot from Toulouse. The bid from the Premier League side has been rejected, but the Villans are continuing their pursuit of the centre-back, who is viewed as a top prospect. It is believed that Toulouse values Canvot in the region of £17 million, and they will be hoping the next offer is closer to that value.

Meanwhile, it was reported last week that Villa are in a race with Midlands rivals Wolverhampton Wanderers to sign striker Mika Biereth. The AS Monaco forward, who is highly rated by former Arsenal striker Ian Wright, scored 13 goals in 16 Ligue 1 games in the second half of last season, and that form has now put him on the radar of clubs around Europe.

Despite being under contract until 2030, Monaco are said to be opening to letting Biereth leave, but only if they receive a fee of around £40 million

Aston Villa join Calvert-Lewin race

According to The Sun, Aston Villa have now asked about Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s demands, as Unai Emery looks to bolster his attacking options.

Calvert-Lewin left Everton at the end of last season after nine years at Goodison Park, and while he continues to search for a new team, he has already spoken to interested parties. AC Milan and Newcastle United are two teams who are interested in signing the striker, but it is Manchester United who have held talks with Calvert-Lewin to gather information on his demands.

It’s been reported that the Englishman is looking to earn £100,000 a week at his new club, and while it is unclear if this would fit into Villa’s plans, they do need to bolster the attacking ranks after allowing Marcus Rashford to leave the club following his loan spell.

Calvert-Lewin is a player Villa are very familiar with, as the 28-year-old, who has been labelled a “top striker” by Jürgen Klopp in the past, has played against Villa 10 times in all competitions, during which he has scored twice at Villa Park, one coming last season in the Premier League and one in the EFL Cup during the 2023/24 campaign.

In talks: Man Utd want to sign striker in swap deal for £51m flop – report

Manchester United are believed to be in talks over signing a “world-class” superstar in an intriguing swap deal, according to a new update.

A big summer awaits at Man Utd

The Red Devils have had an extremely disappointing season, with both Erik ten Hag and Ruben Amorim struggling to get a tune out of the team.

This summer feels like a huge one for United, with Amorim able to bring in players to suit his style of play and get rid of individuals who he doesn’t see a future for moving forward.

Manchester United manager RubenAmorimlooks dejected at half time

One player who has been linked with an exciting summer move to Old Trafford is Lille striker Jonathan David, who is arguably one of the hottest attackers in Europe.

He has scored 14 goals in just 20 Ligue 1 starts this season, also scoring seven times in the Champions League, including away to Liverpool.

At the other end of the pitch, Jarrad Branthwaite is a rumoured target, with the Everton centre-back a young defender with a huge amount of potential.

Additions are needed in that area of the pitch with Lisandro Martinez a long-term injury absentee, while the likes of Harry Maguire and Victor Lindelof don’t represent long-term solutions.

Man Utd in talks with "world-class" ace over swap deal

According to a new report from CaughtOffside, Manchester United are in talks to sign Napoli striker Victor Osimhen in the summer transfer window.

The Red Devils are eyeing a possible swap deal involving Rasmus Hojlund, with the Serie A giants thought to be keen on bringing the €60m-rated (£51m) star to the club.

Galatasaray's VictorOsimhencelebrates scoring a goal that was later disallowed

This could be a sensational piece of business for United, considering Osimhen has been arguably among the best strikers in the world over the past three or four years.

The 26-year-old has been lauded as a “world-class” player by Jose Mourinho, while former Nigeria coach Jose Peseiro has also heaped praise on him, saying: “It is not easy to stop that guy. He created the first goal. He is fantastic for our team.”

With all due respect to Hojlund, Osimhen would simply be an upgrade on him, even though the Denmark striker is a young player who has shown his quality sporadically in a United shirt.

Negotiations ongoing: Man Utd in serious talks to sign "insane" 23-goal ace

He’d be an instant upgrade…

ByTom Cunningham

There are now lingering doubts over whether Hojlund will ever be at the level required to be a genuine success at Old Trafford, having only scored three goals in 24 Premier League appearances this season.

In Osimhen, United would be signing a player at the peak of his powers – one who has netted 25 times in just 40 caps for Nigeria, outlining his international pedigree.
