Major League Cricket gets official List A status from ICC ahead of second season

Major League Cricket (MLC), the season-old T20 tournament in the USA, has become the second Associate-run franchise competition to acquire List A status from the ICC, following on from the UAE’s ILT20 earlier this year. The status means that MLC will now be recognised as an official T20 league, with tournament playing records now counted as official format statistics. “We are really excited for the news as it’s a recognition of the standard and high quality of players taking part in the tournament,” tournament director Justin Geale told ESPNcricinfo. “By awarding MLC List A status for the upcoming season, it assists to acknowledge the strength and growing stature of the tournament and ultimately will help to enhance the credibility of the sport in the USA on a global scale.”The most important part for me though is it ensures the performances of some of the world’s best players alongside their peers are adequately reflected in their career statistics.”Really thankful to the ICC for taking the time to look at it as cricket in the USA doesn’t always fit into a template. We are an Associate nation and proud of that, one with a unique opportunity in front of us. It’s our hope that on the back of the upcoming World Cup and a successful season we can continue to build a platform for the sport to grow and ultimately succeed in the USA.”The 2024 edition of MLC will start on July 5, a week after the T20 World Cup ends on June 29 in Bridgetown. The T20 World Cup begins, however, in Dallas, USA on June 1, in what is an important season in the game’s continuing efforts to crack the US market. The , which reported on the awarding of List A status on Monday, also revealed MLC’s plans to expand from the current six teams to 10 over the next few years, jumping from 19 games in 2023 to 34 by 2025. Twenty-five games have already been scheduled for this season.”It was always intended to be a 10-team league,” MLC’s chief executive, Vijay Srinivasan, told the . “Studies show that we are a big enough country, with a big enough demographic to support 10 teams, so that’s our plan. We had 19 games in our first season, will have 25 in our second. I think we want to get to 34 next year, and just gradually keep expanding.”Srinivasan said they wanted the league, which clashes with the Hundred in 2024, to start in early June in 2025.”Ultimately for us, our ideal calendar is to start much earlier, in the late spring or early summer,” Srinivasan said. “With the Indian Premier League ending in late May, I think our sweet spot would be to start in early June, which is when we have the school holidays in the US, and go into July. That’s how we would like to establish our window.”An early June start avoids a clash with the Hundred’s July-August window, but it could mean an overlap with the T20 Blast. This scheduling clash became a major talking point in the last English summer when Jason Roy opted out of his ECB contract to play in the MLC and went on to represent LA Knight Riders, who have the same owners as that of Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), who won their third IPL title on Sunday.Last year, MLC ended two days before the start of the Hundred, though this time there will be an overlap of six days between the two leagues, with the MLC ending on July 28 and the Hundred starting on July 23. As a result, as many as half of the overseas players in the Hundred could arrive in the UK late after the MLC ends. Twelve out of the 24 overseas players under contract in the men’s Hundred have already been announced as signings or retentions in MLC and more could follow before the tournament starts.Four of the six teams in the MLC are owned by IPL team owners – Mumbai Indians, KKR, Chennai Super Kings and Delhi Capitals. The first season ran from July 13 to 31 with 15 group-stage games followed by four playoff matches, and ended with MI New York lifting the trophy under the captaincy of Nicholas Pooran. The second season will be played across the same two grounds which hosted the first season – the Grand Prairie Stadium in Texas and the Church Street Park Stadium in Morrisville.

Real Madrid and Alonso have been handed a huge setback by La Liga president Tebas, who has confirmed that the club's request to delay their opening league fixture against Osasuna on August 19 has been officially declined. Madrid were hoping for some leeway after reaching the semi-finals of the Club World Cup, but it seems their requests will not be heard this time.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

reported earlier this week that Tebas denied a deal to delay La Liga's 2025–26 start, despite Association of Spanish Footballers (AFE) and clubs claiming agreement. According to , Madrid and Atletico, along with captains Dani Carvajal and Koke, agreed with La Liga, Spanish football federation (RFEF), and AFE in May to postpone their 2025–26 openers if they reached the Club World Cup quarter-finals, citing player welfare. Madrid were alive in the competition until July 9, when they lost to Paris Saint-Germain in the semi-final, while Los Colchoneros were knocked out at the group stage.

  • WHAT JAVIER TEBAS SAID

“I believe that they will have 20 days to rest instead of 21 and no other leagues like the Premier League for Chelsea or the French Ligue 1 for PSG are changing the games,” Tebas said. "So I don’t believe that we should change the calendar for that reason, especially thinking that it’s a matter of one day.”

    WHAT NEXT FOR REAL MADRID?

It appears that Madrid's La Liga opener will proceed as planned, to be played on August 19 against Osasuna. Alonso has his work cut out after a humiliating 4-0 defeat against PSG in the Club World Cup semi-final. It has been reported that the manager is set to hold talks with forwards Vinicius Jr. and Kylian Mbappe ahead of next season, with other reports from Spain suggesting that the Real Madrid board will fully back Alonso's sporting decisions, should he find that some of the big names are not buying into his ideas.

Kohli on Babar: 'Probably the top batsman in the world across formats'

India batter says the two players have shared great respect for each other ever since first meeting at the 2019 ODI World Cup

Rahul Dravid: Would be ‘fantastic’ if India meet Pakistan three times in Asia Cup

Pakistan have long viewed Babar Azam as their biggest global sports star, and the admiration is shared across the border by Virat Kohli, who called Babar “probably the top batsman in the world”.In an interview with Star Sports last year, Kohli spoke of his relationship with the Pakistan captain, and revealed that they had always been on good terms, since first meeting on a rainy day in Manchester in 2019.”The first interaction I had with him [Babar] was during the 2019 [ODI] World Cup after the game in Manchester. I’ve known Imad [Wasim] since the Under-19 World Cup, and he said Babar wanted to have a chat. We sat down and spoke about the game. I saw a lot of regard and respect from him from day one, and that hasn’t changed,” Kohli said. “Regardless of the fact he’s probably the top batsman in the world across formats, and rightly so. Performs so consistently and I’ve always enjoyed watching him play.”Related

The rivalry between Kohli and Babar has always formed part of the cultural intrigue of India vs Pakistan contest s over the past five years, and partisan comparisons in both countries have added to the spice. When the two met at that World Cup game in Manchester, Kohli was ranked the top ODI batter in the world. On that day, he scored a 65-ball 77 as India eased to an 89-run victory.Over the years, as Babar has entered the prime of his career, he has risen to the top of the game, particularly in the ODI format. Earlier this year, he became the fastest player in ODI history to reach 5,000 ODI runs, beating out Hashim Amla and Viv Richards. He’s currently the top-ranked ODI player in the world by some distance with 886 points. Rassie van der Dussen is a distant second with 777. Kohli also makes the top ten, coming in ninth with 705 points.Babar is also ranked third in T20I cricket and fourth in Test cricket, as he is the only batter to make the top five in all three formats.India and Pakistan play each other in Kandy in a group stage game of the Asia Cup on September 2. They are also likely to play at least once more in the Super 4 stage, and are scheduled to play a World Cup match on October 14 in Ahmedabad.

Sky Sports: Man Utd and INEOS eye move to sign versatile £40m+ midfielder

Manchester United are eyeing a move to sign a versatile new midfielder in the summer, with Ruben Amorim looking to bolster his squad in the middle of the park, according to a new report.

Bruno Fernandes wins Man Utd Player of the Month

Bruno Fernandes was named Manchester United’s Player of the Month for the second month in a row earlier this week following an impressive few weeks that saw him score six goals and provide two assists across five appearances.

The Portuguese playmaker, who Fabrizio Romano has recently said will stay at Old Trafford this summer, started the month with a goal in United’s FA Cup defeat to Fulham, before then firing in a superb free-kick against Arsenal in the Premier League a week later.

He then scored just his second-ever United hat-trick as the Red Devils brushed aside Real Sociedad to reach the quarterfinals of the Europa League, and finished the month with a goal in a 3-0 win over struggling Leicester City.

Now with 16 goals and 15 assists in all competitions, Fernandes has been by far and away United’s best player this season in what has been an otherwise difficult campaign for Amorim’s side.

So good has the Portugal international been, in fact, that club co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe recently listed Fernandes as the only player United must without doubt keep hold of in the summer transfer window, while labeling others as “overpaid”.

“The captain is a fabulous footballer,” Ratcliffe told BBC Sport’s Dan Roan. “We definitely need Bruno. Without him it would be really tough.”

Man Utd eyeing £40m+ Felix Nmecha – Sky Sports

Though currently playing alongside Manuel Ugarte in the heart of United’s midfield, Fernandes could soon have a new partner alongside him in the middle at Old Trafford.

According Sky Sports reporter Florian Plettenberg, Man Utd and INEOS are “closely monitoring” the situation of Borussia Dortmund star Felix Nmecha.

Dortmund are expected to demand at least £42 million for the Germany international, whose contract runs until 2028, in the summer, but there are no concrete talks taking place just yet with either player or club.

Felix Nmecha for Borussia Dortmund.

Nmecha, 24, has played 27 times for Dortmund this season, scoring three goals and providing two assists from defensive midfield.

Back in November, former Dortmund boss Nuri Sahin, who was sacked by the club in January, heaped praise on Nmecha and his versatility, who has been capped three times by Germany.

“I think he has everything, he has an exceptional profile for a midfielder. He can play in the number six role, but can also play at number eight and ten.”

“Now he needs to take the next step. And then we’ll have a really good midfielder for the next few years. As a coach, you want players like that.”

Nwaneri upgrade: Arsenal will rue losing 'one of the world's best' for £0

Tuesday night came as a complete and utter surprise to the majority of Arsenal fans.

After a couple of rather dower weeks, there was a concern among some that their game against PSV Eindhoven would be just another underwhelming affair.

Instead, Mikel Arteta’s side put seven past the Dutch giants, with Hale End sensation Ethan Nwaneri once again grabbing a European game by the scruff of its neck.

The teenage dynamo has been one of the Gunners’ most exciting players this season and looks set for a massive future, but he’s still being outperformed by a former youth player the club couldn’t keep a hold of.

Nwaneri's remarkable rise at Arsenal

Most Arsenal fans first took notice of Nwaneri when Arteta made him the youngest player in Premier League history in September 2022, bringing him on in the dying embers of a win against Brentford at just 15 years and 181 days old.

Arsenal's Ethan Nwaneri

He’d make a few more appearances the following season, but this year has been the 17-year-old’s major breakthrough.

Despite still being so young, the often “unplayable” prospect, as dubbed by Jack Wilshere, has already made 27 first-team appearances this term, totalling 1019 minutes, in which he’s scored eight goals and provided one assist.

That means the Enfield-born gem is averaging a goal involvement every three games, or every 113.22 minutes, which is undeniably impressive.

Moreover, he’s not just scoring tap-ins, he’s already amassed quite the catalogue of strikes, from well-worked team moves to curlers from outside the area – the kid can do it all.

He’s showcased since Bukayo Saka’s injury why he’s so special, notably scoring in back-to-back away Champions League games, which included a brilliant goal against PSV this week.

With that said, as brilliant as he’s been, another former academy gem has been even more effective this season.

The European superstar doing better than Nwaneri

Given the size of Arsenal and their academy, it should come as no surprise that they have had many superstars fall through the cracks early on in their careers, with Harry Kane and Eberechi Eze just a couple of examples.

However, some people might not be aware that, before he moved to Chelsea’s academy, Michael Olise was a part of Hale End for a short period.

Michael Olise in action for Bayern Munich

Unfortunately, the club did not keep a hold of him, and after being released by the Blues in 2016, then spending time with Manchester City’s youth set-up, he secured a move to Reading in 2017, Crystal Palace in 2021 and then finally, a mega £50m move to Bayern Munich in the summer just gone.

While the Frenchman was already tremendously impressive in South London, racking up a tally of 16 goals and 25 assists in 90 appearances, he’s reached another level entirely this season having previously been described as “one of the best talents in the world” by Oliver Glasner.

In just 36 appearances for FC Hollywood, totalling 2354 minutes, the “unstoppable” game-changer, as dubbed by Statman Dave, has scored 13 goals and provided 12 assists and is showing no signs of slowing down.

That means the sensational winger, whom writer Muhammad Butt dubbed a “wizard”, is averaging a goal involvement every 1.44 games, or every 94.16 minutes.

Ultimately, in Nwaneri, Arsenal look to have a genuine world-beater in the making, but with how well Olise has played this season, we imagine the club wishes they could have kept hold of him in the past.

Man City star who Pep sold in 2022 is now outperforming De Bruyne & Savinho

Manchester City’s attackers this season have been slightly hit-and-miss. It has been a great campaign for some, including Erling Haaland, who has once again been in fine goalscoring form.

The Norwegian has scored 27 times across all competitions already this term. Phil Foden had a slow start, but he now has ten goals and five assists in all competitions.

One of the more disappointing players has been Jack Grealish. The England international has scored twice and grabbed five assists in 24 appearances this season, a slightly underwhelming tally given his brilliance. However, he has begun to find his best form again.

Two of the players who have had quite interesting campaigns so far are Kevin De Bruyne and Savinho.

De Bruyne and Savinho’s 2024/25 so far

It has been a tough season for City in 2024/25. They are struggling in the Premier League, now facing a battle for a place in the top four, and are on course to be knocked out of the Champions League. Real Madrid have a 3-2 lead going into the second leg at the Santiago Bernabeu.

For two of their attackers, De Bruyne and Savinho, it has been a mixed bag. The Brazilian joined the club for £30.8m over the summer and has shown plenty of promise.

The 20-year-old has two goals and eight assists across all competitions, which included a goal and assist in a 2-0 win against Leicester City.

De Bruyne has shown flashes of brilliance, and although he has struggled with injuries again, has still managed to put up some good goals and assist numbers. He has scored three times and grabbed six assists this term, with all but one coming in the Premier League.

It has been an odd season for the Belgian, who has spent plenty of time on the bench far more than you might expect for a player of his calibre. At the start of December, Gary Neville explained that he thought “something is definitely going on in the dressing room” for the Belgian to be on the sidelines so often.

It has certainly been a strange campaign for the Citizens, and in many ways, Savinho and De Bruyne sum that up.

Interestingly, there is a former City player, outperforming both of them this season. He might have had a big impact if he was still at the club.

The former City player who's now shining

Perhaps City could have done with the very “special” Ferran Torres this season, as football scout Antonio Mango described him. The Spaniard has impressed at Barcelona this term, as he has done since his move in 2022 for £46.3m plus £8.4m in add-ons.

Barcelona forward Ferran Torres.

Pep Guardiola confirmed the move had all but gone through in December 2021, and explained at the time, “I understand why he wants to leave”, with Barcelona hard to turn down.

The winger, who made the move to Manchester after impressing at Valencia, has played for the La Liga giants 138 times now. In that time, he has 35 goals and 16 assists. The 2024/25 campaign has certainly been productive.

The 24-year-old has scored ten goals and has three assists across all competitions this term. That is more than De Bruyne’s nine goals and assists, and Savinho’s ten goal involvements, suggesting he could have had an even greater impact on this City side.

Perhaps Ferran’s best contribution this season, and a game that best showcased the talent City let slip, was against former side Valencia.

Barca won 5-0 that day, with the Spaniard getting a hattrick, scoring a variety of goals including one strike where he made a darting run in behind the defence.

There is no doubting Ferran’s ability, something which Guardiola noted after a Premier League hattrick against Newcastle United. The legendary City boss described him as “brilliant” after that night. They were three of 16 goals and four assists, in 43 appearances, he scored in a City shirt.

Looking back on it, perhaps City fans wish their club never sold the young attacker. He was a versatile player who could play anywhere across the frontline and could have done lots of damage for Guardiola if he had still been there.

Where Are They Now

His numbers, which are better than De Bruyne and Savinho, speak for themselves. Perhaps he could have outperformed them this season, had he stayed at the Etihad.

Clement could axe Hagi by unleashing "explosive" young Rangers gem

How do Rangers salvage this season?

On Sunday, the Gers were ignominiously dumped out of the Scottish Cup by Queen’s Park at Ibrox, beaten in that competition by lower-league opposition for the first time since defeat at the hands of Berwick Rangers all the way back in 1967.

This leaves already under-fire manager Philippe Clement under enormous pressure ahead of Sunday’s Scottish Premiership clash with Hearts at Tynecastle; defeat could be his 85th and final game in charge.

So, could the Belgian save himself by bringing one of Rangers’ most exciting youngsters back into the team at the expense of Ianis Hagi?

Ianis Hagi's up-and-down Rangers career

When Hagi joined Rangers in January 2020, initially on loan from Genk, he made an instantaneous impact.

He marked his full debut with a goal against Hibernian before, a fortnight later, scoring twice as the Light Blues fought back from 2-0 down to beat Braga 3-2 in the Europa League, including a spectacular, deflected free-kick eight minutes from time, sparking wild celebrations.

However, his career in Govan has been massively disrupted since that moment.

First, the outbreak of Covid-19 saw the season curtailed soon after his introduction, while Hagi himself also suffered a ruptured ACL against Stirling Albion in January 2022, resulting in him spending 372 days on the sidelines, before falling out of favour under Michael Beale, thereby sent out on loan to Deportivo Alavés in La Liga last season.

Now back at Ibrox, the Romania international has started seven successive Premiership matches, as well as 12 of the last 13, scoring from long-range as his team demolished fierce rivals Celtic last month.

So, let’s assess Hagi’s season-by-season statistics.

As the table shows, largely due to injury issues, Hagi has not recently been able to establish himself as a regular fixture in the Rangers team, with this current campaign actually on course to be his most productive since the title-winning season of 2020/21, in terms of minutes, goals and assists.

However, Clement might have an even more productive winger currently sitting on his bench, who he surely must start at Tynecastle this weekend.

Chalkboard

Football FanCast's Chalkboard series presents a tactical discussion from around the global game.

Rangers' next attacking difference maker

Ross McCausland joined Rangers’ academy at the age of 16, arriving from serial NIFL Premiership champions Linfield for £60,000 in 2019, making his senior debut against Hibernian in a post-split fixture in 2023, handed a two-minute cameo.

Rangers forward Ross McCausland.

Then, last season, the Northern Irishman really made his breakthrough, racking up 39 appearances, scoring five goals and registering four assists, also making his senior international debut against Finland in Helsinki.

Still only 21-years-old, the winger was a key figure for Clement earlier this campaign too, starting both legs of the Champions League qualifier against Dynamo Kyiv, before scoring on matchday one of the Europa League, slotting home the second as his side were victorious in Malmö.

Jacek Kulig of Football Talent Scout described McCausland as an “explosive winger”, while Josh Bunting on Twitter believes he is a “superb talent”, with Ronnie Esplin of the Belfast Telegraph claiming Serie A sides Roma and Atalanta were both seeking to snap him up, before he signed a new contract at Ibrox.

Despite these rave reviews, McCausland’s role has significantly diminished in recent weeks, spending the last three Premiership matches, as well as the weekend’s shock cup exit, on the bench, but will Clement bring the Northern Irishman back into his time in Edinburgh on Sunday?

Clement can save himself from the sack by unleashing Rangers' very own Kuhn

Following one of Rangers’ most embarrassing defeats of all-time, Philippe Clement’s job is on the line, so he must unleash his best attacker.
