Bye-bye Gnonto: Leeds targeting "sensational" star who’s perfect for James

Leeds United have yet to make any new signings during the January transfer window to aid Daniel Farke’s attempts to secure promotion from the Championship at the second attempt.

However, outgoings have already taken place, with the likes of Charlie Crew and Joe Gelhardt both leaving in loan moves for regular game time, joining Doncaster Rovers and Hull City respectively.

Wilfred Gnonto is another player who could join the pair out the door at Elland Road before the end of the month, with the Italian constantly linked with a move to Saudi Arabia in recent weeks.

It would be a huge loss selling a player who’s registered nine goal contributions in 2024/25, but money talks, which could see the hierarchy be tempted to cash in should a big offer fall their way.

Such a departure would leave a huge hole in the Whites’ attack, potentially seeing the German pursue a move for a player who’s recently popped up on their radar.

Leeds target January move for Championship star

According to Football Insider, Leeds are plotting a move for Cardiff City winger Ollie Tanner before the transfer deadline in just a couple of weeks time.

However, the Whites are not alone in their pursuit of the 22-year-old, with Burnley, Leicester City, and Southampton all also in the race for the youngster’s signature.

The report claims that his current side are reluctant to lose the winger, with the aforementioned quartet all lining up offers to land the attacker this month.

Tanner has starred for a struggling Bluebirds outfit in recent months, scoring twice and registering two assists – in what has been a real break-out year for the former Bromley talent.

It’s unclear how much any deal would set Farke and the club back this window, but it would allow the star to form an exciting partnership on either flank with one player currently plying his trade in Yorkshire.

Why Tanner would star alongside James for Leeds

Winger Dan James cost the Whites a whopping £30m during their days in the Premier League, a figure that was seen to be slightly on the pricey side at the time.

He struggled to make an immediate impact at Elland Road, but has recaptured his excellent form over the last 18 months, subsequently playing a huge role in their promotion ambitions.

The Welsh international has registered 32 combined goals and assists across all competitions since the start of last season – often being the shining light in Farke’s side in recent months.

His frightening pace and direct nature are a nightmare for any Championship defender who tries to get in his way, with potential new addition Tanner also possessing a similar skill set.

When delving into the Cardiff winger’s stats from the ongoing campaign, it’s clear why the club are pursuing a move for the 22-year-old, having the tools to provide the difference in their title charge over the coming months.

Tanner, who’s previously been dubbed “sensational” by presenter Jason Mohammad, has managed to complete 1.6 dribbles per 90 at a completion rate of 52%, highlighting his direct nature with the ball at his feet.

The Cardiff star has also registered 3.5 touches in the opposition box per 90, producing 2.3 shots – having the attacking quality to produce the goods in the final third, offering an added threat to Farke’s side.

Such quality may cost the club a pretty penny this window, but it’s evident that he has the potential to allow the supporters to forget about Gnonto should he depart this month.

However, given the interest from elsewhere, the hierarchy will have to act quickly to avoid missing out on the talent, allowing him to star on the opposite wing to current star man James.

Explained: Why Leicester City's 15-year-old debutant Jeremy Monga had to wear blank shirt against Newcastle after becoming second youngest Premier League player in history

Leicester City's 15-year-old debutant Jeremy Monga had to wear blank shirt against Newcastle to abide by Premier League regulations.

Monga was introduced in the 74th minuteBecame the second-youngest player to play in the PLSurprisingly had no sponsor on his shirtFollow GOAL on WhatsApp! 🟢📱WHAT HAPPENED?

At just 15 years and 271 days old, Monga came off the bench during Leicester’s 3-0 loss to Newcastle United at the King Power Stadium on Monday night, becoming the second-youngest player ever to feature in a Premier League fixture. Only Arsenal's Ethan Nwaneri, who debuted at 15 years and 181 days in 2022, was younger when he made his first appearance. Yet what caught the eye immediately was not only Monga's age but the blank shirt he wore – free of a sponsor logo – due to a specific Premier League rule tied to gambling advertisements.

AdvertisementGetty Images SportTHE BIGGER PICTURE

Leicester's official kit sponsor, BC.GAME, is an online cryptocurrency-based gambling platform. Under the terms of a review of the Gambling Act 2005, which the Premier League abides by, no player under the age of 18 is allowed to wear a jersey displaying any gambling-related sponsor. As a result, Monga was handed a sponsorless shirt when he entered the field in the 74th minute against Newcastle, in full compliance with the regulations.

WHAT VAN NISTELROOY SAID

This season, Monga has been a regular presence in Leicester's youth setup, making appearances for both the Under-18 and Under-23 squads. He also featured three times in the Football League Trophy, further showcasing his potential against senior opposition. Additionally, he was part of the senior squad for the FA Cup clash against Manchester United in February, though he did not get any minutes on the pitch.

Despite the heavy defeat to Newcastle, Leicester boss Ruud van Nistelrooy had encouraging words about his young winger's performance as he told reporters: "You could see glimpses of his great qualities. He's a great winger and has speed. He's a fantastic talent, a great boy. He deserved these minutes and hopefully, more to come."

While Monga’s debut offered a rare bright spot, Leicester’s wider predicament remains bleak. Monday’s loss was their eighth consecutive league defeat – all without scoring a single goal. The result leaves them second from bottom in the Premier League table, 15 points adrift of safety with only seven matches left to play. Their next fixture sees them travel to Brighton on Saturday, where they will hope to end their scoring drought and breathe some life into a rapidly fading survival bid.

Ange must finally axe 4/10 Spurs dud who Carragher once dubbed "quality"

They might be the most entertaining team in the Premier League, but last night was one to forget for Tottenham Hotspur.

Ange Postecoglou welcomed Liverpool to N17 just a few days after their breathtaking League Cup victory over Manchester United, but instead of claiming their first back-to-back victories of the season, the North Londoners lost 6-3.

A few players looked somewhat decent for the Lilywhites, such as the young Archie Gray, who was again playing out of position, or Dejan Kulusevski, who tried to make things happen.

However, most of the team were incredibly poor, including one starter previously hailed by Sky Sports pundit Jamie Carragher, who must not play in the next game.

Spurs' poor performers

So, before we get to the player in question, it’s worth looking at some of Postecoglou’s other starters, such as Son Heung-min, who may well have played themselves out of the starting lineup.

The South Korean international’s legacy at Spurs is unquestionable, but this season, he’s become less and less effective on a seemingly week-by-week basis, and that was no different yesterday evening.

The club captain offered practically nothing in attack, producing a paltry combined expected goals plus assists figure of just 0.12, and was just as anonymous tracking back, which more than justified the 5/10 match rating he received from Spurs writer Alasdair Gold at full-time.

Someone else who was notably poor for the Lilywhites was Pedro Porro.

Like his captain, the right-back has been out of form for much of the campaign, and instead of taking a step in the right direction yesterday, he looked even worse.

The former Sporting CP ace was totally ineffective in attack, producing an expected assists figure of just 0.15, and was woeful in defence, losing 50% of his duels, being dribbled past once and losing the ball 21 times, which are just some of the reasons Gold gave him a 4/10 rating.

However, he wasn’t the only player to receive a rating that low, nor is he the only player who must be axed from the starting lineup.

The Spurs player who must be dropped

So, to get straight to the point, the Spurs player in question is, of course, Yves Bissouma.

The former Brighton & Hove Albion star, whom Jamie Carragher described as “quality” two years ago, put in yet another dreadful showing for North Londoners yesterday evening.

The Mali international looked lost at sea in the middle of the park, unable to influence the game going forward and looking even more ineffective when trying to carry out his defensive duties.

With statistics like these, it’s no surprise that Gold awarded him a dismal 4/10 match rating at full-time, writing that he ‘struggled’ for much of the encounter.

Sadly, yesterday’s poor showing wasn’t a one-off for the Issia-born ace, as he’s already let Ange down multiple times this season.

For example, he received a 3/10 match rating from Gold for his display against Chelsea, a 4/10 for his efforts against Rangers and a 5/10 against Qarabağ FK in the Europa League.

Ultimately, Bissouma is capable of playing well here and there, but this season, he’s been undeniably poor, and with Rodrigo Bentancur back from suspension for the next game, Postecoglou must drop him from the starting lineup.

Liverpool and Slot interested in "sensation" who "would be happy" to join

Liverpool have set their sights on signing a “sensation” of a defender, with manager Arne Slot said to be a huge admirer, according to a report.

Liverpool transfer news

With the January transfer window fast approaching, the Reds continue to be linked with new signings, including Juventus wonderkid Kenan Yildiz and FC Porto right-back Martim Fernandes, who could be brought in to replace Trent Alexander-Arnold.

However, Slot’s most pressing concern is likely to be keeping hold of the star players he already has on Merseyside, and there has recently been a positive update regarding the future of Alexander-Arnold, Virgil van Dijk and Mohamed Salah.

Sky Sports reporter Melissa Reddy has now dropped a major update, saying: “Talks remain ongoing between Liverpool and the representatives of Mo Salah, Virgil van Dijk and Trent Alexander-Arnold to give them new contracts.

“I’m told the dialogue has been very positive and has been moving forward, and been held in a very respectful manner on all sides.

“Liverpool want to do right by the players, but right by the club too. It’s been very apparent that Salah and Van Dijk want to stay.

Liverpool considering making £8m offer for player who’s "got everything"

He has a massive future ahead of him.

Although it appears as though Van Dijk could soon sign a new deal at Anfield, that hasn’t stopped Liverpool from looking at other centre-backs, and a report from TEAMtalk has now revealed they are interested in signing Bologna’s Sam Beukema.

Slot is seemingly a big fan of the 26-year-old, having been described as a long-term admirer, and the manager views him as a potential purchase for the summer of 2025, perhaps because Bologna have no desire to let him leave in January.

The Italian club will demand at least £20m to sanction his departure, amid growing interest from a number of Europe’s top clubs. However, the Reds could have the edge in negotiations, as the defender has already admitted he could see himself moving to the club, saying: “I was a fan of West Ham. I once visited Upton Park with my father and I was really impressed, because the atmosphere was similar to that of Feyenoord or Go Ahead Eagles.

“But there are so many fantastic teams in England, so if another great club like Liverpool came along I would be happy to go there one day.”

If Van Dijk does commit his future to the club, it may be difficult for Beukema to break up the Dutchman’s partnership with Ibrahima Konate, but there are signs he could be a quality signing.

The former AZ Alkmaar man was hailed as a “sensation” earlier this season, having cemented himself as a key player for Bologna in both the Serie A and the Champions League, while also captaining the side on two occasions.

The proposed £20m fee seems a little low for a player of the Dutchman’s quality, and the fact that Slot is a big fan is a very good sign that he could be a brilliant addition next summer.

According to a report from the higher-ups at Bayern Munich have already made a decision on the future of head coach Vincent Kompany at the club, with the Belgian's spot apparently not in jeopardy regardless of how they perform against rivals Bayer Leverkusen in the Champions League Round of 16.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Bayern Munich appointed Kompany as head coach after several top candidates, including Xabi Alonso, were unavailable. At the time, Kompany had just overseen Burnley's relegation to the Championship. Now, Bayern lead the Bundesliga by eight points, and Kompany prepares for a Champions League showdown with Alonso’s Bayer Leverkusen in the round of 16.

Ahead of the clashes on March 5 and 11, Bayern’s management has given Kompany a job guarantee, regardless of his Champions League performance. As long as he wins the Bundesliga title, his future is secure.

  • DID YOU KNOW?

Earlier this month, reported that the Bayern bosses were going to conduct an internal meeting to analyse the club's recent struggles, which has seen them struggle to produce convincing performances despite the fact that they are winning a lot and barely losing.

However, despite failing to beat Alonso in three previous meetings (two league draws and one cup loss), Bayern remain confident in Kompany's work. The club hierarchy appreciates Kompany's work up until this point, taking into account his inexperience at the highest level. Not just that, but the coach has strong backing from his players, too, who are fully behind him.

Bowlers in the spotlight as Galle Gladiators face Jaffna Kings in repeat of last season's final

Gladiators hold the psychological edge having beaten Kings three times this season, including in the first Qualifier

Madushka Balasuriya22-Dec-2021Big pictureSo, after 20 group-stage matches, an Eliminator and two Qualifiers, we’ve finally arrived at the culmination of this year’s Lanka Premier League. And it’s once again those two, Galle Gladiators and Jaffna Kings, vying for top spot, in a repeat of last year’s final.En route, Kings have pretty much trounced every team they’ve played, while Gladiators have been less polished, but are crucially the only team to have beaten Kings – three times all up, including in the first Qualifier.Suffice to say, there might be a slight psychological edge in Gladiators’ favour going into this final, but if you’re the Kings you got to be feeling that the law of averages is about to come down hard in your favour. So, if there are any clues as to how this match might go, a brief analysis of their three encounters might help. The first was game one itself, the tournament curtain raiser. On a fresh pitch, Gladiators utilised the best of the batting conditions to put up what was deemed at the time a par score of 164, before their spinners throttled the Kings batters.Kings would proceed to overcome this early setback by their batters going on a tear; over their next few games, they would maul Kandy Warriors for 181 in 14 overs and then Colombo Stars for 207 in 18 overs in rain-truncated affairs. At other times, they simply bundled teams out for below par totals and hared to the finish. Gladiators in the meantime never quite reached the dominance they had in that first match, losing a couple of games, while even the wins were close-run affairs. So, when the two sides met for a second time, in game 19, while both had qualified for the playoffs, there was only one team in the ascendency. And at the halfway stage of that game with Gladiators limping to 129 for 8, that statement still held true. However, Kings would quite preposterously stall in the chase; the batters that had laid waste in games past seemed to have lost all their bearings, as Kings fell short by 20 runs. That game though had a caveat; while the top six were still their primary options, there was still a fair bit of rotation, with Wanindu Hasaranga in particular a big miss. The pitch too was unpleasant for the batters. There were no such excuses for their last meeting, though, in the first Qualifier. With a place in the final on the line, and away from the spin-havens of Colombo, Gladiators’ top order at long last clicked into place. Kusal Mendis to be fair had been doing the business throughout the tournament, but this time he was joined by Danushka Gunathilaka as the opening pair laid the platform for an imposing 188.The bowlers, particularly the slingy Nuwan Thushara, then ran roughshod over the Kings batters, with only Rahmanullah Gurbaz showing any fight. And so, for the third time in as many matches against Gladiators, Kings’ batters failed to turn up.Yet, as we head into the final, it’s hard to look back at these games as anything other than blips; Kings have been by far the most impressive side this LPL, in the field, and with bat and ball. They will rightly head in as favourites, but against Gladiators, a side that has shown they have the weapons to hurt them, they have been found conspicuously wanting time and again. As they say, something’s gotta give.Form guide(Most recent results first)

Galle Gladiators: WWWLL
Avishka Fernando took Jaffa Kings into the final with a fine century•Ishara S.Kodikara/AFP/Getty ImagesIn the spotlightIt would be easy to pinpoint the likes of Avishka Fernando, who just plundered the first century of the LPL, or Kusal Mendis who lies second in the run-scoring charts. However, the shift to Hambantota for the playoffs and final, where the pitches have so far been truer, it’s safe to assume that both sides’ batters will continue to have the best of proceedings. This game, therefore, is likely to be decided by the respective bowling units. In Maheesh Theekshana and Jayden Seales, Kings have two bowlers who are among the top five wicket-takers in the tournament. Theekshana is tied at the top with 15, while Seales is one back on 14. Theekshana has been one of Kings’ trump cards, frequently providing breakthroughs in the powerplay, while Seales’ changes in pace have made him a difficult proposition for a lot of batters, especially on the sluggish Colombo pitches.Seales didn’t play in the first Qualifier but starred with 3 for 24 in the second. It’s hard to see him missing out on the final. Theekshana, meanwhile, will have a vital role to play in curbing the likes of Mendis and Gunathilaka at the top of the innings. As for Gladiators, their bowlers haven’t really lit up the tournament per se, though as a collective they have managed to get by. But in Nuwan Thushara they have a genuine, if inconsistent, match-winner. He’s picked up 11 wickets this tournament, but five came in their last game against the Kings. Yes, the comparisons to Lasith Malinga are inevitable, even if he’s got quite a way to before reaching that exalted level, but still, a bowler with low slingy action, a good slower ball, and able to surprise even set batters, is invaluable in this format. And then of course there’s Mohammad Amir, the jewel, the spearhead, who has been made to toil for much of the tournament on surfaces completely unhelpful to his skill set. Yet he’s picked up at least a wicket each game, while his economy rate of 7.29 has remained respectable. While the batters might have the better of it in Hambantota, it will also make Amir more of a threat.Team newsDon’t expect to see too much by way of change. Ashan Randika got himself a game last time, but it’s likely the Kings will opt to bring back Ashen Bandara, due to his excellence in the field as much as his useful lower order hitting. There’s also the fitness of Gurbaz that could be of concern, after he looked to have strained his hamstring in the last game. Upul Tharanga is in with a shout of replacing him.Jaffna Kings (probable): 1 Rahmanullah Gurbaz/Upul Tharanga, 2 Avishka Fernando, 3 Tom Kohler-Cadmore, 4 Ashen Bandara, 5 Shoaib Malik, 6 Thisara Perera, 7 Chaturanga de Silva, 8 Wanindu Hasaranga, 9 Jayden Seales, 10 Suranga Lakmal, 11 Maheesh TheekshanaThe Gladiators will likely feel remiss to change a winning combination, so barring injuries expect the same team to take the field as last time out. Noor Ahmad will miss out though, after he was selected to join up with Afghanistan for the Under-19 Asia Cup.Galle Gladiators (probable): 1 Kusal Mendis, 2 Danushka Gunathilaka, 3 Anwar Ali, 4 Mohammad Hafeez, 5 Bhanuka Rajapaksa(c), 6 Samit Patel, 7 Sahan Arachchige, 8 Isuru Udana, 9 Pulina Tharanga, 10 Nuwan Thushara, 11 Mohammad AmirPitch and conditionsWe’ve only had three games in Hambantota so far, and each has held very few demons for the batters. There has been bounce for bowlers willing to hit the deck, with the odd ball moving off the seam, but for the most part the ball has come on to the bat.Quotes”We won our last game, and everyone is in a good frame of mind. We are not putting a lot of pressure on ourselves. If we perform our roles, we can emerge victorious. Our shortcomings against Galle were that we failed to push the singles and twos, along with hitting the boundaries. We saw that happening in our last game (against Dambulla Giants) though. So what we discussed, we executed in the middle, and that’s why we won.”
“It’s like playing a series against a normal national side, we played three games and won three out of three. The boys are pretty much confident. As we have beaten them thrice it’s a matter of another game. We can’t underestimate them because we know how good they are, and they are the reigning champions. The preparations have been good, and we are looking forward to playing another match.”

80% duels lost, 6/10 rating: Liverpool dud was saved by Jones & Salah

Liverpool made it a mightily impressive seven wins from eight in the Premier League against Enzo Maresca’s Chelsea, but it was anything but straightforward for Arne Slot’s men at Anfield.

The Reds had to make do with a narrow 2-1 victory on the day, with the slim win seeing them move back up to the top of the pile for the time being, as the table toppers picked up the important three points by any means necessary after Manchester City’s earlier away win at Molineux.

Chelsea might well have edged possession and bettered the hosts when it came to shots on goal, but Liverpool would come away victorious at the end in gutsy fashion, as Curtis Jones and Mohamed Salah stood out for Slot’s men.

Jones & Salah's excellent performances

Not many Liverpool fans would be shocked that Salah put in another excellent showing to add to his distinguished Reds back catalogue on Sunday, but some might well have been taken aback by Jones’ stunning display centrally.

This was only his second start of the season after all in league action, but he will be demanding more starts from this point onwards, after scoring the crucial second strike for his side to send Anfield into raptures.

Evading all of his Chelsea markers to prod home the winner, after a sublime Salah ball into the area cut apart the Blues back four, Jones would rightfully bask in the glory of scoring the decisive strike, having been a standout performer all afternoon away from this golden moment.

Only misplacing four of his 41 passes during the 2-1 win, Jones was as stylish on the ball as he was gritty when Slot’s men needed him to be, with six duels also won to show off his defensive prowess away from solely being the match winner.

Salah was also unsurprisingly front and centre of most electric attacking moves Liverpool mustered up, with the tricky Egyptian opening the scoring from the penalty spot, in what was an arguably contentious call from the referee.

Liverpool would have been thankful for moments like that going in their favour at full-time, however, with the Reds also shaky in patches in the slim victory notably in defence courtesy of Ibrahima Konate.

Konate's performance vs Chelsea

It wasn’t an entirely convincing showing from the Liverpool number five, who was at fault for the only goal that went the way of Maresca’s side in the back-and-forth contest.

Konate would just about keep Nicolas Jackson onside – with his leg amazingly the difference between offside and onside – who fired home the equaliser for the visitors early into the second 45 minutes, only for that to be ripped up when Jones restored the one-goal advantage moments later.

It was an off-day from the towering Frenchman away from just this moment of action, as Konate lost 80% of his duels in an uncharacteristically weak showing, alongside only managing to register one tackle as Chelsea then grew in confidence that they could potentially nick something late on.

His poor performance was reflected in Daily Express journalist Alex Turk’s post-match ratings, with the ex-RB Leipzig defender receiving a low 6/10 rating, compared to Jones and Salah who both picked up a stellar 9/10.

With more and more fixtures now coming at a rapid pace for the Reds, as three more games in all competitions come before the close of the month, Slot could be prepared to shuffle his pack and drop Konate for his team’s latest test in the Champions League mid-week against his ex-employers.

It has worked in the Dutchman’s favour here, as Jones delivered the goods after being introduced into the XI away at Crystal Palace, and could well work out in Germany as Liverpool seek out their third win in Europe’s top competition.

Regardless of what lineup is picked, Slot will have full faith in his group moving forward, as Liverpool continue to perform like a well-oiled machine under the ex-Feyenoord boss.

Players with the most Ballon d’Or voting points since 2000

The voting process for the Ballon d’Or has changed a lot over the years.

Upon its inception in 1956, the recipient of world football’s most esteemed individual award was originally voted for by only 16 journalists, who simply took players’ performances over the previous calendar year into account.

Now, 100 journalists, each of whom represents one of FIFA’s 100 top-ranked footballing nations, vote for the winner. According to UEFA, they vote based on the following from the previous season:

Individual performances, decisive and impressive character Team performances and achievements Class and fair play Ballon d'Or past winners: The best XI of former champions

Probably the only time you’ll ever see Messi and Ronaldo in the same team.

Each journalist votes for 10 players in total, ranking them from highest to lowest, with players then receiving 15, 12, 10, 8, 7, 5, 4, 3, 2, and 1 point respectively. The winner of the Ballon d’Or is the player who receives the most points.

It can get a little complicated, especially if you want to work out which players in history have won the most Ballon d’Or points.

Fear not, however, because we’ve used the lists of each year’s Ballon d’Or placings to crunch the numbers. Here, we’ve listed the 15 players with the most Ballon d’Or voting points, some of whom may surprise you.

15 Wesley Sneijder 599 points

One of the finest Dutch midfielders of all time, Wesley Sneijder enjoyed a stellar career during which he enjoyed successful spells with Ajax, Real Madrid, Inter and Galatasaray.

He’s perhaps best remembered for his time at Inter, where he spent four seasons and won the Champions League in 2010 under the guidance of Jose Mourinho.

Sneijder’s highest Ballon d’Or finish came in that treble-winning year when he finished fourth behind Barcelona trio Xavi, Andres Iniesta, and Lionel Messi.

14 Mohamed Salah 616 points

Liverpool forward Mohamed Salah

Mohamed Salah has been one of world football’s most outstanding players since joining Liverpool from AS Roma in 2017. In 361 games for the Reds, he’s scored 218 goals, helping the club win the Champions League, the FA Cup, EFL Cup, and a first-ever Premier League title.

Salah’s highest finish in the Ballon d’Or award is 5th, which he achieved in both 2019 and 2022.

13 Antoine Griezmann 642 points

One of this generation’s most criminally underrated stars, Antoine Griezmann has spent his entire domestic career in Spain, scoring 272 goals in just over 15 seasons for Real Sociedad, Atletico Madrid and Barcelona.

For his country, he boasts an equally impressive record, with the Frenchman having notched 44 goals in 137 games for Les Bleus.

Griezmann has finished third in the Ballon d’Or on two separate occasions, first in 2016 and then in 2018.

France's top international goalscorers of all time

France have had some wonderful players over the years – here are the very best goalscorers for Les Bleus…

ByStephan Georgiou Mar 16, 2024 12 Virgil van Dijk 680 points

Only three defenders in history – Franz Beckenbauer, Matthias Sammer and Fabio Cannavaro – have ever won the Ballon d’Or, but Virgil van Dijk came close to becoming the fourth in 2019 when he finished a close second behind Messi.

That year, the Dutchman lost out to the Argentine by only seven points, which is the smallest winning margin since the turn of the century. All bar one of his Ballon d’Or points came in this year.

Since moving to Liverpool in 2018, Van Dijk has established himself as one of the world’s finest central defenders, helping the Reds win the Champions League and a clean sweep of domestic honours.

11 Manuel Neuer 870 points

Bayern Munich and Germany legend Manuel Neuer is widely regarded as the best “sweeper-keeper” of all time thanks to his daring yet successful style of play, which often sees him run out of his box to clear up opposition attacks.

Now 38, he’s won no less than 29 major honours during his career, including 11 Bundesliga titles, two Champions Leagues, and the World Cup. Neuer placed third in the Ballon d’Or in 2014, but becoming world champion was not enough to see him crowned champion.

10 Luka Modric 877 points

Ballon d'Or winner Luka Modric.

Luka Modric is the lowest-placed Ballon d’Or winner in the top 15.

The Croatian midfielder scooped the award in 2018 following a stellar year with Real Madrid and Croatia, which saw Los Blancos win the Champions League for the third consecutive season and Croatia finish runners-up at the World Cup.

Now 39, he’s still going strong for club and country.

9 Karim Benzema 882 points

Another past Ballon d’Or winner, Karim Benzema won the award in 2022 with a score of 549 points – 356 points ahead of second-placed Sadio Mane.

Benzema’s win came after he scored 44 goals for Real Madrid during the 2021/22 season, helping the club win La Liga, the Spanish Super Cup, and the Champions League.

He was due to be part of the France squad that finished as runners-up at the 2022 World Cup, though he did not play in the tournament due to injury.

The Top 11 El Clásico Goalscorers This Century

Who has scored the most often in El Clásico since 2000?

1 ByBarney Lane May 10, 2025 8 Kylian Mbappe 897 points

Aged just 25, Kylian Mbappe has already enjoyed an astonishing career.

In 467 games for club and country, he’s scored 344 goals and has won 19 major honours, including six Ligue 1 titles with Paris Saint-Germain and the 2018 World Cup with France.

Mbappe finished third in the Ballon d’Or last year, and having completed a high-profile move to Real Madrid in the summer, it feels like it’s only a matter of time before he adds the golden ball to his collection.

7 Robert Lewandowski 1,084 points

Despite his huge points total, Robert Lewandowski has never won the Ballon d’Or, having been, in the eyes of many, robbed of the prize on two occasions.

In 2020, after a stunning season in which he scored no less than 55 goals in all competitions for Champions League winners Bayern Munich, the award was cancelled due to the pandemic.

The Pole put up equally impressive numbers the following year, scoring 48 goals, but was controversially snubbed in favour of Messi, who had endured a hit-and-miss first season with PSG following his departure from Barcelona.

In spells with Santos, Barcelona, PSG and Al-Hilal, Neymar has 360 goals in 590 games, winning a host of honours, including the Champions League in 2015.

He’s also Brazil’s all-time top scorer, having notched 79 goals in 128 games for his country.
