Slot's 4/10 flop who had a "nightmare" must never start for Liverpool again

Liverpool’s dire run of form continued on Saturday afternoon. The Reds were defeated 3-0 by Nottingham Forest at Anfield, leaving Arne Slot’s side with just three wins in their last 11 games in all competitions, and just 18 points to their name in the Premier League.

It was a hugely underwhelming performance from the reigning Premier League champions. Their poor form sees them slip to 11th in the top flight, with just 18 points to their name. They are already eight points behind league leaders Arsenal.

In terms of the Saturday afternoon clash at Anfield, a first-half strike from defender Murillo, and second-half goals from Nicolo Savona and captain Morgan Gibbs-White were enough to give Sean Dyche’s side all three points.

The Reds dominate the ball, having 76% possession, and 21 shots at the Forest goal, but simply didn’t do anything of substance. They lacked real bite in attack, with just four of their shots actually finding the target. Forest, on the other hand, had seven shots on target out of 15.

There were some poor performances across the board from Slot’s side, although a few stand out in particular.

Liverpool’s worst players vs. Forest

It was yet another tough day at the office for Liverpool, with one man struggling to get into the game being Liverpool striker Alexander Isak. The Swede went another game without finding the back of the net, still chasing his first goal in the Premier League for Liverpool.

Liverpool content creator George Scaife expressed his surprise at the fact that Isak got just 15 touches of the ball against Forest. Indeed, there was a lack of service against Forest for the Reds’ number nine, who only managed one shot on goal.

Another man who left a lot to be desired for Liverpool on Saturday afternoon was Alexis Mac Allister. The 2022 World Cup winner was part of yet another reshuffled midfield, and although he almost put Liverpool ahead, he struggled to contribute anything of note.

Indeed, the disappointing performance from Mac Allister was noticed by Liverpool World journalist Will Rooney. He gave the Argentina international a 4/10 rating, criticising him for the fact that he ‘stupidly dived in’ on Neco Williams, which allowed the former Liverpool man to find a cross leading to Savona’s goal.

Isak and Mac Allister certainly struggled against Dyche’s men, but there was one player who was perhaps worse.

Liverpool’s worst player vs. Forest

It was yet another day to forget for Reds centre-back Ibrahima Konate. The Frenchman’s poor afternoon was summed up by James Pearce, The Athletic’s Liverpool reporter. He described it as a “nightmare” and said it was “error after error” at Anfield.

His once-formidable partnership with Virgil van Dijk has been breached plenty of times this season. Indeed, that was something that Forest found it easy to do on Saturday, given that they bagged three goals.

Some of the stats from the 26-year-old’s performance against Forest highlight how tough a day it was for him. Konate only won four out of seven attempted duels, conceded two fouls and was dribbled past once.

Indeed, Rooney gave the former RB Leipzig man a scathing review. The journalist rated his showing a 4/10, explaining that he “should have dealt with the ball better,” which led to a corner from which Forest opened the scoring, and “made a meal of the cross” from which Forest had their goal ruled out.

This season, Konate, who is out of contract in the summer, has put in several underwhelming showings. As recently as September, it was reported that Real Madrid will try and sign the Frenchman, either on a free if he doesn’t sign a new contract, or in January.

Slot and the higher-ups at Anfield now have a decision to make. With Konate’s performances and contractual situation, they may well decide to recruit in January and look to move on from the Frenchman.

They have been linked with Crystal Palace captain Marc Guehi again in the last few weeks, after failing to sign him on deadline day. Perhaps the Reds will be of the view that it is best they cut their losses on Konate and sell him to Los Blancos, or elsewhere, and reinvest that money.

Yankees Pitcher Had Special Moment With 29-Year-Old Rookie Catcher After First Start

New York Yankees rookie catcher J.C. Escarra, a 29-year-old former Uber driver, made his first MLB start behind the plate in Thursday night's 9-7 win over the Arizona Diamondbacks at Yankee Stadium. And Escarra, who took an inspiring journey to the big leagues, collected the first hit—a double—of his career in what amounted to a special moment in the bottom of the seventh inning.

But that wasn't the only special moment of the night.

After Yankees reliever Luke Weaver shut the door on the Diamondbacks with a save in the ninth inning, he and Escarra shared an embrace. Then, the Yankees backstop gave Weaver the game ball, placing the baseball in the righthander's glove. But Weaver, knowing what the day meant to Escarra, insisted that the catcher keep the baseball.

Here's the touching moment.

Even as he bounced between five seasons in the minors and three seasons total spent in Puerto Rico and Mexico, Escarra never gave up on his dream of playing in the majors. He worked as a substitute teacher and Uber driver while his wife Jocelyn worked multiple jobs as well to make ends meet. Then, after a strong spring for New York, Escarra made the Yankees' Opening Day roster heading into the '25 season.

And Thursday night was the culmination of years of dreams.

Escarra told he plans to give the baseball from his first big-league hit to his father.

"I’m dedicating that ball to my pops," Escarra said. "A longtime Yankee fan, lived in Yonkers for 15 years. Been through a lot, so he deserves that ball."

Now, thanks to Weaver, Escarra will have another memento of his own from his first MLB start.

PRIMEIRO TURNO

Anders Dreyer named MLS Newcomer of the Year after memorable debut season with San Diego FC

Anders Dreyer, San Diego's offseason acquisition from Anderlecht in Belgium, has been named MLS Newcomer of the Year. The Denmark international scored 19 goals and added 19 assists to lead the expansion franchise to a first-placed finish in the Western Conference. Dreyer received 74 percent of the vote. LAFC's Son Heung-Min finished second, with just over six percent.

    A historic year

Dreyer had one of the more memorable seasons in rookie history. The 27-year-old tallied 38 goal contributions. That mark is the third most in a single MLS season, and equal Sebastian Giovinco's first-year mark in 2015. Only Lionel Messi, who posted 48 goal involvements for Inter Miami, eclipsed his tally this year.

  • Expansion franchise records

Dreyer was part of an immensely successful year for San Diego FC, who were among the most dominant expansion sides in league history. The relatively unheralded side, who were picked by some to place last in the West, were dominant from the off. They set an expansion franchise record with 19 wins and tallied a best mark for a new side with 63 points. They won the Western Conference on goal difference.

    Running away with the voting

The voting wasn't particularly close, either. Dreyer dominated in pretty much every category. He received 72 percent of the media vote, 69 percent of players' vote, and 82 percent of the club technical staff voted for him to win the award. Son's impact on LAFC cannot be understated, but his arrival in August likely played a factor. However, Son was on pace for around 36 goal contributions in a full season based on his first nine games of action.

    Game 3 awaits

Dreyer might have already locked up the award, but there is plenty of soccer left for SDFC. After claiming the top seed in the West, they have had some difficulty against the Portland Timbers in the first round. They won the first game, but dropped the second, and will have to play a decisive game three this weekend. Dreyer has scored once and added an assist across those two games.

Premier League manager admits star is unsettled due to Man Utd approach

Manchester United got themselves back on track with a vital three points in the Premier League this weekend and supporters will be intrigued to see that one of their targets has been unsettled after an approach from the Old Trafford club.

Manchester United look to build on win over Chelsea

Ruben Amorim has faced plenty of critics this term as his side look to put some troubling times behind them at Old Trafford, and he will feel vindicated in his decision to remain firm on his system after seeing off Chelsea last weekend.

Despite Casemiro’s dismissal and a late Trevoh Chalobah reply from the visitors, Manchester United are now only three points off the Premier League top four and have an encouraging run of matches to come where they will hope to pick up valuable results.

While Amorim’s side have come under the microscope after a mixed start to the season, the former Sporting boss admitted his side made it harder for themselves than it needed to be against Chelsea, though lauded his players after finding a way to come through proceedings.

He stated via BBC Sport: “Every win especially in this moment is important, against a great opponent. We started the game in the right way. Really aggressive. The red card helped us dominate the game but we were already there. We scored two goals and then we tried to complicate our game again. It’s always complicated with us. It should have been different this game.”

Face-to-face consultations between Amorim and Sir Jim Ratcliffe paint their own story. However, it appears both parties are in this for the long haul, and the Red Devils will be aware of the danger that comes with regularly trading in managers before they have time to see through their project.

Above all, Manchester United remain an appealing environment for players due to their status as an elite football club, something reflected in recent comments surrounding one of their targets from an existing Premier League manager.

Fabian Hurzeler admits Carlos Baleba unsettled by Man Utd approach

Speaking to GOAL, Brighton & Hove Albion boss Fabian Hurzeler has admitted Carlos Baleba could be unsettled after Manchester United made a summer approach for the Cameroon international. In the end, the Red Devils couldn’t force a deal over the line, but the German boss has now issued a revealing response that indicates he has been influenced by the thought of a move to Old Trafford.

Better than Casemiro: Ten Hag sold "incredible" Man Utd star for just £9m

Manchester United must now regret offloading one talent given his rise away from Old Trafford.

ByEthan Lamb Sep 22, 2025

Casemiro, Kobbie Mainoo and Manuel Ugarte remain to anchor the midfield alongside much debate as to Bruno Fernandes’ role, and there will be a sense of unfinished business in the market for Manchester United that they will hope to rectify in January.

Ultimately, the Red Devils need to deal with the options they have at their disposal for now, though it doesn’t seem like a move is off the table for Baleba further down the line.

TSK bundle Seattle Orcas for 60 for third straight win

Texas Super Kings 153 for 6 (Mukkamalla 30, Harmeet 2-24, Jasdeep 2-34) beat Seattle Orcas 60 (Jones 17, Burger 3-10, Zia 3-16, Noor 3-18) by 93 runsTexas Super Kings romped to their third successive victory while Seattle Orcas suffered their second loss in a row in MLC 2025 as TSK bundled Orcas for just 60 on a pitch that had variable bounce in Oakland. Orcas were chasing a modest target of 154 but never looked like getting even close to it after they were reduced to 21 for 5 in five overs by the TSK quicks and were eventually bowled out in 13.5 overs for a 93-run thrashing.Orcas openers couldn’t replicate their strong opening stand from their opening game and fell within the space of seven balls. Kyle Mayers spooned an easy catch to cover point off Nandre Burger and David Warner was sent back by an excellent diving catch from Faf du Plessis towards cover off left-arm quick Zia-ul-Haq. Steven Taylor also miscued Burger but it was Zia who dented the chase with a massive double blow in the fifth over when he yorked captain Heinrich Klaasen for a duck and had the experienced Sikandar Raza feather behind a short delivery to leave Orcas five down.Left-arm wristspinner Noor Ahmad – Chennai Super Kings’ highest wicket-taker in the recent IPL – handed Orcas another double blow and was on a hat-trick after trapping left-hand batters Sujit Nayak and Harmeet Singh lbw. He missed the hat-trick by sending down a full toss to Jasdeep Singh but it hardly had an effect on the result as Aaron Jones, the top scorer with 17, soon handed a catch to Noor, who finished with 3 for 18. Burger wrapped up the game to end with 3 for 10 and Zia had picked up 3 for 16 from his three overs in the powerplay.TSK had earlier opted to bat and saw a slow opening stand of 22 between du Plessis and Devon Conway. Du Plessis’s struggles were ended when an Obed McCoy delivery roared off the pitch to take his glove and Conway was trapped lbw three balls later. USA top-order batter Saiteja Mukkamalla took the run rate over six an over with a few boundaries. Marcus Stoinis’ 28 off 12, studded with four sixes, took them past 100 and the run rate over seven an over. Orcas, however, pulled things back again with the wickets of Stoinis, Daryl Mitchell and Calvin Savage to make it 122 for 6 before Milind Kumar and Shubham Ranjane powered the side past 150 with an unbroken stand of 31 from 15 balls.

'It's about getting opportunities' – Celtic's Austin Trusty ready to show Mauricio Pochettino why he deserves USMNT minutes

U.S. international Auston Trusty says he’s in some of the best form of his career, even after missing out on several national team call-ups. Determined to prove he deserves a spot among the U.S. centerbacks, Trusty – appearing on GOAL's The Rondo – noted positive differences between USMNT manager Mauricio Pochettino and former boss Gregg Berhalter.

Getty'I will do anything possible'

Despite starring for Scottish powerhouse Celtic, Trusty has been called up just once by Pochettino – in November 2024 – and played only one match under the Argentine manager. However, Trusty praised Pochettino, and stressed he hopes he gets the opportunity to showcase his talent with the coach.

"I will do anything possible to be on that team and be a player of that magnitude and be the guy for the U.S.," Trusty told GOAL. "I know I can do it. I've shown it. And it's just about getting opportunities. When I get the opportunity, thrive in it. When I get the opportunity, it's game over."

Trusy said he had a plantar fascia injury recently, which has limited him so far this season, making just two appearances in August.

"It kind of ruined some momentum," he said, "but it's about getting back into the momentum and showing them I'm here as well."

Trusty pointed to his stats, particularly his passing last season, as he connected on 93.5 percent.

"I'm performing at an extremely high level," he said. "Look at all my stats, look at all of the people I'm defending in the Champions League and now, the Europa League. When you get the opportunity to get called up, it's about performing… Anyone competing for such a historic tournament, playing in the World Cup in the U.S., that's a prized possession of any American. So we're all coming with that mindset."

AdvertisementGetty Images SportComparing Berhalter to Pochettino

Trusty played more under former U.S. manager Berhalter, but the defender said he was disappointed that the current Fire manager left him off the squad for big tournaments – including the 2024 Copa America.

"Gregg called me up, but he didn't call me up during the times I wanted to be, like with the Copa America and the World Cup," he said. "Which was very, very upsetting. Me and him have had conversations, but I won't talk about that."

The 27-year-old said things are different with Pochettino, who's had managed the likes of Lionel Messi and Kylian Mbappe during his career.

"It's good, having a fresh face coming in. Having a guy of his caliber, he's coached Messi, Neymar and Mbappe, all of those guys, so he has the backing of every single player," he said. "To have a coach of that caliber, you can't say nothing to him. He knows. He's been there and done that and you have to respect that. That's the biggest thing.

"He has an aura, and we all look up to him. That's what you want from a national team coach."

'He's letting people have a shot'

Trusty said Pochettino has provided opportunities to players who didn't get those chances in the previous regime. Diego Luna, for example, has 13 of his 14 caps under Pochettino, scoring three goals in that span.

"Maurico, he's letting people have a shot," Trusty said. "He's letting people come in, and that's what you want. If you're a player on the outside and weren't one of the ones getting called in every single camp, no matter what, that's what you want. Mauricio is doing that."

Monchi identifies "incredible" Aston Villa target who'd fix Emery's attack

Aston Villa need to sharpen their attack after an uninspiring start to the campaign, and Monchi has now identified a target that the club feel can complete their forward line, per reports.

Aston Villa look ahead to Brentford cup clash

After a fourth Premier League match on the trot without hitting the back of the net, Unai Emery and company will be keen to move on to the subject of the Villans’ EFL Cup clash against Brentford following a goalless stalemate against Everton at the Hill Dickinson Stadium.

On the bright side, Aston Villa haven’t looked awful defensively, which is something the Spanish boss was keen to point out after the full-time whistle, citing Emiliano Martinez’s performance as a positive after the Argentina international didn’t move on during the summer window.

Emiliano Martinez with Aston Villa squad.

He stated on his performance: “We competed very well. Again, the goalkeeper coming back, playing a fantastic match.

“He saved us a lot of times. He made us confident we could play with our identity. Of course, we need defence and a lot of corners and a throw-in defence compact like we did. We need to get more confidence to play with the ball.”

Undoubtedly, the summer window wasn’t a pleasant one for Aston Villa, who saw attempts to bring in extra firepower thwarted for much of proceedings due to PSR concerns.

Emery can unleash his own Grealish in “outrageous" £35m Aston Villa star

Unai Emery could now unleash his very own Jack Grealish at Aston Villa when travelling to Everton.

ByKelan Sarson Sep 13, 2025

Looking ahead to January, the Villans are targeting a move for Switzerland international Ruben Vargas in a swoop that could see Monchi raid his old club to bring some much-needed creativity into the building.

However, the Aston Villa president of football operations may not be done there as he now has an attacker in his sights from one of Europe’s top five leagues.

Aston Villa make contact to sign Lee Kang-in

According to reports in Spain, Aston Villa’s Monchi has identified Paris Saint-Germain winger Lee Kang-in as a target that could complete Emery’s attack and his entourage are now weighing up the prospect of the South Korea international moving to the West Midlands.

Signifying that contact has been made ahead of January, the 24-year-old winger has featured four times under Luis Enrique this term, scoring in his club’s UEFA Super Cup triumph over Tottenham Hotspur in August.

Labelled “incredible” by Son Heung-min, the Incheon-born man has impressed in his limited game-time in Ligue 1, delivering four successful crosses and creating three chances, per Fotmob.

Viewed as an attractive prospect due to his versatility on either side and ability to drive past defenders, Monchi is confident he can rise to a new level in the West Midlands under Emery’s stewardship.

Aston Villa are in need of offensive reinforcements, and despite their troubles during the summer, they may now finally be about to land a solution to their woes.

Leeds now leading race to sign "excellent" star with same agent as Justin

Leeds United are keen to finish the window with some strong signings and are now deemed to be leading the race for a talented offensive star, according to reports.

Leeds United complete deal to sign James Justin

Taking their summer transfer spend to over £100 million, Leeds United have announced the signing of full-back James Justin from Leicester City for a fee in the region of £10 million.

Capped at international level by England, the 27-year-old shared his pride at putting pen to paper at Elland Road on a four-year contract as he looks to help Daniel Farke keep the Whites in the Premier League.

He stated: “Obviously to join a club of this size and to have the history it has had, and being back in the Premier League was a massive thing for me, so I’m over the moon to have joined.

“The stadium has obviously got one of the best atmospheres in world football. And it’s always a daunting task to come here as an opposing team, but I’m happy to have the fans behind me this time.”

Moving on, Leeds United are eyeing an ambitious loan move for Manchester United star Kobbie Mainoo amid the England international failing to get off the bench in the Red Devils’ first two matches of the new season.

Furthermore, a late return to Elland Road for Manor Solomon isn’t out of the question, albeit it remains to be seen whether Thomas Frank will let the winger leave North London within the final stretch of the window.

Plenty of work remains to be done for Leeds United on incomings, and supporters will be delighted to see that they are now leading the race for an exciting attacker.

Leeds leading race to sign Facundo Buonanotte

According to South American journalist Cesar Luis Merlo on X, Leeds United are leading the race to sign Brighton & Hove Albion star Facundo Buonanotte this summer following his loan spell at Leicester City.

West Ham United are also keen on his signature, and the two Premier League clubs appear to be the ‘most determined’ to land the Argentina international, who registered six goals and three assists in 35 appearances last campaign.

Demonstrating his quality in the top-flight, Buonanotte created 25 chances and completed 28 dribbles, per Fotmob, providing a bright spark in a Leicester City side that became obvious candidates for relegation due to their lack of depth.

He is a client of CAA Stellar, like new Whites signing Justin, possibly offering a little bit of encouragement that he may favour a move to Yorkshire over East London.

Leeds United will hope they are in a position to avoid a similar fate when it comes to relegation, and bringing in someone with the capacity to cover both the ten role and right flank will definitely add another exciting option that may well go on to succeed at Elland Road.
